If I didn’t post everyday, would you miss me? Would you notice? π
I have posted almost everyday (M-F) here for the last 13 years. Β Of course I’ve missed some days here and there, but in general, I’ve been rather consistently producing content here on Grechen’s Closet since I started.
I don’t do it because I have to, or feel like I should – I do it because I have something to say, something to share. Β I also want to be consistent – I want you to know you can come here everyday, maybe during your lunch at work, or when you get a spare moment, and see something new. Β To be honest also, I love it when I go to the blogs I read and there’s something new to see; I thrive on original content.
But today, I don’t really have anything compelling to share with you, so I don’t have a post. Β Okay, yes, this is technically “a post,” but you know what I mean. Β I don’t have an outfit photo (I am wearing my Eileen Fisher linen pants and James Perse linen blend tee. Β No shoes right now), a new article, or designer to share. Β I could throw something together half-assed, but that’s not me.
Which gets me thinking about inspiration, and how we work. Β For someone who works at home, for herself, I’m a terrible manager LOL – I do not have a schedule and never have. Β I have never created an editorial calendar, or planned posts weeks or months in advance. Β I write about what I feel like writing about at any given moment, and it’s usually very stream of consciousness…(Oh! I think I’ll do a Five Questions post about inspiration this week! Β π )
I think/hope you come here for that – for me – and not for sponsored, planned-out content or page-filler.
But I wonder, is there something to be said for consistency? For posting every day?
Do you read blogs every day? Do you look forward to new content regularly? Do you expect it?
I do miss you every day you don’t post! Including weekends! No pressure, though!
OT, back to a previous conversation: the Robert Clergerie velvet mules (omg I have a hard time remember how that’s spelled) in my usual size 8 arrived and they’re perfect! I won’t be wearing them for long walks, though, as I find the folded tops produce pressure points. Probably only a problem for me and others who blister exceptionally easily. I even have to switch my glasses around during the day. Such a princess, I know! π
haha!! i try to not work at all on the weekends, actually. it’s hard lately, but i try! gotta have a break sometime!
and i kept meaning to ask you about your sandals, i’m so glad you like them! i tried on some james perse slides that were canvas and that i loved so much, SO MUCH, but when i walked in them, i felt way too much pressure on the top of my foot so i didn’t keep them. i think it wouldn’t be a problem with leather shoes, but with canvas it was π
princess, maybe, but you know how you’re comfortable, and there’s not a thing wrong with that π
I WOULD MISS YOU GRECHEN! When you go on vacation and don’t post I’m of two minds. On one hand, I’m happy that you’re having a break. On the other?? I miss you desperately. Really and truly. You’re awesomeness is something I need in my life. Thank you!
I would miss you! But I understand, too. You always have such thoughtful posts, and it’s totally fine to take a break or just post when you have something to say. I think a lot of bloggers have moved to that format. You have to do what’s right for you!
I miss you when you don’t post but that’s because your posts are so good! If you went down to 3 days of “original content” and 1 day of just an outfit photo or slowre modeling, or honestly – whatever kind of schedule you NEED – your community would adapt! I admit I like knowing when bloggers I read are going to post – if they’re going to have a M-W-F schedule, and I know it, I’m happier than a scattered approach. But if I still like the blogger, I’ll read those too π Who knew I was this easy to please? π
I’ve been extremely impressed that you have still been posting so much, even with Slowre picking up steam. Personally, I would still be happy to have you check-in with all of us a few times a week (maybe on the days Slowre doesn’t get updated?). The fact you post more then once a week is wonderful, but I always assumed a benefit of blogging was not having to be tied down to the M-F routine.
As usual, I’m sure you will find a good healthy balance!
I would miss you!! I visit about 10 sites every morning before starting work and yours is definitely on there. You always have interesting content and like you said, are consistent. Sorry I don’t comment on your posts! I keep saying I should contribute to the blogs that I read regularly, but very seldom do. I hope you keep posting, but no pressure π
you know why i post everyday? because of you guys!! you’re my community, my friends, my people π
thank you for reading and interacting!!
haha. thanks tiffany! i’m not going anywhere.
and it’s okay that you don’t often comment, i am the same way with blogs i read – i know i would like to comment/interact more, but i get distracted easily LOL
I’m working part time outside the home and wrangling three kids two-and-under the other days, so I definitely can’t read every day. But I love your blog. We’re close in age and our wardrobing needs are similar. And while you do have access to some c/o items that make others (Elizabeth Suzann) within reach for you that are too expensive for me right now, I really feel like I’m getting reviews from a friend, rather than someone who is a glorified advertisement. Increasingly, my favorite blogs have felt less and less authentic and more and more like sponsored content without any soul.
If you need a day off, you should take it. I wrote for my blog extensively before kiddos and I’m trying to get back into it because I love writing. But I find that the “microblogging” that Facebook and Instagram represent sucks the wind out of my posting sails so often, or setting aside time at home or during my lunch hour to hash out a post feels rushed and stressful.
I often feel like the content in my comments on others’ blogs is better than my blog content. Does this happen to anyone else?
I enjoy this site tremendously. Thanks for sharing you.
I will take whatever you can give! Posting every weekday is a BIG commitment, and I applaud you for keeping it up for so long. That being said, if you cut back your schedule, or just opted not to post when you weren’t inspired, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings. I know you’ll always be back in my inbox on a regular basis. Being consistent doesn’t have to mean being inflexible. You are a consistent content producer; you produce content regularly. But you don’t have to be the USPS! In rain or shine, new pants or no new pants……..
I would miss you so much, Grechen! For sure! Your blog is the only one that I look forward to each day. But this doesn’t mean that I’d stop following if you posted less often. One observation though: with some things, the more you do it, the more inspired you get and if you slow down, sometimes the creative energy gets lost and it becomes harder and harder to get back on the horse each time. I’ve noticed that in my life. Just something to consider ?
Grechen– I would definitely miss you (but would definitely understand!). You are the only blogger I subscribe to and I love reading your post over lunch. I like your wisdom and your style (although very different than my own). You have great insight and your thoughts definitely mirror mine. I like how you evolve so I trust that whatever you do will make sense and I appreciate that. Take care, Beth
I’m catching up on the last week’s worth of posts after my family vacation to England! I love your style, I love your outlook, and I love seeing the similarities and differences of our lives. I would miss your daily posts but I certainly wouldn’t ask you to put forth more than you have to give.
Omg, I would TOTALLY miss you, Grechen! I look forward to reading your blog every. single. day. I love seeing your outfits every single day. There’s even that little void of anticipation on weekends because I know you understandably don’t post then. And I definitely noticed and missed you last Thursday (I think it was) when you didn’t post. I wouldn’t want you to take my love of your blog as pressure, though. The great thing about your writing is that it’s organic in nature and clearly comes right from what you’re thinking and wanting to say. It’s all of interest. Even the simplest outfit post with very little verbiage is of interest to me.
It’s so neat you mentioned ‘consistency’. Being able to count on something consistently being there is one of the great earmarks of security in life. The simple quotidian routines and experiences of life are what help make it cozy and worthwhile. And I know writing a blog as you do is not simple — it takes time and effort and focus and computer and camera smarts, not to mention style!! π and generosity of spirit.
So please keep posting as much as you can, because I for one really miss you when you don’t.
And thank you!
xoxo
Since I “discovered ” you a few years ago, you have become hands down my very favorite blog.
I feel like I connect with you on many levels and I look forward to reading your blog everyday.
You write from your heart and I appreciate your real talk and authenticity, and honest reviews.
That being said, you do what you need. I will miss you but I understand and will be here waiting for your return ( but not in a creepy weird stalkerish sort of way, because all that sort of sounded creepy from someone you never met in real life) π
I would miss you! Every day I sit own at my computer between 3:30 and 4:00, with a cup of coffee, and read your blog. I love your outfit posts and reviews but am always interested in whatever you have to say.
While you were away on vacation my blog service did not notify me of your posts. They all came at once on one day. I did sit down on about the third day and wonder why you weren’t posting. While I like a daily post it is not an expectation I have for any blogs I read. Content doesn’t create itself so I am fine with a post every other day, or even less, especially when the posts are chock full of interesting things. For example, your recent posts about dressing for yourself vs. others or society have given me a great deal to think about. I am on summer break right now during which I mainly dressed for myself. Monday I will go back to work and am seriously questioning if I will go back to dressing for others or will be able to stick with what most makes me happy. (That being said I do not dress in a trendy or uncomfortable way ever, but I do think about how others may perceive how I look in an outfit….might be time to stop that.)
Thanks for all of your posts…no matter how frequent.
I would totally miss you! I look forward to your daily posts and you are one of my favorite bloggers
I actually get a bit perturbed as my “computer time” is in the early am with a cup of coffee and your daily posts are usually not submitted yet. I tried being a day behind you so I have one waiting, but alas am not an expert at delaying gratification! #reallifestruggles!
First blog I check in the AM and yes I would miss you but you have to live your life… I would come back daily looking for you!
Short answer: YES!
Long answer: I look forward every weekday morning to your blog, Grechen. You are only one of 3 blogs that I read on a regular basis. You have been my style “icon” since I first found you several years ago. We have very similar tastes in fashion and you inspire me to style things in ways I never would’ve thought of! Plus, you’ve introduced me to so many AWESOME designers in the last few years too π I learn a lot from you too! (face shaving?! slow fashion…just to name a couple).
I would miss you too! I read every day but have fallen off the comment wagon this summer. I’m here consistently though!
If you’re feeling burnt out I totally understand. Love your originality and how it comes through in your posts.
I would miss you but it’s your blog and flexibility in posting should be a benefit of your own space. If you decide to post less frequently, I’d still be here reading when you did. I enjoy all your post topics. It’s like a mini check-in with a friend; just what my introverted self needs!:)
I love that you post every day! I would miss you. I’m new-ish here but I loooooove your blog, which is saying something because I only follow like 3 blogs.
I read certain blogs every day at a given time. Grechen’s Closet is my lunch-at-work read. It sounds a little psycho, but when a blogger I regularly follow unexplicably doesn’t post according to their regular routine, I actually worry about them! So yes, you are missed when you don’t post. But it’s totally understandable to want/need a day (or more) off, too.
I read your posts first from my email list and am always excited to see one from you! I would miss your regular posts but like most other commenters, I just enjoy hearing from you regardless of how often. Thanks again for all your style posts and musings which I enjoy and am inspired by. ?
Dear Grechen,
So much love right here- I would miss you! You are the only person/blog I read. You have given me so much inspiration! Thank you!!!
Love, gena
Lisa said it perfectly, if you don’t post on a weekday, I get worried that something happened! This definitely sounds creepy, but I’ve refreshed this blog dozens of times throughout the week because I am eager for a new post to show up. So if you check your Analytics data and see a stalker in Germany, that would be me. I do understand it’s hard to post when you’re feeling uninspired, perhaps you could have a backup list of writing prompts or topics for some of those instances?
I look forward to your daily posts! But at the same time I don’t want any blogger to feel the need to post daily but to post when inspired.
I agree, I love your Slowre modeling posts, and would love a “tour” of your closet. I think as long as I knew I could expect you on certain days it would be fine, but I would miss you!
I keep all my blogs in an RSS reader so I don’t actually have go to the websites everyday, they all show up in one place. But I find myself wishing there was new content more frequently. I love that you post most days. It gives me something awesome and inspiring to look at or think about. I sound like such a hypocrite though, since I haven’t updated my own blog since the beginning of May. OOPS.
Yes and no. I definitely don’t think you should be obligated to post when you don’t have anything you feel like sharing and I wouldn’t miss you for a day here or there. However, I will say that when you took that week-long break recently, I did miss you!
I would. It’s embarrassing how often I check your site! I trust your copy and your eye – case in point, what I got from Slowre is better than I could have hoped.
oh, i’m so pleased π
Oh boy…do I feel like an a-hole! Obviously, I don’t catch up on all of your blog posts everyday or I would’ve read this one on the 15th and commented right away: “YES!!! I would miss you!”
But with life so busy during the summer months (life in a tourist town), I just don’t stay caught up with anything, really. Don’t be offended. I love your blog more than any other!
Haha! It wasn’t a test π
