Ivana Helsinki Garance dress | $290 at Beklina
Reiss Silvia gecko print maxi skirt | $300 at Reiss
Long tee skirt | $88 at Madewell (this is similar to one I had a couple years ago, except it was pleated)
Zara long flowy skirt | $79 at Zara
Let’s just keep going with our discussion about “flattering,” shall we? I hear so many women say they can’t wear long skirts or dresses because they’re too short, or they’ll just look at it and automatically say, “that’s cute, but it wouldn’t look good on me.” I’m guilty of that too, but usually, even if I think it won’t look good on me, I’ll try anyway, then make a final decision. But I know there are so many ladies out there who don’t even try long skirts or dresses, and that makes me sad because long dresses & skirts are my FAVORITE THINGS EVER. You know this if you’ve been reading Grechen’s Closet for very long, but just in case you haven’t, I’ll mention it again: I LOVE maxi dresses & skirts.
I’m going to do an “Essentials” post on Thursday with all of my favorite maxi skirts and dresses, and the shapes/styles I think everyone should try, but in the mean time, here are some I’ve found whilst perusing online that I love. What are some of your favorite maxi skirts/dresses? Do you wear them? or are you one of those ladies I talked about who’s afraid to try??
(for reference, I’m 5’4″ and I wear them all the time, mostly with flats)
More of my favorite maxi dresses & skirts:

Yes, I wear them and wear them and wear them – even in the winter with a sweater belted over then and boots and scarf on!
I’m 5’4 and a half and honestly my summer wardrobe is centered around long maxi dresses and a blazer or a jean jacket or a leather jacket or a cardigan. Long skirts are mixed in as well – but for me it feels like “my” look. I feel like myself in them and they are easy and comfortable. I still love the T by Alexander Wang maxi either belted or not with something over it – by I have lots of Splendid and James Perse, Loveapella and BCBG.
That Reiss skirt is gorgeous and the All Saints one is super Rick Owens at a fraction of the price.
I am also big into the maxi skirt and dress. I am on the tall side so I have never worried about it, but I actually think a maxi can make someone look taller- your lower half is one long column in the right skirt. I do not think shorties should shy away from them at all! Also, there is seriously nothing more comfortable, in my opinion.
Ha! I just put the Madewell skirt in my “online shopping cart” to ponder for a while. But I’m truly in love with the James Perse box pleat! And that hot pink dress by Velvet is to die for!! The only thing I don’t like about it is “dry clean only”…GRRR….
One of my guilty pleasures is watching the Rachel Zoe Project on TV…there’s an episode where she is flabbergasted that store buyers don’t want to take the maxi skirts in her line, as they’re considered “risky.” She counters that they are the easiest thing to wear (she can sit down on the floor and play with her son wearing a maxi, etc), and I actually agree with her!
I love a maxi dress but don’t own any skirts. I tend to wear more dresses than skirt/tops in general – I have a large chest and tend to think that a waist band doesn’t help (er, isn’t “flattering” š Or I just have self image issues about my chest. I haven’t splurged on any higher end dresses (I wasn’t sure I would like the style, or that it would remain “in” style long enough) but now with the weight loss & wardrobe rebuilding, my goal is fewer pieces of higher quality. Your picks are SOOOO helpful as I explore brands I’ve never heard of before! (even/especially as I don’t consider my style to be “Fashion”y at all)
I’m 5’9″ and wear maxi skirts and a maxi dress occasionally and I think they look okay on me. My friend and cube-mate at work is 5’1″ and curvy. She really rocks the maxi look–dresses and low-contrast separates. I think her “trick,” if you can call it that, is to get (or have altered) pieces that just skim over her body–no wads of extra fabric flapping around.
I do think they definitely look better on shorter ladies when there’s not too much extra fabric…
Congratulations on your weight loss! I’m going to do a post on Thursday with some of my favorite dresses/skirts, maybe that will be helpful as well…
Totally!! They’re so easy, AND you don’t have to worry about exposing anything you shouldn’t like when wearing shorts…
It makes me sad that they’re risky!
Love that velvet dress, but in black for me š
Dry cleaning it would make it last longer, but I’m sure it could also be washed on gentle cycle. Though it might shrink if you do that…
I’ve always felt like I look a bit taller in a maxi.
And yeah, I’m basically obsessing over that all saints skirt. I tried on a similar one at target hoping it would be a good substitute, but it wasn’t. It was very very bad…
Love them for all season wear!!!

I would love it if the All Saints one could rid me of my desperate need for this $378 skirt… somehow I doubt it would work though.
yeah. tell me about it. i get something in my head that i want, i find the perfect version of it (the MOST EXPENSIVE of course) and nothing else is ever good enough. my habit has frequent rick owens sales, maybe it’ll pop up there, or on the outnet. or ebay š
