How I’d style Emerson Fry’s sarong ($128 for two):
1 J Crew market tote | $49
2 James Perse casual t-shirt | $50
3 Matiko bonny sandal | $84
4 The Conversation necklace by Academy | $86

Whenever Emerson Fry sends me an email, I open it immediately (sort of like James Perse). I’ve never purchased anything from them, but I always want to, and stalk the sales whenever they come around, however infrequently (as soon as that caftan goes on sale again, it’s mine…). I sort of feel like the prices are high for a lot of the pieces, but I’ve never tried anything on in person, or felt the material, so I have no idea if they’re “worth” it or not.
Anyway, I am always intrigued by sarongs, and love the IDEA of one for summer – either for wearing to the pool/beach, or as a skirt out and about. Emerson Fry’s sarongs (set of two for $128) are gorgeous – of course, I prefer the blue – and I love how they’ve style them as a “skirt”, but I wonder if I could ever do it. Would you? Do you?
I love sarongs as beach or pool wear, but can’t imagine wearing them as much else. Perfect for vacations- could definitely wear a sarong on a beach getaway, but don’t think this look works the same way as everyday kind of wear…unless you live at the beach! The Emerson Fry ones are definitely beautiful. If you’re curious to try the sarong thing, there are certainly many affordable options out there! I have a few, but they don’t see much use here in the desert/mountains. 🙂
Forgot to add…I love Emerson Fry too, but the styles don’t seem to work for me. I recently ordered a few pieces and returned everything. Quality is great, but fit wasn’t great for me. The linen tops are really nice–high quality. I actually might re-order in my size (I ordered small because medium were out of stock). The nick pants were surprisingly good on my muscular/curvy lower half, but the rise was too low. Items arrive beautifully packaged, with wooden hangers and garment bags as appropriate. Impressive. I will probably continue trying just because I love the styles. I miss the Emersonmade days…loved the vintage styles.
yes, i would definitely try a cheaper one first; there are zillions available…and i think a sarong would be wonderful for a beach vacation or resort trip…it can definitely multi-task. but then again, would you want to wear as a skirt something you wore as a swimsuit coverup at the beach?? that is what always confounds me. i guess if i was going to have drinks at the bar on the beach or by the pool or something, where it’s just as likely to get salty/wet i might be okay with it, but i can’t imagine then wearing it as a scarf, or out in the city or whatever. even though the item itself CAN multi-task, there’s a limit to what it SHOULD do i think!!
Sarongs are definitely more in the “coverup” category…I wouldn’t wear one over a wet bathing suit. I have worn one to the beach and later out to dinner, which definitely works. I usually hang them over something to air out…works pretty well. That being said, the last time I wore a sarong was on vacation in Bermuda a few years ago!
Loved the second look with a t-shirt and those fabulous sandals .. I’d only wear this if I lived in Hawaii though 🙂

MonicaP´s last blog post ..A long hot weekend
I’ve never worn a sarong, but they definitely conjure up an image of beachwear. I do like how it’s styled as a skirt though and I suppose that could work for regular everyday life if the fabric isn’t thin/see-through.
I love the styling of Emerson Fry but the prices are bit too high for my budget. I did buy a silk top once that I loved. Sadly I gave it to a consignment shop because it had pleating around the neckline that never looked quite right after getting it dry cleaned. I bought one of the linen tees recently because the shape is exactly what I was looking for in a t-shirt. I haven’t worn it yet, but that was definitely a seasonal splurge.
I like sarongs in theory, but in practice not so much. And I’ve never bought any Emerson Fry, although I love the aesthetic and like to check out the collections. I always like the coats the best, which definitely have a vintage vibe, but they are generally the most expensive pieces and I live in a warm climate, so I just can’t justify it to myself. It also definitely looks like clothing that works best for really skinny women, which I am not.
Since I nearly LIVE at the beach all summer (Ah, to be a lady of leisure. I’m not, really, at all!), I consider myself a beachwear expert. I’d really save the sarong for the beach. They’re great for covering up the parts you don’t want people to see if you run into town for a quick lunch or take a stroll on the beach, but I can’t see wearing one as a skirt, unless you’re a model. Then, hell, I’d just wear whatever i want, but you won’t NEED the sarong for the stroll on the beach!
I adore everything Emerson Fry has put out this year but have yet to purchase because their price point is higher than my usual limit. But I might spring for the slides, or a dress. I tend to use their emails/look book as inspiration and substitute my own similar items. It works!
How do their sizes run? Oversized, small or “true to size” (whatever that means in women’s garments!)
i love their coats, although i really don’t have need of one. and yes, i agree with you that their pieces look more suited to thin women, or at least women without a lot of curves/hips – which is also the way j crew is for me; i can’t wear any of their pants/skirts/dresses because they seem to be cut more for straight body types.
I’d say Emerson Fry runs true to size. The outerwear seems to run a smudge generous. I typically wear a US size 6/8/medium. The Emerson Fry styles don’t have a lot of shape to them, which is why I don’t think they are as ideal for curvy figures. I’m tall and slim, but have a muscular/curvy lower half. The Mick pants I liked a lot, but found them to be too low waisted for me. The linen tee shirts and tank tops are really lovely–I am considering re-ordering in my size, now that they have mediums back in stock. The smalls were a bit too fitted. Hope this helps!
Thanks, Lala! It’s very helpful.
