Man, I love this outfit. I love these overalls more and more every time I wear them. And this sweater? Can you believe I wasn’t going to keep it??
These are just a couple examples of pieces I had to “grow” into though. I absolutely loved each item when I first put them on, but wasn’t immediately sure I’d wear them enough to keep them. But over time, I’ve reached for these overalls more and more, and since we’ve continued to have cooler weather some days, I’ve worn the Rhodes sweater enough times lately it’s overdue for a wash.
As much as I shop and am always thinking about MY style, and what it might be, I still don’t always know for sure what’s going to be a workhorse in my wardrobe and what isn’t. I have a better idea than I did years ago, but I thought by now in my journey, I’d have it all “down” and would never make a shopping mistake again. Haha.
That’s been one of the hardest (and most exhilarating) things to accept about getting older I think; knowing I STILL don’t know everything lol. I’m so much more open now though, and having more fun because I don’t even give AF. Yes, I can be mildly jolted when someone asks if I’m my friend’s mom, but it doesn’t stick around very long, and then I double down, wearing what I want, and what I’m comfortable in, i.e. overalls and a cropped sweater.
What’s the last shopping mistake you made? What purchase turned out to be a “happy accident?”
🙂
Ha! This was my high school art teacher’s motto for us; brings back memories!
I have two pieces that come to mind, both from the brand Joie. One is a drop shoulder cream 3/4 sleeve sweater, and a flax linen boxy tee. I’ve almost given both away numerous times because I thought they were too “blah” or I wasn’t excited about them, but I ALWAYS get compliments on them when I wear them and I’ve had both since 2012 (I think they’re the longest lasting current items in my closet!) and now? I love them and they’re staples in my closet. Sometimes it just takes time.
So many shopping mistakes! Almost always related to buying what I basically already have. This happens because where I live the temperature ranges from minus 35 to plus 90…..so for a person like me who has trouble regulating their body temperature, this means a lot of clothes of differing warmth and coolness, which get stored and sometimes forgotten in various nooks and crannies all over my little house. Happy accidents? When I buy something online, don’t like it, don’t send it back on time (or can’t because it’s final sale), put it away for a year or two, and somehow at some point in the future it’s just perfect. I’m hoping this is going to happen to the even wider than I thought leather pants I bought on sale this year.
I turn on Bob Ross on Netflix when I need something soothing and relaxing as background noise. 🙂
My consistent shopping mistake is that I keep buying white tops. I really love the look of a while top with black bottoms, but for some reason I just can’t pull it off. I either don’t like my bra showing through (but I’m not willing to wear the one bra that won’t show because’ it’s not super comfortable), or I feel too “exposed” or “noticeable” in bright white. Maybe I need to balance the exposed feeling with like a black vest or jacket on top. So I keep buying all these white tops and never wearing them. I feel okay in light gray though…even a light gray that’s a shade or two off from white, and I don’t have these issues…but I feel like I’m not allowed to wear white or something. Who knows!
What about a cardi instead of a vest, Amy? Or, a long cardi vest in a shade other than black. (Sorry, but I think black bottoms/white shirt/black vest says “waiter”…and you don’t want that.) Or, maybe a cool Chan Luu scarf looped casually around your neck?
Mistakes? Oh Lordy!!! I’ve made more than a few! I’ve got returns upon returns to go back (hopefully in time). I just bought a pair of olive cargo pants from the Levi’s website in spite of swearing that I won’t buy pants online without trying them. Of course, they didn’t fit. And there are lots of duplicates because I forget what I own.
Happy accident? A few ebay purchases that turned out to be perfect. A Johnny Was black peasant top for my boho side, Eileen Fisher black pants, a Chan Luu scarf.
Happy mistake were the cropped carpenter pants from Citizens of Humanity- I bought them in my size without trying them on- last year. Then when I pulled them out, they didnt fit. I also waited too long to return them so I held on to them. Today I put them on, 14 lbs. lighter and voila, I have new pants again!
