We skipped spring here and went right into high summer. Well, technically we didn’t “skip” spring, it was just a blur of rain, floods and then more rain; we never really got to enjoy spending time outside. Now that it’s sunny, it’s ridiculously hot. And I can’t even care about covering my arms. I used to care, and would not be caught dead in a sleeveless top.
When temperatures are in the 90’s, heading to 100 and sunny, there’s no way to avoid being f’ing hot, pardon my language. So the best you can do is be comfortable, I think, and for me that’s wearing sandals and keeping as much off my shoulders/arms as possible. They must be really sensitive, though, because my shoulders are the first thing to get cold when I’m in a/c. Although lately, my body has been MUCH more tolerant of it, and I’ve even noticed that I don’t have to cover up all the time inside anymore. Hmmm…does that mean I’m heading into “the change”??
Anyway, I’ve often wanted to recommend this Splendid dress as an EXCELLENT straight, slightly slim, easy maxi dress, but it’s been in and out of stock on Shopbop since I got it a couple years ago. It’s exclusive there, so there’s no other place to find it, and nothing similar; believe me, I’ve looked. This dress is ribbed cotton, different from their 1×1 cotton (which is thicker) and really, just the ideal straight maxi dress in my opinion. It’s a bit longish on me, and I’ve toyed with having it hemmed, but I don’t think it needs it.
It does stretch out with wear, so you might want to size down. I have a medium, and I wouldn’t go smaller, but I did wash it in hot water a while ago and dried it to shrink it, which worked slightly. Now, I still dry it to keep it snug when I first put it on. It’s just a really really good basic, for a reasonable price. And of course, I’m tempted to get the navy version now, because, well, because. I still have those moments, yes I do!!! I absolutely don’t need it though, and probably wouldn’t wear it, although I do think navy is as versatile as black, and would WANT to wear it…
Happy Friday!! Enjoy your weekend 🙂

That is my kinda dress! The fact that is comes in my fav color – navy is icing! Spendid has always been a hit/miss with what shrinks or fades & what doesn’t. But I still dig the brand more than. I don’t.
I’m with you on the heat/Summer thing.
Where I live in SC – we have 4 seasons: Almost Summer, Summer, still Summer, and Christmas.
i’ve always been rather pleased with splendid, and i’ve had A TON, my french terry pants are about 10 years old and still going strong…
this dress is thinner, lighter weight, and ribbed, so it seems like it wouldn’t be very sturdy, but it is. i’ve had it a couple years and wear it a lot, and have to wash and dry it every time (which i hate…) since it stretches too much to wear it again without getting it back to shape. but anyway, in this heat….
Look at your hot bod!!!! It looks great on you. I had a slim-fitting maxi dress until I wore it out too much it started getting thin and see-through. Haven’t replaced it since, but this looks tempting since it looks so good on you. Hm…………
oh, try it!! i have really loved it since i found it…
and thank you 🙂
Fabulous silhouette on you ..
When it’s hot in Calif or I’m in the desert I’ll put on shorts and be damned that my legs don’t look all that great .. lol. No one is looking as everyone it too hot to care 😉

btw, how tight is it in the boobage region?
It’s not for me. But I’m a 34b. I think it could be if you’re much larger, but not like you’re going to bust out of it…
I’m not so much big boobed as much as I have wide shoulders and a wide ribcage. So tanks can be tight under my armpit/flanks just from my ribcage.
I love this dress and I love it on you. So flattering, and I love the color so much more than I would the same dress in black. A question: I am nursing right now and I know you don’t have kids, but I’m guessing it’s probably not stretchy enough to pull down in front for that purpose. I so want to buy this dress but I might have to suck it up since it probably won’t work for me right now. But let me know if you think it might! Also, do you wear a racerback bra with this? Thanks!
Oops , I didn’t mean to imply that the black version doesn’t look awesome on you, I just meant that for ME, I always think navy looks more flattering. But this black version is awesome on you!
it’s not stretchy enough for that, no! you could pull your arm out of the “sleeve” though; that would work, and it’s relatively easy to do…not ideal, but i think it would work so you could wear it immediately 😉
i do have to wear a racerback bra with this dress, definitely.
ha! didn’t take it that way! i think navy is very flattering, and probably would be for me too, but i get all beside myself when i have to work with anything but black or gray LOL
Woo hoo!!! “I can’t even” either! I second Elaine’s comment…you look sexy in this dress. I thought it was new! I have been looking at one on ebay, but because I have tummy issues, I’m thinking the one that’s blouson with a drawstring waist might be better for me. For some reason, I’ve lost my Gap navy racer back maxi. (A sign of not being completely done with my project)
I think your arms look great..all of that class work in Pure Barre? And maybe that’s why you’re not as sensitive to cooler temps. Muscle will keep you warmer, right?
ha. well…i don’t know if muscle keeps you warmer. i guess. i thought that was fat 😉 which i still have plenty of on my arms actually, but i just don’t pose where you can see my lower arms flapping in the wind…..
….0h yeah….(DUH!) Its muscle that burns more calories….Burn = Warm…in my head anyway!
haha! well…it’s not that far-fetched.
You look gorgeous — this look is perfection. And I am deeply, profoundly envious of your hair color. *opens new tab to find that dress*

thank you!!!
uh, and also thanks. i just spent the better part of an hour going down the rabbit hole of your blog. you are KILLING Me.
first, YOUR HAIR is gorgeous.
second, YOUR SKIN. OMG. and i’m making a list of all the things to try when i can spend money on skincare again…i’ve been dying to try sunday riley, but damn…the prices! and if your skin’s any indication, i should have been using creme de la mer the last twenty years. also need new sunscreen.
Awww, shucks. *blushes* You’re too kind.
I ordered Shopbop’s last black medium of this dress yesterday… Keeping fingers crossed that it fits. I am having a really, really hard time finding a simple tank dress. They’re either skintight or totally shapeless (which is fine in its own right, but I want a fit like you’ve got here — this is sexy, but not at all in a cheap or vulgar way) or embellished with rhinestones or something. I’ll be really, really stoked if this fits, because I like the brand and it’s well priced. I hope to pair it with taupe suede Birks, and maybe one of my Givenchy Pandoras — the modern lines of the bag should offset the granola effect from the Birks. Or, at least that’s how it’s going down in my mind. 😉

oh…fingers crossed!! it is hard to find a simple tank dress, which is why i love this one so much…it checks all the boxes for me!
and i love how your mind works 🙂 i think it’s a good bet that your pandora will offset the birks; i need to see a full-on outfit picture of that one.
Hi, i am just discovering this dress. Does it stretch out as you wear it through the day?
Thank you
yes. quite a bit!!
