(it was really windy during my photo session, which is why the top is billowing out a bit here!)

Here are some first looks at Everlane’s new silk square shirt on me. I ordered the white grey in size 6 and the black in size 4 to compare sizes. I like the larger size better, and anyway, the black is not black enough for me, so I wouldn’t keep it anyway; the black is more of a brushed black, or charcoal, than a true black in person.
My thoughts:
- I’m only wearing a skin-colored bra with the white-grey and for me, that’s fine, but if you like more coverage, you’ll need a cami underneath.
- I love the overall shape of the top, but am sort of bothered by the sleeves; I wish they were a little longer, and not quite so square.
- I like the more opaque band at the bottom, and at the top in the back
- I definitely prefer the fit of the size 6 on me, it’s the right length and just oversized enough
I ordered this top because honestly, it looked like a pretty good substitute for Steven Alan’s oversized stand collar shirt, which I’ve tried on several times, and wanted to get for spring. I do like that one slightly better, especially their black version, which is BLACK black, and may get it eventually, but Everlane’s is very good for less than half the price (Steven Alan’s is made in the US and also comes in cotton/cupro/etc).
Scroll down to see the black shirt on me. Did you get an Everlane silk square shirt? Which color? What do you think?

How did you get yours so fast?!? I ordered one right away and mine isn’t scheduled to get here until Friday! (BTW, I also have another shirt from them that seems to be taking FOREVER to get here!)
I ordered the pink one–a color!–in a size 12. If I ever receive it I’ll leave notes about the fit etc. I’m not sure what possessed me to buy it in pink…
I like the larger size on you–the silk drapes well so it’s oversized, but not overwhelmingly so. And I like the sleeve length on you!
i paid for 2-day shipping 😉 i couldn’t wait for their regular shipping, it takes way too long now!
i love the pink one, and almost got it to try, but wish it was more pale pink. i’m interested to see what you think of the color in person – the black looks black on the site, and definitely isn’t in person…so the pink may be different also.
i don’t mind the sleeve length, i guess i just wish it was a teeny bit longer.
can’t wait to hear what you think of it! (how was your job interview??)
Cute! I looked at it, but I know this is the type of thing that I’d love the concept of, but hate the reality of (on my body). But hey, I guess that means I’m making progress in determining what does/doesn’t work for me!
No interviews yet–but starting the process! Honestly, the headshot was the scariest part. 😉
Also–have you seen the new Emerson Fry collection?

I think I like both of them. The white looks best on its own, true, but the black one would probably look good as a top layer.
I like both of them on you! It’s funny how the different sizes/fit and colors make them look like two different shirts entirely. Given that you like drape, I think the white one is a great choice. Washable?!? That would probably be a deal-breaker for me.
Hey, Jen! The pink sounds pretty. I may check it out. I’m letting my hair go grey, so I’m finding cool colors work better on me now. Even lip colors!
i totally agree – but i just didn’t think it was worth keeping just for that. and i tried the white-grey one on with some dresses and slim skirts and love it as well, it’s still nicely fitted…
i think it’s supposed to be dry-clean, but i know people wash their silk in cold water with special detergent, or woolite, and it does fine. i will try that.
yay for going grey. i sort of can’t wait until i’m ready for that. not quite there yet, but i’m working up to it LOL
yes. LOVE. doing a post on it tomorrow…
what’s catching your eye??
I’ll answer for myself: The Solar tunic and The Star Caftan.
It’s not easy! I hate feeling “in-between” but I’ve done a lot of research on the options and there aren’t a lot. I’m going the “super blonde highlights route” and it seems to make the line of demarcation less noticeable.
ha! i love that star caftan. it looks a little slimmer than the one i have…
I’m soooo into this shirt …… and those shoes!! I’m going to poke around for a plus size version of that top. I know you like the white one, but I do really love the black one on you as well. The white one is super chic, but I feel like the black one makes you look all artsy and mysterious…….
Agree with Val! And wonder if that caftan is a little slimmer than the other ones—I ended up selling mine once I saw pictures of myself in it…
ha. yeah, it was gigantic. i’m holding on to mine for summer vacation and hopefully the beach, but this new one looks different…
OOh it looks so elegant on you. And the 6 is definitely a better length than the 4. I really like it!
Ooo! I love this! If only it was made out of washable silk like Elizabeth Suzann and Jamie + the Jones use. I have a hard time wanting to own something that I wear right next to my skin that is dry clean. But it looks very beautiful.
(I too remember when their shipping used to be super fast!)
Grechen – I just have to say that I think you look better in this shirt than the Everlane models do! I looked at the square silk shirt on their site last week and thought “Meh…” but seeing it on you is seriously making me reconsider. Thanks for doing another great review 🙂
wow, thank you kristin !!
The light gray looks perfect on you!
I ordered it in dark blue, size 8, and while I like the general idea of it, I’m getting lost in this one. Also, there’s something strange about how it drapes. It seems that the upper (single-layer) part of the fabric somehow sits on the somewhat stiffer opaque band.
I’ll try ordering a 4 and see how things go.
I wear a medium in the long-sleeve silk top but the 6 in the silk square shirt was just way too much fabric. Has anyone else had this problem? I’m definitely sizing down to re-order but not sure if I should get a 4 or go down to a 2. I also wear a medium in the poplin shirts, but a small in the tees (if this helps).
If you look at the size chart, there’s not a big difference in the measurements: a size 6 is 53 inches in the chest, a size 4 still 52. Given that you felt it was way too much fabric (I had the same problem), I would go down two sizes. The 2 is still 51” which might be enough for a voluminous silhouette.
Hi Gretchen! Love your blog–I am also a huge Everlane fangirl and your reviews are so helpful when I’m deciding what to purchase. I think grey shirt looks wonderful on you.
I love their silks and I ordered this shirt in pink. Excuse me, I mean PINK, in size 6. I do like the oversized fit and the drape but the color is a challenge for someone who wears a lot of neutral tones, like me. I’m trying to decide if I should exchange it for the black or keep it and wear it when I’m feeling bold.
Haha! I’m guessing it’s REALLY pink!! I probably wouldn’t be able to wear pink pink. Now a more subtle pink I would love …maybe.
I think you have to look at your track record with those things. I usually think i will try and wear things that aren’t normally “me” and most of the time don’t. I find myself always wishing for black…
You’re right–I’m already thinking about exchanging it for the black, which is so boring but oh-so-right. 😉
Hi Grechen,
You look awesome in the white/gray one! I wasn’t tempted to order that blouse until now…sometimes those boxy shirts look oddly proportioned on pear-shape bodies.
I am wondering if you would consider writing a post on sandal styles that have worked well for you. I constantly struggle with finding cute sandals that flatter (or at least don’t call attention to) my thick calves and ankles. You take such a considered approach to everything and would love to get your thoughts/recommendations.
thank you christina! i will do a post, or at least include some information in a larger post, but as a start, i can tell you my favorite sandals are thongs, or t-strap styles, and flat, not platform. which is not to say i don’t wear other styles, i love my double strap platform sandals…!!
i don’t know if you saw today’s post yet, but my new freda salvador shoes/sandals are amazing, and thought they were very flattering on my larger legs, even in skirts/dresses.
Those freda salvador shoes are gorgeous! Thanks for the reply !
Just received the pink shirt–it is more of a cotton candy pink than I had thought, I was hoping for more of a pale pink.
The fit is fine–I got a 12–but could see ordering a smaller size. Overall, the color just doesn’t do much for me. I think I would like it better in navy, but I don’t really need a navy shirt, and I have a boxy silk shirt that I like already, so I probably will return it.
This is a really late comment, but I was only introduced to Gretchen and her closet yesterday. I got the grey/white in my usual small/6 and I love it soooo much. It’s a lot of fabric for a short shirt, but it flows and drapes so beautifully I don’t feel like I’m drowning at all. I think I can still use it as a layer (over top of tanks, or under some forgiving jackets…..fingers crossed….) but I can totally understand sizing down for a more tailored look, especially under jackets. I do think it looks fantastic on you, Gretchen, in the picture. If I looked like that in it, it would be in almost daily rotation!
i can’t wait for it to warm up enough to wear it!!
so glad you love it 🙂
Hey Grechen! I was searching back for your thoughts on the Everlane silk shirt when I saw the suggestion for Steven Alan’s oversized stand collar shirt. They are on sale now and I thought I would try one. To make it equivalent to the Everlane sizing, would you go for a Medium?
