Here’s the other linen piece Everlane sent me to review: the collarless square shirt. I like it a lot.
It’s square. And billowy. And maybe a little big. But I tried sizing down to the 4 in the silk square shirt last year, which is basically the same shirt, and didn’t like it on me; it was shorter and the sleeves were shorter. I feel like the sleeves on this one are short enough, so I’m not going to bother.
It works better half-tucked, with slouchy jeans anyway, and I love how well it drapes in the back. I feel like it’s opaque enough to not worry very much about seeing your bra (FYI, I am wearing this bra, in the gray/blue color), and it’s nice and breezy.
Linen woven shirts are one of the things I think Everlane does really really well. I will never tire of wearing my white relaxed fit shirt from last year. Their previous years’ versions of linen tees have been better – I wasn’t terribly impressed with last year’s and haven’t tried this year’s. Anyway, while I really love linen tees, I’m quite soured on “cheap” ones I’m sorry to say. Even Amour Vert’s linen tee was a complete dud; it stretched out so much and became completely unwearable after just one wear/wash. I do have an Emerson Fry linen tee that I was lucky enough to catch coming through slowre and it is superb in terms of fit. Zady’s wasn’t that great over time either.
I will work on finding some more acceptable linen tees this summer though – and if anyone has any suggestions for ones that you’ve tried and loved, let me know!
Have you bought any of Everlane’s linen this year? Or in previous years? What do you think?
Stand up straight. Look and feel better.
The shirt looks great on you! Im sold on it.
For t-shirts I’m partial to cotton/linen blends because of the problems you mention with many (in my experience, all) linen tees. This JP cotton/linen raglan is my favorite. Though it’s way too expensive, I want to wear it every day: http://www.jamesperse.com/womens-cotton-linen-raglan-tee-wyh3500
Was that meant as a suggestion? Though perhaps you meant to be helpful, this comment made me wince.
Fwiw I think you look great, Grechen!
I know this is shocking but I haven’t tried any James Perse linen blend shirts in a while. I had one that i just didn’t love for various reasons, and gave it away.
But you’re right, some cotton goes a long way keeping them from stretching excessively.
As far as soft linen- I like my Everlane linen tees a lot. I wear them year-round, in the winter as a base layer/undershirt. They are going on a year now and seem to have aged well. I’m also a fan of the linen stuff at Echo + Air but only wear it for layering in winter because it’s too sheer for summer and you have to treat it very carefully to prevent stretching, but it doesn’t matter as much as it’s for layering. I also have some other linen blend base layers from Prairie Underground I love, which don’t have that issue.
I don’t have as much experience with the stiffer “handkerchief” linen. I got the linen tee from Grana but returned it because it was too sheer to wear on its own and too tight to layer. I got some linen pants from Grana that I like a lot though.
I’m always tempted by linen but haven’t had any luck with caring for it, especially knits. I have a couple linen tees (madewell) but am never really satisfied with how they wash or hold up. An Eileen Fisher linen cardi shrunk after I hand-washed it in the coldest water you could imagine washing something in. A crisper linen might be worth trying.
This shirt looks great. I’ll bet it looks nice left open over a tank top as well, or as a cover up with a sleeveless dress.
I think that top looks great on you! I love the look of the square tops, but I have very broad shoulders and a large chest, so they don’t work on me.
Holy crap you look so fabulous in this combination!
oh, thank you 🙂
they’re really hard to pull off on any body i think – i’m not always a fan of them on me, but i think i do prefer the linen version to the silk version because of the structure, weirdly enough!
awesome! please report back on your thoughts if you order it!
Ooo…I like that idea! I’d also like to see it with your EF black pants and your ES Clydes.
I really like this look on you! I find it hard to do boxy tops but you nailed it!!D
I have always loved J Crew’s button down linen shirts. This year they have Baird McNutt linen for their perfect shirts. I have 2 from this year already. They are not too thin, but they aren’t slouchy either, so I usually get my larger size. They look neat and not sloppy and wash well.
I love how this looks on you Grechen. I have the relaxed linen shirt in white being delivered today and it was difficult to choose between the one you’re wearing and the one I ordered. Maybe I’ll just have to do both:)
thank you dawn – i now have both and think it’s worth having both 🙂 they’re so different!!
I think this looks great on you!
I’ve had such bad luck with Everlane recently (I swear I’ve returned the last three or four orders I’ve placed) that I’m hesitant to try again.
I’ve been loving my linen EF t-shirt. I’ve only had it a couple of weeks but I’ll report back how it wears. (I’m wearing it today!)
is that the one you got at fisher found? i wish they had some of that at my local store…
was going to post about that today, but didn’t finish…did you see you can shop it online?
It is the one I got at Fisher Found. And yes, you can shop it online: https://www.fisherfound.com/
