Yes, you heard me. Get ready for the return of the poncho. Or the cape – whatever you call it, to me, there’s little difference. Believe me, I do love the idea of covering everything up with a big comfy sweater, but as a pear-shape, ponchos aren’t for me; I think they work best on ladies with skinny legs, otherwise the proportion is totally off.
I can’t say I don’t WANT a poncho/cape though. I’ve been coveting this one (although Alex is calling it a “batwing sweater” since I saw it at Barney’s Co-Op a couple of months ago (when will it go on sale???)
It would NOT look good on my body shape.
Neither would this one – although it might be better since it seems a bit more fitted at the waist – and it least it can be worn open:
Theoretically, something like this Leyendecker poncho could work on a pear or apple shape since it looks like it could be belted, which would at least offer a peek at some shape. And I love the print:
or maybe this version by Joie could work if it was tucked in at the front:
What do you think? Are you ready for the return of the poncho? Will you wear them?
Sigh, I too would love to cover up with a big blanket of sorts but I can’t pull off things that are so boxy around the middle!
agree – although if you can manage to tuck it in a bit at the front, something simple could work – like the joie one. my james perse boxy tee is that way – i could never wear it un-tucked because it look so frumpy and shapeless, but tucked creates a whole new look!
Dude, there is no such thing as “The Return” of the Poncho for me. I am always down to rock a poncho or poncho-like things. I found a really cool one at Room Service last February. And then there is this thing I got at Blue Velvet that I am excited to get to start wearing again. http://keepaustinstylish.blogspot.com/2010/03/rainy-days-and-mondays.html
that is an awesome poncho. i only say “return” because there was a huge poncho craze early in the decade that was sadly led by jessica simpson (ugh) and i bought into it…ended up with an expensive poncho that i never wore and looked stupid on me. seems like over time, their popularity waned, but now is coming back a bit. i have always loved the “ethnic” printed ponchos or traditional ones, but definitely can’t pull the look off…but you’re totally rocking yours 😉
Noooo to ponchos! Since the premiere of Ugly Betty, I always think of her Guadalajara poncho and it makes me squirm.
Oh lawd. No one should follow anything because of Jessica Simpson. But I just remembered I have another even more poncho-like poncho that I got at Forever 21 last winter. I remember throwing it on the day after New Year’s Eve. With my big sunglasses on, I sit down across from my friend Josh and he just looks at me and says “You look like Lady Gaga after a night of partying….you are wearing a blanket.” I took it as a major compliment.
I don’t know if the last one really counts as a poncho, does it?
Oh wow, I never thought it would happen! I wore them proudly in high school. At some point I must have had about five! But I still held onto the one I liked best, just in case. I’m not sure if I’ll be brave enough to wear it this fall though.
By the way, I started my own little fashion blog today (linked below). I thought you might like to see it, since I posted about how much you have influenced me, fashion-wise 🙂
well, technically, ponchos don’t even have “sleeves” they’re just squares with a hole in the top for your head…but i think as far as “fashion” is concerned a poncho is more about the shape than anything else. or lack of shape, if you will 😉
My friends always laught at me with my poncho. And now the poncho is back. I can not wait for winter and wear a poncho. I specially love the Leyendecker poncho
