Ah. The poncho. Or cape, as it’s called for fall. Much maligned, but I think every girl secretly wants to live in one. What’s not to love? It’s easy to throw on, covers everything up, is cozy, and can be pretty chic, if you don’t go ALL art teacher’d out and pair it with something much too wide on the bottom.
But, like the jumpsuit, it’s not as easy to wear as you’d think it would be.
First, don’t try to cook in it. One wrong move while you’re turning the burner up on the stove top and your sleeve is on fire. Also, if you don’t make sure to situate yourself in the car first before you snap your seat belt, your arm will be cemented to your side. And it’s not that easy to wear a poncho and carry a backpack. Or any other shoulder bag, really, because you essentially don’t have arms.
Aside from those issues though, ponchos are lovely! Haha. I was trying to decide if I had to choose would I rather wear a poncho or a jumpsuit, and I think I’d choose poncho (as if that would EVER be a choice!), because at least you can stay relatively “dressed” while using the bathroom with a poncho, if you know what I mean…
Anyway, I always think I’d love a nice cozy, warm cape for fall, but my wearing this poncho out, and around the house this week has helped to squash that notion. I love the idea, and I really like the look of this DKNY cape, and this tiger-print (in black and gray though!!) cape, but they’re just not practical at all. Unless you’re going to be sitting for a long period of time, as on an airplane, on a flight to an exotic vacation. Hmmm….

Happy Friday 🙂
I’ve always loved ponchos. Warmth isn’t so much an issue here in LA, so I’m probably going to choose one that has a more open weave or is a little sheer to avoid the “schooner under full sail” effect on my short frame. (Eileen Fisher has a couple in the lookbook I’m planning to try on.)
déjà pseu´s last blog post ..Le “No Brainer”
yes, i do like a more open knit on us shorties! (off to look at eileen fisher…)
I love it on you! And those bracelets….by whom?!?
I love a poncho, in theory. I actually bought what I thought was a really cute navy one from Minnie Rose last Fall but….didn’t wear it even once! Another, “DUH, Val!” moment. I’m going to try it out, tho, and see if I like it. I’m not sure what’s holding me back…standing out?
the bracelets: (i wear them all the time, i haven’t taken them off since my dad gave me the david yurman for my 40th birthday nearly two years ago…so i forget i’m wearing them sometimes!)
the cuff is lauren wolf and the chain is david yurman
you definitely stand out in a poncho, although some more than others. this splendid one isn’t as “extreme” as others – it sort of looks mostly like an oversized shirt! i think you should go for it. try it, and if you don’t like it, or don’t want to wear it, then get rid of it!!
I used to wear my roommate’s cape back in college (it was part of her school uniform if you can believe that) so I appreciated both the dramatic possibilities (“hey, check out the chick in the cape!”) and also the drawbacks, as in having no arms.
I’m glad I got it out of my system.
Also, anything drapey and poncho-esque is not for the large of bosom, generally speaking. Alas, because some of the modified cape-like or ruana-like coats are tempting on other people.
That said, it looks great on you!
