I got this dress last week when Gap was offering 30% off dresses and I’m completely in love. I tried on the medium and the small and ended up with the small because I think it fits me better, and it was shorter. Now that I’ve washed/dried it, it’s even shorter, so the length now is perfect on me (I’m about 5’4″). And horizontal stripes…”they” say that they’re not “flattering” on curvy girls, but I think they actually are – I really feel like they minimize my hips/butt instead of accentuate it.
An interesting observation about reviews on websites; if I were to look at the reviews of this dress on the Gap, I might be inclined to skip it. I usually put a lot of stock in online reviews, and will make a decision to buy or not buy based on them, but I completely disagree with some of the reviews of this dress. It is NOT see-through – I mean, if you’re wearing black underwear, you’ll be able to see it, but seriously, if you’re wearing a WHITE dress, do you wear black underwear? I don’t…I have lots of “nude” pairs just for these occasions. I wouldn’t wear a thong either. And I also wear a nude bra. The material on this dress is thicker than most other dresses I have (HENCE, NOT SEE-THROUGH), but it’s still nice for warmer weather.
Do you buy based on online reviews? how much stock do you put in them?
Oh, and I know I promised an “Essentials” post today on my favorite maxi dresses & skirts, but that will come tomorrow. I promise!!
I do most of the time. But I usually buy based on what I like. For example, there is a maxi printed dress also at Gap (gorgeous print in yellow and blue) and even thought the reviews were right about how it fits on top it seems that people have never heard of a tailor. So I went ahead and bought it on that same 30% discount.
That dress looks adorable on you. I clicked thru on the link and it suits you better than the model who’s wearing it at gap.com!
i know!! i pretty much figure that all skirts/pants are going to be too long on me, so i completely discount those reviews that say, “i’m short, and this dress is too long” LOL
thank you ally!
I love your hair!!!!
As for online reviews, I really only heed them if they’re telling me what I want to hear (i.e. buy it!), so I guess that means I don’t. Unless, of course, the item is non-returnable.
Gorgeous dress, I definitely need a striped maxi for my holidays – looks really comfy too! Love it x
haha! yes, i’m sort of that way too š
Don’t you just love stripes??? Man, they just step you apart. Love the dress š
You have inspired me do an outfit post on my new striped maxi dress as well! I got it from Old Navy, and it’s pretty much my new favorite dress. I was a little hesitant because of the horizontal stripes “rule” but I agree with you – they are actually quite flattering. And speaking of flattering, you look gorgeous! Love the hair and the outfit š
thanks cathy!! can’t wait to see your outfit post š
I read some of the reviews, and then I quickly realize that because we’re all different body types and shapes, it is truly meaningless unless the review is about a quality issue. And as for stripes, well…you know me and my stripes. We shall never be parted! I don’t care if they are flattering or not because they make me happy! (but I read something recently that totally validates your comment about them, Grechen: It was something like, “Small, close together stripes are flattering because they create an optical illlusion. It’s only when we wear wider stripes that it makes us appear wider.”)
Okay I totally squealed when I saw your photo– your updated hair color is gorgeous! You look so cheery and summery (sorry for the double “-ery” adjectives).
I think you style maxi skirts and dresses in such a polished way. I want to see you in an IFB maxi skirt round-up! xo
haha! thanks linda š
i’m actually preparing a “retrospective” for tomorrow’s “essentials” post of my favorite maxi skirts/dresses. it’s interesting, my hair/body/style through the ages LOL
