Oh my goodness…I could write a thesis on what I’ve learned about dressing while traveling this past week, but I won’t. Suffice it to say that while I made it through Sunday in San Francisco in the outfit on the left (we walked at least 8 miles, mostly up hill), I would never ever ever wear it for that kind of walking again. The shoes weren’t that bad, although they weren’t great, the main problem was the skirt, and that I did not wear spanx with it. I’ll leave it there and see if you can decipher what I suffered for hours that day.
My husband and I both decided that based on the way we travel (I guess it’s fashionably called “urban hiking” now), we need to focus more on practicality than on “nice” casual outfits. During our vacation to Rome last year, we walked about 5 miles a day, and I wore skirts & dresses most days (with spanx underneath) and was perfectly fine. San Francisco is different. While there aren’t cobblestones to balance on, there are A LOT of hills to wear you out, and I would have been happier in yoga pants, a lightweight jacket and running shoes. Anyway, live & learn…live & learn.
The Jerome Dreyfuss bag was PERFECT though, it held everything I needed, including my giant Karen Walker sunglasses and my small BAGGU bag. I hardly noticed it was there most of the time, and really enjoyed not having to worry about carrying anything or having something on my shoulder. I love the color too – really adds interest to my one or two-color outfits π
We had an AMAZING time in San Francisco, although it was a very short trip. We ate at some of the best restaurants I’ve ever eaten at (The Slanted Door, Millenium…) and enjoyed the great weather and scenery. It was so strange to wear a scarf and sweater in August, but I was freezing a lot of the time we were there, except on Sunday afternoon when the sun stayed out. I can’t wait to go back and spend more time there, it may even be a place we’d consider living for a while; we really loved it.
After San Francisco, I went to Atlanta to visit my family (which is why no posts for a week) and just enjoyed hanging out doing random stuff. And now I’m back in Austin and it is HOT! Atlanta was quite pleasant while I was there actually, and of course San Francisco was perfect, so now that I’m back in 100+ degree heat, I don’t want to do much that requires leaving the air conditioning! I missed you guys though, I hope you had as great a week last week as I did π
Tell me about your travel outfits – when you travel, do you walk everywhere? or Do you prefer more leisurely travel? What do you wear for either?
So glad you loved SF! It’s where I’m from originally, and lived for most of my life! It can get rather cold there, as you’ve discovered π Loved the outfits you wore, and I love, love, love your bag! When I travel with my family, we do try to walk alot, if the city is walkable like SF is. I prefer to look “cute” like you, when I’m out and about, but that has landed me in some not so comfy situations. That is how I discovered James Perse years ago. Voila! I could look great, and pulled together AND cute π
thanks shannon! i wish i’d been able to snag the JP yoga pants at shopbop before they sold out…maybe they’ll come back. those would have been perfect with a jacket and running shoes. cute ones, of course π the right shoes are so hard though! i ended up wearing my sneakers everywhere, because we walked so much – even to dinner – and in SF, i don’t think that was inappropriate, but still. i like to wear my ballet flats!
So glad you had fun here:).
lisa, i LOVED it there, and kept thinking about you while i was there π
can’t wait to come back and spend more time there to meet you and see all the other lovely ladies i know in SF
