Well, as usual, I have so many things swirling around in my brain to talk about: serums (ugh), Hawk’s first birthday(SATURDAY! OMG), cups for toddlers (now they’re saying that an open cup is the only “right” cup for a toddler), the Nordstrom anniversary sale (all the things I had picked out to buy for Hawk are already sold out), hair….
But I’m actually being very productive right now, cleaning out the closet in his room from my slowre supplies, cleaning out more packing stuff, etc., from my “office,” getting things together of Hawk’s to donate, you know that sort of thing. I’m in the zone, and want to get it all done, then shower before he wakes up. Fingers crossed!
Hope you’re having a great week!!
Happy almost one year of being a mama, Grechen! It’s a wild ride. And hooray for being in the zone. I feel like those times are few and far between as a mother, and I feel soooo good when I can get in the flow (and my bub is napping at the same time)!
Tell me more about serums as I don’t know what the heck I’m “supposed” to use, haha. I have a couple of recommendations with the cup situation though… my boy is just shy of 14 months so I’m just a wee bit ahead of you on the things I need to obsessively research for the kid. 😉
I ended up my boy an ezpz tiny cup and a green sprouts sprout ware straw cup. The first is a small open cup for practicing, it’s silicone and has a weighted bottom, soft on teeth. We’ll do a little water or smoothies in it at the table. He finds it very fun. The second is a good straw cup that doesn’t leak (!) and has been good for drinking water when we’re not in the kitchen and I can’t do constant clean ups. He loves it and will carry it with him everywhere. In non-pandemic times, it would be good on the go as well. We’ve had both for a couple of months and I’m really happy with them. Just thought I’d put it out there in case I can save you hours of looking at baby cups, like I did!
Hope you have a lovely day on Saturday celebrating Hawk. And also, you made it! I had no idea how emotional it would be for me as the mother, but it’s a big deal. <3
Happy birthday to Hawk! Hope
We’re using Tip and Toss sippy cups. Despite their name, they are washable. I won’t claim that they are very environmentally friendly since I doubt they’ll survive more than 1 kid but they appear to be universally accepted by 1 year olds. (We probably caused more environmental damage by buying cups kid couldn’t figure out.) My kid is now 2 and uses an open cup when he’s seated at the table, unless he’s knocked his cup over 2-3 times already. There is a tradeoff between non-optimal cup for kid vs. upset and tired mother for kid.
And thought I’d point you to a blog posting on dairy-free toddler foods at extrapetite. https://www.extrapetite.com/2020/08/healthy-toddler-meals-ideas-healthy-popsicles-dairy-free.html
thank you mary! i bought the tip and toss cups 🙂
he’s getting used to the harder straw, but so far so good. i think these will last a while if taken care of, and i agree with you, it’s a complete waste trying so many cups too…
he actually preferred to drink out of it open this morning, but i hold on to it also so he can’t toss it. i get that open cups are ideal, but how are we supposed to deal with HUGE messes every.meal.time trying to learn?? it’s shocking how well he does with an open cup considering he’s only 1, but we’ve a long way to go before he doesn’t spill at least half of it down his front LOL
thank you so much jodie 🙂 we had a great day saturday all things considered…i was okay saturday, but an emotional wreck the day before!
guess I got it all out…
We have had an ezpz cup since he was 6 months and he does really well drinking smoothies out of it. this morning was the first time he associated it with his smoothie and he got so excited. it was so funny!!
And i bought the green sprouts straw cup on your recommendation! today was the first day he used it, and i probably overwhelmed him by taking the handles off, and i think the straw is harder to get liquid out of than the munchkin one he had before so he’s not super-great with it yet, but it has promise. he knocked it off the kitchen table about five times today though, and no breakage, so that’s good LOL
we have some green sprouts toys too that he loves for the bath, and for playing outside – the boats, and the stacking cups – i love that they’re not plastic, but act like it.
Oh, I hope you like the bottle. It took a little bit for him to understand how the straw worked, but a fun drinking game with Dada helped. 😉 We still have the handles on though, I wonder how my boy would do without them. I also love Green Sprouts! I got a toothbrush from them too and he really likes it and does a decent job brushing his teeth (with a little additional brushing from us!).
I’m glad you had a nice day Saturday. Oh it’s very strange isn’t it? I was so sentimental and emotional around my kid’s birthday. I hadn’t quite expected it. But I realized in addition to my baby growing up, it’s also the day I gave birth and became a mother, and I thought back to everything that’s changed since then!
I… don’t know how to teach an open cup. To be honest, our daycare did it and we were happy to let them teach that skill. I suspect there was a lot of mess, but it didn’t matter as much because the daycare is set up to be easy to clean. Can he eat outside for a little? Also, our 2yo is better with a cup in the morning, when well rested, than at dinner when he’s tired.
