Just on a whim, I decided to look back through ALL of my outfit posts (they only go back to December 2006 on this blog, but I have been taking pictures of my outfits since 2004) and here is what I was wearing exactly four years ago today:
If you’ve been reading since then you’ll remember that I always cut my face off. And while obviously my style is still similar (hello!! long skirt!!), I think it has evolved a bit to be more sophisticated and a little less casual. And, I still have (and wear) a lot of the things I wore so many years ago. Except I do NOT have this Botkier bag anymore, which is the one bag I regret selling! I loved it so much; Botkier doesn’t make the large size anymore, and they definitely don’t have this color. I hadn’t used it in a while and thought it was heavy (ha! the Alexander Wang bags were so much heavier than Botkier!), so I sold it to a reader. I hope she still loves it 🙂
Here are some other beauties:
From March 2008 – this dress is now for around-the-house or dog-walking only, but I do wear it often. And I just wore that James Perse v-neck last week! I sold the bag before moving to Austin and I do still have the sandals, although I don’t wear them very much.
From March 2009 – the pictures start getting bigger and I started showing my face a couple of months before. But notice the maxi skirt…which I still have. And I was wearing A LOT of James Perse around that time.
This picture is from April 2009 and interesting to me because I’m getting my haircut tomorrow and I’ve decided to go short, very similar to my hair in this picture, but I will keep my bangs.
I wonder though, how much my style has REALLY evolved? I definitely use more accessories now, wear less denim and have branched out to include silk and other fabrics besides cotton/jersey, but I still have a mostly casual wardrobe. And I still rely mostly on gray, black & white…
If anything, I feel like I’m dressing a little more “my age” now.
How has your style evolved over the last several years? Has it? Should it?
My style has surely evolved over the years. I can recall a time when I lived in merino v-neck sweaters and wide-leg pants from Ann Taylor and black ankle boots. Now I hardly ever wear pants, I think I am more creative, and my work commute also changed my style.
I am tempted to copy this, totally giving you credit for the brilliant idea. One of the benefits of having a personal style blog for a long time is to have a photo journal of your personal style journey. Love this trip down memory lane, been reading you for years!
you can absolutely copy me!! i thought it was kind of fun looking through old pictures. i wish i had the ones dating all the way back to 2004 still though. those would be very entertaining 🙂
I remember a lot of these looks! And so I guess that means I’ve been reading for a long time.
I definitely think your style has evolved and refined itself but I also think you’ve always had a strong sense of style that has never been dictated by trends. I really think you were the only person I know who was wearing maxi lengths before they became ubiquitous. I really respect that and that you’ve stuck with blogging and been so successful for so long.
Ah, and this is one of the things that I LOVE about blogging and outfit posts – being able to reflect back on ensembles from years gone by! 😀 (Although to be honest, my style hasn’t evolved too much over the years. I’m a frock lover through and through!)
You got style on doubt about that 🙂
