Yesterday it stayed in the 50’s here and it was cloudy, so I broke out the big guns: my really old, really cozy cashmere cardigan by Inhabit. I don’t wear this out in public much anymore since it’s quite worn looking and big on me, but I did yesterday (to Target to pick up halloween candy…); it’s basically my super-luxurious robe at home when it’s cold. Same with the shoes. They’re pretty worn at the bottoms, holes in the rubber, that sort of thing, so they’re my around the house shoes and going to Pure Barre shoes now.
The shoes and sweater have been workhorses in my closet – I love it when I can literally wear things to pieces. I hate that I can’t pass the shoes on, because they really have no life left in them, but the cardigan will last for another decade or so, no problem.
Still, it’s hard for me to tell what’s going to really stand the test of time in my closet. Even after all the over-analysis LOL. So, I overshoot and sometimes end up with winners 🙂
What’s a piece you’ve had in your wardrobe for more than five years you can’t live without?
Most of my wardrobe is over 5 years old. I never throw anything out unless it is unwearable (usually sweaters that have shrunk or been eaten) and I only give away items that no longer fit. Even if they are out of style they just get put away for a few years and brought out again.
Off topic, despite my better judgement, I may have to order something in Elizabeth Suzann’s Georgia line. I swore I would not after she tightened the neckline, but since she finally added a “neutral colour” I feel I must try it/support this. (Rust? But it reads as an old rose on my screen and my screen is usually spot on in ES.) There is a lovely slip dress as well, but I prefer to cover my upper arms for a number of reasons, and slip dresses are just generally less versatile for me.
Considering I still have & wear things from high school (1986-90) are we sure you want me to answer this question? 😉 Getting rid of clothing is VERY hard for me, due to hoarding tendencies and size variation. But as I changed seasons last summer and now, I’m challenging myself to get rid of stuff I don’t really want to wear (no matter the size -if it fits now or is a “hopeful” size). When I was losing weight a few years back, I got a TON of stuff at thrift stores because I needed something to wear and then I went crazy at a smaller size (not a lot of 16-18 in thrift stores…) But I would rather have 2-3 three pairs pants I LOVE and repeat than multiple pairs of things I don’t love. Apparently the damn Kondo got to me eventually 😉
I’m ready to curl up in warm sweaters & boots…..
i LOVE the new “colors” lol – the rust is really beautiful. it looks to me to be not quite as “rosy” … it’s really stunning, actually.
I love this post, Grechen. I have a pair of black custom measured leather clogs that I got 22 years ago that have been re-soled twice and re-conditioned several times. They’re the best, comfiest, most supportive shoes I have, and because they were measured to my feet by a Swedish woman who no longer makes them, I just won’t give them up. They’re not the most stylish things in the world, but can’t see myself giving rid of them. I also have a great jean jacket from the Gap that was my Mum’s and she gave it to me like 6 years ago. It’s really soft and perfect and I throw it on all the time over everything. I love that you’ve had your cardigan for so long and it’s so cozy and comfy.
I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t keep much items that long due to boredom, constant shopping and weight fluctuations. I’ve also had significant lifestyle/job/location changes.
So, I had to dig deep and found 1. Yay! My Current Elliott BF jeans (the original). Although I haven’t worn it lately it has been worn hundreds of times.
I have a charcoal grey, hand knit, heavily cabled wool sweater (men’s small) that I bought at Abercrombie and Fitch in spring 1995. It’s funnel necked, oversized, and incredibly thick. It was $200 full price, but only $35 on sale. I’m still wearing it every winter, 22 years later. Doesn’t look aged at all. It has been with me though college, grad school, 2 pregnancies, various moves, and a my 19 year old cat…I’ll be buried in that thing, god willing.
Lol…re: High School clothes. You and my mother would get along great! 😉
I have several “oldies but goodies” in my closet! One I stumbled on recently is a pair of 17 year old cropped black palazzo pants. Just enough stretch and flow to them that despite two babies and a month long workout hiatus they still look/feel great to me. I have never ever found a single pair of palazzo pants other than these (from Forever 21 of all places) that look even remotely good on me! Another great piece i have been holding onto is a James Perse white v neck cross over long sleeve T-shirt from 2003. Brooks brother tan cashmere v-neck sweater. And my final shout out goes to a wine colored Ella Moss tea length dress, lace overlay with jersey lining (think t-shirt material) & satin sash…so comfortable (feels like pajamas) and versatile…
