When I buy something, I want to wear it immediately. So today, I wore the new/old Wrangler denim shirt I picked up yesterday at MOSS:
wearing: James Perse fleece skirt | Gap tank top | Vintage Wrangler denim shirt | Madewell necklace | 3.1 by Philip Lim bag | Kurt Geiger Platforms
It’s such an awesome shirt, with lots of great details. I intend to wear it tied around my waist with full skirts mostly, but today I felt like wearing it open over my old James Perse slim fleece skirt and a Gap tank top.
Clearly, I’m suffering in the photography department, but I’m doing my best to work-with-what-I’ve-got right now, which is an old point & shoot with tripod. I vowed not to take pictures inside in front of my kitchen door anymore, but unfortunately, that means less than perfect lighting outside. And most of the time I don’t have anyone else who can take my pictures…so this is it…for now anyway. If I’m under the false illusion that you guys LIKE my outfit posts, please let me know 😉 I like doing them, because as far as I know, there aren’t very many of us “average-sized” bloggers posting outfit pictures and I like to give an idea of how I work with things in my wardrobe.
And speaking of working with things, I loved Sally’s post today: “Can’t Wear That” where she addresses some of her most infuriating style “guidelines” – like short girls can’t wear maxi skirts. I love her reaction to the “rules” (read them!) and totally agree. I’m short (5’3″) and love to wear maxi skirts, maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think I get “lost” in them, but honestly, I’ve never even thought about it. I just wear what I want, most of the time 😉 I do get comments frequently though, when I post a maxi dress or skirt, that “oh, I’m short, I can’t wear that” to which I want to reply, “have you tried”?
So, fellow short girls, do you wear long skirts/dresses?
Thanks for the shout-out, beautiful! And I think maxis are one of the most feared garments currently on the market. I’m with you: Try one! Decide for yourself if you love it or hate it. Yours looks FAB.

haha – why are they so feared?? i don’t understand…
thanks for your great post 🙂
I read Sal’s post this morning too, and I couldn’t agree with you and her more. I hate the rules that say what women of a certain type should avoid. You’ll never know unless you try right?? And I love your long skirts Grechen- you always look so chic and effortless. I’m actually on the hunt for a maxi dress right now….. wish me luck!
oh!!! good luck 🙂 you’ll find something super-cute, i know it!
I’m only 5’2″ and I can’t get enough of maxi skirts and dresses! I almost feel like I look taller when I’m wearing them. They certainly make you like nice and tall!

I’ll admit, I’m a bit apprehensive about maxi skirts although most of it comes from finding the right length and shoes to go with them.
I think you look awesome in your maxis. You get the top proportions right and it makes you look tall.
I haven’t read that post yet, but most rules are made to be broken, but there are just some things that I might say to hell with, but I know it isn’t the absolute most flattering silhoutte.

see, you’re apprehensive about maxi skirts and i’m apprehensive about color! i LOVE your tucker dress, but i’d probably never even try it on…it’s so bright!!!
i usually wear skirts that are either short or midi length, and i’m 5’3″. i LOVE a midi length skirt, especially one i got from Shabd’s FW 2009 collection. wear what you love, and figure out how to rock it on your body. i love sally’s message in her post. seriously. we need to get over “trends” and “rules”. true style isn’t dictated by any industry.
also, grechen, i was convinced you were much taller than 5’3″ in your maxis. your outfits are truly creating the illusion of length!!
I think we’re always afraid to go “outside the box” with something that will certainly get us noticed. I have the same skirt as you, Grechen, but I haven’t even worn it yet!!! (I guess you’d call that fear, or maybe cowardice!!)
Forgot to say that I just read something that Rachel Zoe had written/said (can’t remember where I saw it) about Maxi skirts/dresses making her look “extra long” and tall. And that’s comin’ from “The Zoe” herself!
yes!! i love that val! it makes sense…
WEAR THE SKIRT!!!!
i tried on a midi-length skirt at madewell recently and i wanted so bad for it to work…but since my calves are heavy, it just didn’t; the length of the skirt made them look even bigger!! but i tried it 🙂
and see, the illusion is working! i’m really short!!!
If I do, I’ll gather up my courage and post a pic for you!! (for your eyes only, until I get braver!)
oh yay! can’t wait 🙂
Fashion styling should be fun so us girls should wear whatever, however we want. The rule is to break the rules, and most of the time it comes out fresh and unique!
