The majority of my outfit today is made in the USA (Eileen Fisher, Everlane & Admonish). I don’t talk about this all the time, but part of the reason (other than styles) that I’m obsessed with James Perse, Splendid, AG jeans, etc., is that they’re all made in the US. If I can, and there’s an option, I will always purchase a similar item that’s made in the US. It’s why I won’t be buying these Madewell jeans, even though I loved them; I’ll get a pair of AG jeans instead.
I know that my choosing to buy most items made in the US isn’t going to solve all the world’s problems, and I know that even though the item might be put together here, it quite probably is from material that is imported. But it’s something, and I do know that it’s important. To me anyway π
I also try and choose natural beauty products as much as possible, but that’s REALLY hard. Besides sticking to Caudalie for my skincare, most of my makeup is not natural. But today I put on my RMS beauty un-coverup and am quite pleased with how it looks. The rest of my makeup is NOT natural; in fact I feel very un-natural today with my smokey eye and lipstick (albeit nude lipstick..). I don’t know what got into me though, I just started with the eyeliner and ended up here π
While you probably already know what I’m going to say, I’ll say it anyway: “You look gorgeous in this makeup style!!” You should seriously do a smokey eye everyday. It could become your signature! Your eyes are one of your best features, so why not play them up? Just think, 5 minutes, and boom! You’ve just elevated your look. GREAT job, btw!
Oh, and this outfit is perfection. I would totally wear it (maybe not the harem pants, but I’d sub in a great maxi or midi skirt!). Lovin’ that necklace.
lol. i don’t even know what i’m doing, or if this is actually a “smokey eye” – i just put eyeliner on and smudged it a bit, then some mascara π LOVE LOVE LOVE that giorgio armani mascara though, it’s my new fave
i just feel too made up. a friend and i were out last night and i played around with some mac matte lipsticks and liked a darker one, but totally felt like a drag queen (no offense to drag queens..) with lipstick on. And that’s kind of how i feel with my eyes all done up – just NOT ME. although i know it looks good (leo likes it), and realistically it’s not NEARLY as “made up” as i could be, but it’s a lot more made up than i’m used to.
Good post. I’m not always aware of where the clothing I purchase is made .. but I suppose I should be and yes, every little purchase helps someone, somewhere in the USA.
Natural makeup is hard, so I stopped buying. I mean, natural products just don’t work as well for my oily skin, but I have been trying to purchase more organic lip products and body lotions.
Monica.
I really like your style, and this is no exception. I love the thought and the type of mix you create. This just works for me! It is very chic, but comfortably casual. Love the grey and black, and the details in the necklace, shoes, bag (and toenail polish!:)) It just looks quite contemporary and I am inspired.
Thank you!
Your makeup looks great! While I won’t refuse to purchase something not made in the USA, it is nice when I find something that was. I also appreciate and seek out other environmental considerations like organic cotton, environmentally sound dyeing processes, etc.
thanks! i don’t generally refuse to buy things not made in the US, but if i have another option and i can afford it, i’ll choose the item made in the US. i do try to pay attention to every part of a company’s practices though, like eileen fisher – not everything is made in the US, but generally i appreciate her ethical business practices.
thank you! love that you noticed the toenail polish π and of course, grey and black is easy for me…it’s pretty much all I own!!!
I get what you’re saying about it not feeling like “you,” but I also think it’s good to change things up once in a while…to challenge ourselves, whether it be in service to others, what we read, where we choose to go to dinner, or even something as mundane as our eye makeup! Remember that it sometimes takes our “eye” a little time to get used to something. I don’t think you look “madeup” at all. But then again, that’s what I used to do for a living. And I was the “natural” makeup artist!! You look great.
you are absolutely right. and this is the year of pushing boundaries for me…i mean, harem pants, smokey eye…next stop BLONDE π
Oh Lordy! What have I done!?!?
I tried to leave this comment yesterday — computer issues/tech ignorance issues on my part….
This is maybe my favorite outfit of yours ever. I believe a grey top like that is the sexiest thing a woman can wear, especially with ‘edgy’ other stuff. Just overall, especially with that necklace and your shoes — it’s perfect, and so cool. Like, timelessly cool – a young girl would want this outfit as much as a more mature woman might. Also – the makeup and hair is so good! I have similar coloring to yours and had ‘blonde’ bits (I can’t accept that it’s blonde but it is) dyed in and I kind of love it. I have no expertise but I think you could go blonder — but maybe you were joking, right??
i am going blond! next week…maybe not full-on yet, i may have to transition into it, and it’ll be more of a dirty blond, but i’m doing it!!!
I thought you were kidding! I have always loved your hair. But let’s face it: Hair is hair. You can express yourself with it, and if you’re feeling blonde, go for it!! Do you have any pics of what you like? I find that can really help. Find someone with your coloring and then clip out the pics.
this is the color/style i’m going for: http://stylenews.peoplestylewatch.com/2010/10/21/scarlett-johansson-hair-new-bob/ – although not so short in the back.
i also like rachel antonoff’s hair color here: http://pinterest.com/pin/188940146840403908/
Make sure and deep condition a LOT before you go. You want your hair to be in the best possible shape before you get it colored and make a big change. I like Scar-Jo’s cut a lot! I think the back is what helps give it edginess. Are you sure you don’t want to do that part? The color could work, too. At first, I thought she was more olive than you, but she’s pretty fair underneath the makeup. Cool! I can’t wait to see it!! And I’m sure your stylist will have valuable input. Pics when you’re done, of course;-)
i really want my hair to just be straight across and layered a bit at the length (like she has in the front) instead of up in the back like a bob – i’ve had that, and i think right now it’s too “extreme” a look for me, you know? i want messy, easy, simple, all one length π maybe NOT edgy anymore. hmmm….
I hear ya’…and the only way you’ll know you like it is if you try it! Good luck on the growing out period. You seem to be doing very well with that. (I always give up and cut mine before it gets to where I want it!)
