This top caused a lot of controversy at Splendid…everyone who tried it on hated it and loved it at the same time. Hated it because it’s really quite unflattering, and loved it because it was so cozy. When I tried it on, I decided NOT to pair it with slim bottoms, and I think that actually helps the top look more “balanced” ironically. I’m wearing an XS, which as you can see it still rather drape-y, but not too big, which also helps. It’s so cozy, and it takes everything I have not to wear it everyday. The problem with Splendid thermal tops though, is that they do snag easily, I’ve got a couple of snags already, and they don’t look great. I snip the extra threads off, but you’re still left with a little imperfection. Kind of disappointing, but I’m not sure what Splendid can do about it…I just have to be more careful with my jewelry.
If you have a Splendid store nearby, they’re still accepting 5 new or gently used books for donation in exchange for 50% off one item, so get in there!! There’s no limit to how many books you can take in; I took in 30 or so books and left with lots of great pieces for 50% off!! I’m still stunned at what a great deal that was, and was also excited to share my love of reading with a great charity. Contact your store for details – I know it supposed to go on until January 3rd, but each store may be different.
Hope you’re getting ready for the new year!!! Any resolutions you want to share? I’ll go first and tell you want I want NOT to do as much next year: worry so much. I get consumed by worry, which wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t over things I can’t do ANYTHING about. I need to do better at letting go of the things I can’t control…Once I’m doing everything I can to “fix” a problem, I need to let go of it and stop worrying so much…
Easier said than done, I’m sure 🙂
Cute outfit! I love Splendid thermal, but I really love the thermal tops, skirts from R&R Surplus! It is the new label fior the Fitigues brand. Do you remember them? They make great pieces, and are a small, family owned company. I giot one of their thermal tops for Christmas, along with their french terry legging.
Good luck on your resolution! I need to do the same! 😉
You look happy and comfortable and put-together and that’s what matters. You don’t sacrifice style for comfort, nor should you. I don’t think the top is unflattering at all. I think the necklace makes the outfit: It creates a nice V line and focal point. It elevates the outfit from walking the dog to going out for lunch. (And I think this is the first time I get a really good look at that necklace, which you’ve worn a lot but its details weren’t evident from your Austin balcony posts. It looks even better up close.)
As for New Year’s resolutions, I’m going to try to cook more and buy fewer clothes and accessories. I’ll still hang out here, though–I just need to keep my credit card zipped away! 🙂
I think it looks great, but then again, I have one in navy! And I don’t care if it’s flattering or not on me, because it’s my go-to at home top. I agree, though, that it snags easily (and the cat always seems to gravitate toward me when I’m wearing said cozy top!). But you’ve styled it to perfection!
No resolutions for me. I think I’ve finally gotten to a point in life where I realize that I never keep them. But I WILL try for personal betterment!
um. this dress?? http://randrsurplus.com/womens/holiday-2013-collection?product_id=572 dying right now….
how’s the sizing?
haha! please don’t leave!!! i need to buy less also, but then again, i always say that… i have so many wonderful pieces already in my closet, that i never wear. instead of adding to them, i need to do better at wearing what i have. but i’m such a shopaholic; i can always justify any new purchase.
thanks for your words on the outfit – i definitely agree that my new location is much better for outfit shots – i love the sun shinning behind and really illuminating everything. and you can see details better!
i don’t care if it’s flattering or not either – obviously – but really, i don’t think it’s that bad. on some of the shorter ladies (shorter than me, if you can believe it!), it was just too big and took over, but i think that by playing with proportions and trying something other than skinny on the bottom, the whole outfit flows instead of getting the contrast of a large, billowy top and slim bottoms; which is ultimately what made the top LOOK so unflattering on others…
yay for personal betterment 🙂 i need to go for that too…but i still have lots of little specific things i need to work on.
I love that dress! I have talked to the sales girl, and she said it fits tight. Go up a size. I haven’t ordered it yet. I have 3 of the drop tail thermal shirts and I feel like those are normal sizing. They will take returns, and refund your money. Let me know if you order anything!
Cute, comfy look. I think it’s a great top, though agreed- it’s all in how it’s styled. I love R&R Surplus too. The dresses and skirts are cut extremely narrow, and almost taper toward the bottom. They are not “supportive” like the JP pencil skirt, for example, so personally I think you have to be a stick to pull these off. I am slim with curves, and every time I try on one of their dresses or skirts I can’t get over how unflattering they are. The tops however, are great! They also have a cute layered hoodie/vest type of jacket (kind of army style), that I saw on Singer22. Very good quality, casual styles.
I know it seems counterintuitive to vow a shopping fast and yet hang out on a shopping blog! But I figure that when I am ready to purchase something I really need, I’ll have done my research first. 🙂
I’m getting more judicious in my purchases. I eschew trendy things. (Remember neon from last year? I never indulged.) I also look at everything from an economic viewpoint. That leather jacket I crave is the price of a plane ticket to Europe. Those designer harem pants are the price of one night in a fancy hotel. Those “it” shoes are the price of three hours of work, and wouldn’t I rather spend three hours of “me” time? Then there’s the “cost” of the real estate–the space additional things take up in my closet and I have to physically deal with and make room for and store in the off season. So, I find it harder to justify purchases when I could be doing other things with my time and money and closet.
Having said that, the blowout sale at Ssense is killing me! I did buy a Helmut top. Couldn’t resist. 😉
Laurel, I know that we hear it all the time, but the way that you stated your case with concrete examples of what my money COULD buy (Instead of 10 cheapo tops at Target, a nice dinner out with my husband!), made me really think about what I’m spending my hard-earned money on, and what I could be DOING with it instead of “collecting.” And what I’m collecting is NOT worth it!! Well, sometimes…..
You styled it just right, IMO. I’m a big woman, so I got it big, and I think that for me, styling it “Big on top, small on the bottom” works. But I get what you’re saying. Happy New Year!!
So glad my comment was helpful! I’ve recently put this economic equation into action. This Christmas, my boyfriend and I did not buy each other gifts (which would have been expensive clothes). Instead, we are going to Quebec City for a mid-winter holiday, taking the first-class train and staying in a swanky hotel. I can’t wait! Of course I will do a bit of shopping whilst there–the women of Quebec City are very chic.
Amazing! I love it when stores find a way to give back to their community, and reward their shoppers at the same time.
Splendid is the absolute best for staples–always comfortable. I don’t think that top looks unflattering at all!
Have a great new year!

Hi Gretchen. .. I saw this and thought of you
Such comfy casual! I am totally in love with Dannijo necklaces, there isn’t a single one I’ve seen that I haven’t just wanted to kiss (so I’m a bit weird about it!). Totally spice up even the most plain outfit.
