Shaina Mote tie-dress | I’m wearing size 4
Robert Clergerie Gavale slides
Admonish leather tote | (mine is distressed black)
So, I got my newest Robert Clergerie sandals on Friday, and to be honest, I was toying with sending them back. I love them, and they’re ridiculously comfortable, but, I wondered if I could justify adding them to my collection. And then I put them on with my Goldsign jeans and black James Perse t-shirt to think about wearing to lunch with Leo and he looked at me, and said “I like those shoes, you look nice” Doesn’t sound like much to you, probably, but believe me, to get my husband to say anything besides “it’s fine,” or mutter under his breath about my “activist” shoes, to anything I’m wearing is stunning. He even told me why he likes the sandals: because they’re not huge or clunky. Which they decidedly are not.
So, I’m ABSOLUTELY keeping them now! Anyway, like I said, they’re really comfortable, if very flat, and add a little interest to whatever it is I’m wearing; they’re sort of my “fancy” sandals LOL. AND I love them with this dress. This outfit actually is what I’ve decided to wear on Friday night of my step-son’s bar mitvah weekend the end of this month, to synagogue and then out to the first of his “parties” at Seasons52. The only thing is that I need to cover my arms during the service, so I think I’ll bring along my light, open Demy Lee sweater (very old) to throw on top. I just hate to do that with this dress though, because it detracts from the overall look. I can remove the sweater for dinner, though, unless I’m cold. Ugh.
I thought of a “wrap,” but then, I don’t want to blend in too much with his grandparents 😉
So, one outfit down, a few more to go. Actually, I’m going to wear my long black Acne Studios dress with my James Perse soft twill blazer on Saturday morning to his actual bar mitzvah service. I still need to figure out my outfit for Saturday night’s party at the country club and then brunch Sunday at his grandparents’ house. Apparently there IS a dress-code for both of those events. I mean…
Finally, if you saw my instagram yesterday I posted the weather for this week, which is hot, hot and even more hot. I’m talking 105-106 degrees. So I’m not sure I’m going to actually wear “clothing” or post “outfits” – but we’ll see. Most of the time, I can avoid being outside much if I’m actually “dressed” in something other than my dog-walking clothes, but even so, I will sometimes have to take three showers when it’s this hot, and it wears you down (and no, there is NO deodorant that “works” in this heat). You have to rest from just being outside for 15 minutes. But. At least it’s a dry heat! No, that’s really a thing. Here, we walk outside when it’s 105 and feel like our skin is going to burn off, or we might spontaneously combust, but at least I can breathe better than in the 90 degree heat and 98% humidity that is central Florida at my dad’s house. I don’t feel like I’m going to melt into a puddle here.
Sometimes I wonder which is worse. Other times, I just try to wear as little as possible and stay in air conditioning.
Hope you have a great week planned!!!
Love that dress on you. Good choice. I know the frustration about covering up, but the sad truth is that no-one but us cares 🙂
yes, you’re absolutely right about that…
thank you !
That dress is absolutely perfect! I love it so much! You have the best taste.
This heat is brutal! We’re moving back to Iowa for a year on Friday, and I have to say I’m happy about that (for the moment, anyway — I sure won’t be happy when it’s 20 degrees in October, ugh. I hate the cold). It doesn’t look like Austin will be quite as hot as Dallas this week, but I still feel so sorry for my poor chickens, who just pant and sit under the bushes all day!
Julia´s last blog post ..Moving back to Iowa at the end of this week! Ack. These are the…
When I clicked on this post in feedly, I immediately thought, “Well, she should definitely wear that the bar mitzvah weekend!” You look stunning!
Grechen – you look beautiful – and more important – happy! I love this on you.
ha! yes, perfect 🙂
thank you so much.
oh wow! that’ll be a big change. i think i hate the cold more than i hate the heat actually. i mean, i don’t love either, but i can never seem to warm up when it’s cold. at least i can regulate my temperature a bit more in the heat. i think i’m meant to live in a more temperate climate LOL
can’t wait to follow along with your adventures in iowa!
thank you so much chris !!
I laughed when I read your husband’s comments. Mine feels the same way about chunky shoes and it is such a shock to hear him express an opinion that I take it more seriously than I might otherwise. Leo has good taste! Those shoes…and that dress…look absolutely beautiful on you.
yeah, if he says he likes something, i probably put a lot more stock into it than i should. but i love these sandals, his liking them just makes them better. and can justify my keeping them, for sure. of course, now he’ll probably get tired of seeing them LOL
just got the same sandals and wore them all over france for two weeks straight. they are sooo comfy. my first pair of robert cleregerie’s and i’m a fan! they look great on you too. -(long time lurker 🙂 )
oh! did you get them in france??? if so, i’m SUPER jealous!
beware…you’ll become like me and stalk every pair now!! the good thing is that they ALWAYS go on sale 🙂
You look great! The sandals look classy. 🙂 I can’t wear super flat shoes anymore, so I have embraced the chunky shoe/activist look wholeheartedly, ha.
As for a deodorant that will work at least in 90+ heat, have you tried Crystal Body Deodorant? I do need to reapply in the evening if I sweated a lot that day, but it is honestly the only thing I have tried in my whole life that makes me NOT stink. I still sweat a lot since it doesn’t have anti-perspirant, but I am okay with the trade-off. It also leaves no residue whatsoever, so I now have to wash my black tops and dresses a lot less as long as they aren’t actually dirty or smelly. 🙂 I will say the one odd thing about it is that even though I don’t smell at all, my clothes can still smell at the end of the day. This mostly happens with my workout tops.
Love your choices for the Bar Mitzvah weekend.
I have been to what I feel is a zillion bar and bat mitzvahs. For evening events I have often admired those women who wear a very simple black sheath with great heels and killer jewelry. If it is dressy, women tend to bring a dressier chiffon wrap. These women look so chic and perfect. This outfit works for w more formal event or even a kids party.. mazal tov!
I LOVE this dress on you. And the sandals are great.
One thing–have you considered hemming it a bit? Like a few inches so some of your ankle shows? I’m just curious as to how it would look–seems like it might be flattering. You could pin it up to see how it looks without actually hemming it.
What type of fabric is the dress–it is a crisp poplin, or more drapey?
Never mind on the fabric question–I just read the product description. 😉
What are the actual measurements on your dress?
yes, i was actually thinking i would take it to be hemmed before the bar mitzvah…i think i need to show a little ankle 😉
it’ll just be more expensive probably because i don’t want to lose the slit on the side, they’d have to extend that also, i think. which shouldn’t be a problem, obviously, but just more $$
the dress is rayon, but a heavy rayon, not like the everlane stuff or any other rayon i’ve ever had. so it falls really nicely.
no idea what the actual measurements are – i can get it for you if you’re interested though, although my tape measure is a bit wonky, so won’t be exact.
I love this dress with the sandals on you! You look beautiful. 🙂
Great choice for the Bar Mitzvah. I understand your motivation in keeping the sandals. When my hubby likes something on me, I tend to keep it and wear it more often. But I still dress to please myself most often.
I laughed at “It’s a dry heat.” I have the perfect greeting card for that situation. 😉
Tee hee .. I have dog walking clothes too ~ which are NOT appropriate for my blog .. lol.

Hi Grechen,
Fantastic blog and thank you for the information on Robert Clergierie. I’m about to purchase my first pair, just not sure what size to buy. If possible, can you compare the fit to another brand. I’m finding even within brands sizing can be inconsistent (e.g. Prada). I generally wear a size eight, brands that run narrow are the best. I am eyeing the Buckle sandals. Thanks in advance.
Hi Helen! honestly, in every other shoe brand, i feel like i’m very consistently a size 8. i’ve had a couple pairs or prada linea rossa sandals and i was always an 8 in those. In rachel comey i’m always a size 8 – no6 clogs, always a 39, repetto, 39. robert clergerie, 38.5…rag & bone is completely inconsistent. vince i always size down a 1/2 size…
my best advice is to try and look for reviews, but if you can’t, just follow the US/French size charts and you maybe you’ll luck out 😉
