On Instagram yesterday you may have seen a peek of this outfit. I got it in my head I wanted to wear this exact outfit, so I did. I did that thing where I just put on my outfit and quickly walked out the door, without giving myself a lot of time to second-guess myself, as I do sometimes. (you may recall I made myself do this for quite some time a couple years ago, and it was liberating! sadly, it’s hard to stick to such discipline)
I was happy overall with the outfit, and felt comfortable, but by the end of the day, I had learned a few things:
- I just don’t like short dresses on me, especially flared ones like this. If I’m going to wear short, I need to either have a belted/cinched waist, or a slimmer fit.
- You have to be more aware of where you sit in a short dress. I pretty literally burned the backs of my legs yesterday sitting on a metal chair that had been out in the sun. I may have yelped it was so shocking.
- Layer on top, not underneath, especially if it’s supposed to get hot. It got up to the mid-80’s yesterday and I was HOT, but couldn’t remove my layer. Not that I’m particularly ready to bare my arms completely right now…
- I cannot wear “shoes” when it gets hot, I don’t even like to have my toes covered; if my feet are hot, I’m hot. Thankfully, it works the other way around too, which is why if I get really hot in bed stuck between my husband and Dagny, I can just stick my foot out from under the covers, and poof! instant relief. All that is to say that I will be wearing sandals pretty exclusively from now on, unless I’m traveling, or need to wear shoes for some reason. Which is fabulous, because my beek sandals arrived yesterday from Shopbop, and they are AMAZING. Flat sandals with arch support?? Yes, please.
Just some random thoughts for a Friday. I’m really excited for warmer weather, sandals and dresses, what about you?
Oh, and thoughts on the new Everlane poplin shirt dress? I am actually quite drawn to it (love shirt dresses) and intend to order it in a size 8, but don’t have very high hopes for it fitting me well. Mostly, I just want to try it, and review it for you guys, if you’re interested, because I do not need another dress in my closet. I think it’s sort of fun though, and could look very chic with the right shoe, their new slip-in loafers for example…
I also have a few Everlane tank tops coming next week to review FYI. Oh, and it’s worth it to check the comments on this Everlane Reviews post for more reader comments that trickle in.
This looks so good on you, Grechen! A bit schoolgirl, I think, but not in a bad way. I have an Eileen Fisher sleeveless dress in black that I usually wear over jeans and I layer underneath because it’s wool, but I tried it with a grey top last week and kind of hated it. I can only pair it with black tops. You make me want to try this again, though. It’s such a relaxed, casual look.
I’m seeing some really cute shapes on Everlane: like the oversized short-sleeve poplin shirt in blue-white stripes. I love that they show actual garment measurements. That’s helpful, since size numbers are often curious today.
The shoes sound interesting. Are they out? You’ll make a concert of me yet! 😉
the shoes aren’t available to buy yet. but they’re out 😉 can’t say more than that right now…
i like the striped poplin, which is weird, because i don’t normally go for stripes, or patterns, or whatever – as you know. i’m wearing the striped poplin long sleeve shirt right now, actually…
I just came across your blog and must say you look cute in most of your outfits.
This dress however doesn’t do anything for you.
You should stick to the longer ones and in general, not sure if you heard about ‘Colour me beautiful’, there’s a piece of advice for everyone that says: never let a clothing item end at your widest part, in your case it would be the legs. If you put on a longer dress, it’s definitely more flattering on you 🙂
