Wow. What a great trip to New Orleans! We were only there overnight Friday night, but honestly, it was enough. I was impressed with the city (it had been more than 15 years since I was there) and besides accidentally having to walk a block or two on bourbon street, I found it to be clean and everything very “orderly” LOL.
The food was amazing, our hotel was great, and the wedding was so beautiful. I don’t really know the bride or groom, the groom is a friend of my husband’s from high school, so I felt a tiny bit out of place there, but another friend of my husband’s from high school was there with his wife, 19-month old, and his parents, whom I really enjoy spending time with, so it was a little easier to bear. (I’m an extreme introvert IRL…)
The groom is a professional musician in nolo so the music was really fun. They had a string quartet playing during the wedding that played Led Zeppelin while the groomsmen and bridesmaids walked down the aisle and Queen for the bride. How cool is that?? The ceremony was a bit irreverent, but sweet, which seemed in keeping with the style of both the bride and the groom.
I wore my black JP dress and Virginia Johnson shawl and was totally comfortable. Oh, and the Naot pixie sandals were AMAZING. We didn’t walk to the venue but decided to walk back because it was only just over a mile, and I had no problems in the sandals. I was shocked actually, because I thought for sure I’d get a blister or some rubbing somewhere, but no, nothing. And Leo liked them. BONUS 🙂
I really have to work on my airplane outfits though, and might have to pack just a little less light to do it. Both flights I was so cold. I wore jeans, a t-shirt, Organic by John Patrick potato sweater, James Perse jacket and my shawl like a blanket. For shoes, I wore my Nike sneakers with smartwool socks, and my TOES FROZE. My legs were cold, my arms were cold, everything was just COLD. Where are my hot flashes when I need them???
In the name of packing light (lighter than I really need to, honestly), I am usually very spare about what I bring, and if I’m not going to wear it/use it at my destination, it never makes the cut. I am going to rethink that for my next plane trip. I don’t have another airplane trip planned until August – we’re going to Charleston for our anniversary 🙂 – so I have time. Thank goodness. I was so uncomfortable and stressed out on the plane. Literally, being cold is the ONLY thing I pack to try and avoid. I pour so much attention into it and have so much anxiety surrounding it. And then I get cold anyway. Ha.
Are you as strict with your packing as I am? How do you avoid being cold on the plane? or are you one of the lucky ones who just doesn’t get as cold??
Happy Monday!
I usually wear wool socks (smartwool no-show’s or compression socks if it’s a long flight) on the plane, but I remember that you are anti-sock, so that probably doesn’t help!
haha.. yes, i am anti-sock, but i wore my smartwool socks and they totally didn’t help!! what else am i supposed to do? my mom always carries those hand warmer packets with her, maybe i need to start doing that for my feet. ugh…
I wonder what causes our bodies to react so differently to flying. I am one of those people who gets very hot and red-faced when flying. That’s my usual reaction when I get anxious, though. On my last flight, I overheard another woman say, “Oh no, my face is red again,” so I know it happens to others, too. My skin and lips also get very dry and I’m constantly thirsty when I fly. So much for convenience, ha ha.
Your wedding outfit was gorgeous and you looked so lovely. I’m glad you had a great time! 🙂
I suffered hot flashes as a side effect of infertility meds during treatment and when I wasn’t hot, I was so-so-so cold. I always take a shawl or light blanket (pashminas, or I just bought a new-to-me Uniqlo 2-in-1 stole that would be perfect for this), and if I’m really “bones-cold” chilly, I put on a hat (just a beanie or something). Socks + hat + wrap will get you a long way toward warm!
Love those Naot sandals. So glad they are comfy!
So glad you enjoyed your trip!!
I’m lucky (?) I run hot. I mean, that’s not ideal in NC in August, but on planes it’s great. Except when you’re on a plane that doesn’t have individual climate contols and you’re boiling over, stripping down to almost public indecency….I do wear layers so I am warm for the 1-2 times it’s been an issue, but usually I’m down to the light pants (that’s ALL I wear when I fly -never a dress or skirt or heaven forbid shorts – I do NOT want my skin touching anything on a plane or in an airport…) and tank or tee. I just vary the weight of the pants & shirts by season & climate where I’ll land….Then I carry a cardigan & scarf too (I always plan my packing list utilizing what I bring on the plane too…) Usually wear privo mary janes for travel, but I have slipper socks in my carryon too (for longer flights when I want to take off my shoes in-flight, and to use in the hotel/apartment upon arrival)
I’m usually freezing too. Unless I’m too hot 🙂 No matter what the season or destination, I always, always bring my Patagonia down sweater on the plane. It seems to do the trick.
I usually pack too much so for my last trip, I pared it way down so all I had was a backpack and a carry-on – and I was mostly happy with the results, except it snowed in my destination when it wasn’t supposed to (Salt Lake City) so I was pretty cold during the trip. Typically I do get pretty cold on airplanes…but DFW was like a sauna that weekend! It was hot in the airport, hot on the plane, hot hot HOT. Both coming and going.
My plane outfit was Girlfriend Collective leggings, Knixwear evolution tank, a rayon/spandex top, and my chunky cardigan from Everlane (actually from slowre – so happy I snagged that one 🙂 ), and sneakers. The leggings and tank are made of performance fabric so I think having a close-to-body layer of performance fabric helped. Also I am pregnant so maybe I imagined I was more hot than it actually was? But a lot of people seemed really hot on those flights!
Red-face camp here for flights, so depressing to see my face each time I go to the bathroom 🙂
I wonder whether your freezing toes would be a symptom of blood circulation issues (like the red face most likely!!), meaning you need more support/compression socks than smart wool socks for flying?
Your outfit was definitely perfect for the wedding.
Also, I remember some comments in a different post regarding non-vegan/vegan Birkenstocsk. Just came across these , advertised as “Vegan” (I’ve been wearing the Sydney for years, I find the design less “clunky” than the traditional Arizona on my narrow feet).

I’m with you, Catherine! I’m always so warm and the only air is the one that blasts you in the eye from the little overhead “thingy”!
Jeans are not warm! They are only too warm when it is hot outside, lol. Cotton is a cold fabric…always feels cold. I never wear jeans on a flight. I probably would have taken my shawl and wrapped up my feet, lol.
I get cold on planes, always. But I run cold all the time. I usually wear merino or cashmere for flights — warm, doesn’t get too stinky. Cotton always feels clammy. I don’t fly in jeans. I’ve worn just about everything else: leggings, dress-over-leggings, wool trousers, hiking pants, yoga pants, linen pants — they’re all better than jeans. I love my down jacket — if it ends up being too much to wear on the plane, it makes a good little pillow or lap-blanket. And if I’m flying anytime between October and April, I have a wool hat of some sort with me. What I haven’t been able to solve is the dehydration. I drink all the water they offer me, and don’t do any caffeine or alcohol anymore when I fly, but I still end up SO dehydrated and borderline-sick every time I take a plane (or bus or train for that matter). That recycled air is no good. :-/
nice! i like that style too….
I am always hot on planes.
Have you tried Uniqlo’s “ultra warm” heattech leggings and/or shirts? I know Uniqlo is “fast fashion”, but all my Uniqlo pieces wear like iron and last for many years. You might be able to layer the ultra warm pieces under your destination clothing for comfort on the plane. My office is freezing (about 52 degrees) most of the year, so I layer them under my work attire.
Second Uniqlo Heattech! It’s lightweight and really lasts. Not ideal that it’s fast fashion, but it’s the best solution I’ve found for warmth. Also, for your toes, Grechen, I’m wondering if increasing your circulation on the plane would help. This is going to sound hopelessly middle-aged, but I am a fan of compression socks, especially on long flights. It’s not the most fashion-y look, I realize, and they’re kind of a pain to put on and take off but I think it’s worth it not to have swollen feet or achey legs. Sometimes I skip it for short flights but if I’m going cross country or international I always put them on and I’m always glad I’ve done it.
