I am of the opinion that you should try and look your best every time you leave your house; I don’t mean dress up to go to breakfast or the grocery store, but don’t wear your pajamas either! Like it or not, appearance is important, it’s the first impression, after all, why not make it a good one? That said, I do sometimes wear things that aren’t AS flattering on me than other things. I mean, if I just wore long, wide-leg jeans and sky-high platforms all the time, that would be boring, right?
I think the fact that I KNOW what’s flattering on me and what’s not makes it more difficult for me to try or wear new things, but sometimes I just have to. And really, who does it hurt if I wear something a little less flattering than something else? Does anyone even notice?
Case in point: this Madewell skirt –
It. Is. stunning. I didn’t buy it, but am kind of kicking myself now that I didn’t. Yes, it hits me mid-calf, which is THE MOST UNFLATTERING place for skirts/pants to hit my leg (it’s my widest part), so it’s not as slimming on me as a longer or a knee-length skirt would be. But my waist looked tiny and the skirt fit perfectly over my hips. The color is perfect (goes great with everything), and it has POCKETS!! (I don’t ever use pockets, but they’re nice to have ;)) So, I looked short and a little stumpy because I was wearing flats…but so what?
Every outfit doesn’t have to be perfect, does it?
Girl! I struggle with this all the time… So many things I love aesthetically aren’t right for my coloring or body shape. I don’t believe in perfect either, so sometimes they make it home with me anyway. I’d rather wear what makes me happy!
I LOVE that skirt! You know me though, I’d hem it to the middle of my knees 🙂
I like what Jinah said, “Wear what makes you happy!” I am “horizontally challenged” and I love my stripes! I don’t care how many stylists say that I’m not supposed to wear them, because they make me happy and I think I look darned cute when I’m put together with my striped nautical shirt, my floral scarf, my rolled up khakis and my oxfords. What is perfect, anyway?
I’ve been thinking of the same thing, lately. I’ve only recently decided to not make it as important to only stick with what is most flattering, but to wear what I love and be comfortable with it. It truly makes me happier!
*preach*
i get too caught up in “perfect” sometimes. it’s kind of boring 😉
yes. you would. but you can actually wear this length well!! but you’ve given me an idea…maybe i’ll buy it when it goes on sale, wear it for a while this length and then hem it to a more “classic,” flattering length later…
you’re so right! it doesn’t. but i struggle with this all. the. time.
My problem is that I don’t know what’s that flattering on me. I used to be stick thin & could wear anything! I’m still pretty small, but I have a 2yr.old & just had a baby so I still have a belly which makes me look pregnant all the time. I guess I’m what they call a pear shaped – what are good items for that? I’m short (5 ‘2’ & about a size 2)
@June Pillay: June, trust your instincts when it comes to knowing what your like, i.e. colors, styles, etc. But if you need help figuring out what looks good on you now, there are a LOT of sites out there that give you styling help and do the “calculating” for you. For example:
http://www.dressyourbodytype.com/pearshape.php OR http://www.marieclaire.com/fashion/tips/what-to-wear/fashion-pear-shape-1007
These sites can help you figure out what’s right for a pear shape body. Or try Shopbop.com to find which jeans look good (they used to have a “jean finder”) and to decide what your “style type” is. http://www.shopbop.com/ci/3/lp/shopby-shopyourstyle.html
Hope that helps! It’s always a bit “trial and error” in my experience.
Thanks! I’ll check into those sites – i’m sure they will be helpful!
