I’m sorry, did I say I was putting my linen away??? I always seem to forget that around here, we may have a couple of “cool” days, then it ramps up again to the low 90’s, only really cooling off for good in mid-November; such a tease. Or maybe I try to block it out. Because I’m so ready for it to stay cooler. Although I’m not looking forward to it being cold; I do best in a range between 60-80 degrees F. With sunshine. I am a lizard.
Anyway, we’re taking a very quick trip to south Florida at the end of October, so I’ll wait to “put away” my linen until after that because I’ll probably take my Eileen Fisher linen dress with me. When I say “put away” what I really mean is wash it all, then hang it in the back corner of my closet to wait to be pulled out again next summer.
Because I really only wash things after every 2nd or 3rd wear (or 5th, 6th…or hardly ever for denim) I hang most things back in my closet in between wears. I have pretty distinct “home’ and “out” items, so most of the time I’m in home clothes, which, let’s be honest, get washed once a week when I have to peel them off. Other pieces that I wear out, and then take off when I get home, I put away and pull out again, keeping in the back of my mind how many times I’ve worn them, so I know when it’s time to wash them. Unless something is clearly dirty or sweaty, then I put it in the laundry immediately.
I see laundry as another way to be more environmentally conscious and keep clothing in good condition. More on that later in a “make your closet more sustainable” post, but basically I wear things as often as possible before I wash them, wash full loads in cold water with The Laundress shampoos, hang nearly everything to dry, and don’t dry clean anything. I could probably do better by hand washing to use less water, but I’m happy right now moving in the right direction.
On another completely different note, it’s Friends & Family sale season, in case you hadn’t noticed. Freda Salvador started theirs yesterday: 25% off with code INTHEFAMILY (the silver chelsea/loafers I posted a while ago are nowhere to be found now, of course, but I highly recommend their shoes in general, so comfortable, and all handmade in Spain), and Rag & Bone is offering 25% off with code OCTOBER25. Please check out Grechen’s Codes for more sales/coupons and my picks in the coming weeks.
Happy Thursday 🙂
I recently cleaned out my closet and put “summer away”. I thought about putting away all my linen, but wound up putting away patterns, chambray, pin striped and the one “color” I have which is coral. I kept my ES Harper tunic, EF black linen pants and the white linen t and shirts. I figured we will still get a few Indian Summer days here in Northern California and I can probably layer those pieces somehow with my fall/winter pieces. I am happy I did because tomorrow and Saturday are headed back to the 90’s. Whew.
I also wash my work clothes and denim only when needed (spills or funky smells). Trying to teach my girls that…not everything has to be tossed in the hamper after each wear. They are getting it as they look for things that have not been washed yet. LOL
om my gosh, when my stepson is here, he does laundry ALL THE TIME, and i try to get him to wear things more than once, but then my husband reminds me he’s a teenage boy LOL
With the exception of socks and underwear, my clothes don’t get washed every single time I wear them. Oh, and workout clothes. Because those get GROSS. I need to get better about line drying stuff instead of putting it in the dryer. I know it’ll save on the electric bill, and it’s better for clothes. I’m just….. well….. really lazy.
I never wash things after one wear, with the exception of underwear, stain/spills and sweaty clothes. If I’m clean, and my clothes are clean, how dirty can they get? I’m not rolling around in dirt!
I can’t do linen in October, though. It just feels odd in NY. But, on the other hand, it’s been such a warm fall that I almost died of heat exhaustion in my lightweight Acne merino sweater! (OK, so a little hyperbole…) 😉
