I’m about ready to wash and put away my linen for the “winter” (I don’t actually put it away very far, but I’ll fold it and put it in a drawer instead of keeping it hanging in my closet), but it’s still rather warm here so I’ll give it a few more days…
I am very particular about fabrics and seasons: linen is firmly a summer fabric, and suede is ONLY for winter. I find the idea of layering linen with cashmere in fall/winter moderately appealing, but I’ve never done it. Maybe I’ll leave my Everlane linen boyfriend shirt out for the winter and see if I can wear it…Theoretically also, this harper tunic would look nice with a cashmere cardigan on top – a nice, easy look.
Do you segment your wardrobe by fabrics also?
OH, and speaking of Elizabeth Suzann, the cold weather collection launches today. Are you ready?? Based on what I’ve seen on instagram lately, I’m excited to see what’s coming. I know there’s a long sleeve dress version of the harper tunic coming, and a trench coat with the same pockets as the clyde pants!
I tend to layer my lighter weight pieces into fall and winter. However winter pieces in summer doesn’t work so well! I’ve already pulled out my denim jacket and my ES wool Jane Kimono.
I have to say I haven’t gotten as much wear out of my Harper tunic as I would have liked. It will probably remain warm enough that I can keep it in rotation through October. Maybe I’ll layer a long sleeved shirt underneath. I think the problem is I haven’t found a way to style it to wear to work. All of my other ES pieces have been in heavy rotation this summer!
I used to be more firm about the seasonality of fabrics, but since moving to Newport Beach I no longer follow those rules. It’s pretty much summer here year-round. I don’t have much use for my winter sweaters, tights or fall clothes anymore!
I love the outfit! So hip and chic! Have a great day!
the harper tunic is sort of hard to style – for me. it’s rather limited to wearing with jeans. i could wear it with leggings, but i don’t wear leggings in the summer, and honestly, i don’t like it much on me with a slim layer underneath. if i would layer it more, i think it would be “easier” to wear through fall, but i probably won’t.
does wearing it with your cecilia pants “dress” it up a bit? it’s sort of hard to dress up linen, or make it work appropriate i would think…
I have to say that linen is the one fabric I really feel seasonal about…and don’t feel like it layers well with winter clothes and shoes. That said, it could still be warm enough for linen and sandals here for another few weeks, so that line is arbitrary in Northern California. 😉 But I still don’t like the look of my linen dresses with suede boots, for example. In general, I have a pretty mono-season wardrobe, and very few things really get switched out “off season.” I miss that sometimes–switching out your clothes and you have a whole other wardrobe you’d forgotten about!
Yeah, jeans is about all I’ve worn it with. Good thought about the cecilia pants. I’ll try that. My work place isn’t terribly formal but jeans and the tunic seem a little too casual. 🙂
I put all my linen away in winter. I think it’s a psychological thing that I don’t want to give up: linen keeps me cool, so I won’t try to layer it or transition it to winter. That way, when summer comes and I pull out my linen I instantly feel nice and cool, even if it is majorly in my head, you know? Linen is my absolute favorite fabric so my linen clothes get enough wear in summer. It’s almost all I wear. All my cotton and silk tops remain neglected on the bottom of the pile, so now with the seasons changing I have a good reason to wear my other stuff.
I sometimes use heavier linen as a base layer under sweaters in winter. I think it works well – similar to silk it helps me stay warm without getting sweaty.
Grechen, didn’t you post a pic of you wearing your Harper with a skirt? Maybe the JP ruched skirt? I thought that looked amazing – and I remember being inspired to consider ordering a Harper after seeing that. I didn’t, but I’ll probably consider it again next year.
I have very few linen pieces, and most of what I do have are knits that look relatively seasonless. I agree that linen screams summer but I think you could stretch the season for black linen – more than you could a light color like white or ivory/flax.
haha..yes, i did wear the harper tunic with my JP ruched skirt – an outfit that was promptly featured on the internet’s premier fashion blogger bashing site as a “worst” fashion blogger outfit LOL
you’re right about black linen being more versatile. most of mine is so oversized though, it doesn’t layer well.
excellent point!
Linen – I started putting it away this past weekend. Same with certain colors (I don’t wear pastels, really, but the “sorbets” go away) And I will never be that woman effortlessly transitioning her white jeans into autumn…..(I finally gave in and bought some last year but my issues still remain so they’re not worn often – by the time it’s “summer” in NC, it’s too freaking hot for denim – even ankle length!) Anyway, I’ll be wearing sleeveless & sandals for another month, I’m sure, but dark colors mostly. Maybe I’ll be ready for cashmere in January 😉
ES Cold Collection is online! (and my order has been placed…)
What did you order??? Ugh. I waited all day but had an appointment this afternoon so I’ll have to look on my phone.
Astral Crossover Top in Silk Crepe – Black
Eva Top in Raw Silk Broadcloth – Black (I should really expand my color palette, I know)
I ordered the Eva sweater last year and it was a little too itchy for me. I tried on the Eva sweater dress at a sample sale but just didn’t think it would get that much wear. I’m hoping third time’s a charm with Eva!
I’ve had the website open all day and been refreshing periodically. Fangirl much?
Agreed on the itchiness of the Eva sweater from last year, but I love the shape so I’m tempted by this new version! (And am looking at placing an order identical to yours, Laurie!)
I do wear my Eva sweater but not as much as I should – a cami underneath helps, but last year’s fabric wasn’t a great choice for such a high-neck top, IMO. Looks like ES has been tweaking and refining and learning from past hits and misses – one of the things I love about that company.
A thought about that Astral top – it looks like it could be a nice alternative to the Marlena tank, which I think would have been too low-cut for me even with the V in the back. (My bras are pretty full-coverage, by necessity.) There’s nothing very “cold weather” about the Astral top, but it interests me anyway. And I’m a sucker for anything that references Astral Weeks, which is also one of my all-time favorite albums 🙂
I’m from Northern California too, and I know what you mean about a “mono-season” wardrobe. Most of my clothes can be worn all year round, but for a few winter and summer pieces. Makes things easier, but not quite as season- defining without wardrobe switches. One becomes a master of layering!
Gee, I thought that outfit was cool!
Have been shopping with ES since she would actually personalize fits, styles and colours. LOVE the cuts this season and it’s amazing how beautifully absolutely everything works with absolutely everything else but, got to say it, where are the pops of colour? There are only so many simple cuts in base colours one can usefully wear and I think I already have my share. I am eyeing a couple of dresses, but a bit nervous about the “itchy wool” comments. Maybe I should wait for some reviews!
I was hoping for some color also. There were some lovely shades in seasons past, but I did not know about ES then. Too bad for me.
Linen is a Spring/Summer fabric for me. But white jeans are a Winter must for that sexy cashmere sweater/jeans look. Suede bootiessuede and shoes are pulled back out, although, what does one do with MZM-like suede slides??? I love the look, but major confusion: Slide says Summer but suede says Winter/Fall!
I’ve been stalking the ES site too. Love her raw silks so quite thrilled that she’s using it quite a bit in the new season offerings. Still deciding but I think I’ll be going for the Harper dress in black raw silk.
Hi Kathryn – ES is working with a brand-new type of wool this year (she writes about it on the blog on the site) so any comments about last year’s fabrics and styles don’t apply to the new collection.
The new wool pieces are too pricey for me, but if that weren’t an issue, I wouldn’t hesitate to try them out. I’m looking forward to some reviews too 🙂
i have experience with imperial ranch wool from both emerson fry and zady and i found it to be rather non-itchy overall, but all of my pieces are a “chunky” woven style, and i think ES is doing felted? which i find to be very nice, actually, i love my inhabit felted wool cardigan and not itchy at all. FYI…
Thanks! I appreciate that info. Yes the new pieces are very pricey, but when I find something that is both elegant and a massive heat loss barrier, it is difficult to resist (eating or warmth……a bit of both?) 🙂
I mean thank you to both of you!!@!!!!
