Happy Thursday! Reader Elaine asked me to do a post on my favorite white t-shirts. This is not it, but it IS a sneak-peek.
A couple of years ago (wow, has it been that long?) I did an “essentials” post on white t-shirts. It’s not really all that outdated, my favorite white t-shirt is STILL the James Perse casual tee, but I have a few others to add and take away from my original list. More on that next week, but today, here’s a look at a good, less expensive alternative to the James Perse tee, although it’s really different enough to have (and love) both.
I have two of these Everlane u-neck tees and really like them (size medium). You can’t beat the $15 price tag for made in the US and I love the raglan sleeves and longer-in-the-back length. It is a thin tee, thinner than the James Perse, and since it has raglan sleeves, it’s quite a bit more casual and drapey. To be honest, I don’t like the way the sleeves stick out on the sides, but I don’t know how else a short-sleeve raglan tee would look…
Anyway, I’ll go more into detail on the differences and why I love each one, and more white tees next week. In the mean time, what’s your favorite white t-shirt?
No matter what you say about the sleeves, this t-shirt looks great on you.
And my favorite white t-shirt is none–I love the look of white tees on other people but not the way they look on me. So my favorite white t-shirt is a black one. 😉
Also–on a side note–I ordered a pair of Frame overalls on sale from Saks on a whim–and I think I really love them! It’s totally 1986 over here. 😉
oh, i love the t-shirt, and think it looks great, i just have little pet peeves here and there about things sticking out 😉
love your answer – i don’t know what it is about me and white tees. i have a friend who doesn’t do white at ALL. i just can’t get enough of white tops…
What Jen said. >>>> So my favorite white t-shirt is a black one.
I haven’t had a white tee or white button down probably in more than 20 years. Love them on others though and I often feel like I’m missing out on something.
The shirt looks great on you Grechen, including the sleeves.
now that you mention it, i don’t like the sleeves sticking out either.. I already have a inverted triangle shape so i can’t afford to put more emphasis on my shoulders! thanks for pointing that out. i wouldn’t have noticed until i bought it probably.
I LOVE white t-shirts! I basically stopped looking after the James Perse casual tee. However, now that I have received my fantastic Emerson Fry linen t-shirt, their linen v-neck in white is on my wish list. Such gorgeous fabric.
BTW, I am also in love with that MM6 tote. I want one!
Well my all-time fav white tee was a double-front, cap-sleeve, slightly nipped in a the waist number made by the now-defunct Harold’s clothier (aka Harold Powell). But alas, that fun came to an end.
I just got the James Perse casual tee on your recommendation & I do like, a lot, but it’s still a wee bit sheer (for work/school) as compared to my beloved Harold’s tee’s of yore. But for casual affairs & regular day to day – the JP casual tee is spot-on perfect. I do still have some Vince scoop-necks I really like (cut a lot like their Little Boy tee’s, but with a less Amish neckline), but these tee’s kinda misshapen permanently if you don’t hand-wash & lay it out just so.
oh!!! tell us more about the emerson fry shirt!!! is it amazing??
the MM6 tote is really cool, but doesn’t go easily on my shoulder. it’s sort of weird to carry that way, which is annoying sometimes, so i carry it mostly when i don’t have much to carry…
haha at amish neckline…that’s why i don’t have any of the vince boyshirts – i did have one many years ago, and liked the feel of it, but the neckline was SO HIGH and confining.
again. why don’t you have a blog so you can share outfit pictures?? i’m dying to see your wardrobe 😉
ha ha ha…we’ll see.
btw, I have a new t-shirt source you should research–kitandace.com
It was started by the son of the Lululemon founder and his wife who were looking for clothes that performed like athletic wear but were more like street wear. I just ordered this tee and love it….

It’s a cotton cashmere blend, and so soft and perfectly drapey. I’d also say the sizing is generous, at least on this style–I’m a size 12 / L and the 10 was roomy. I will definitely be ordering more from them.
i LOVE kit & ace. they were/are thinking of opening a store in austin and were talking to a friend about running it…she’s running rag & bone here instead, but the company is interesting. and i am a BIG fan of “technical” gear for everyday, especially for traveling. that tee is awesome. like this dress too, obviously 🙂 http://shop.kitandace.com/SULLIVAN-DRESS – but i’m so wary of not being able to try in person.
oh, and i may have just ordered these Black crane culottes. oops.
Yes, the Emerson Fry shirt is amazing. I am so impressed by my whole EF experience. I was hesitant to order anything because fit is such a mystery with an online-only shop. Their customer service people set me at ease and made me feel welcome asking fit questions. They gave me their best recommendation, but made sure I knew I could exchange for a different size if I was the fit was off.
When the shirt arrived, the packaging was incredibly lovely, and included a little lavender sachet. Made me feel special!
The Storm Cloud Linen T is incredible. Very high quality linen with a nice, drapey weight while still being a bit sheer. It has a lovely sheen and a loose fit. The “storm cloud” wash gives the shirt a bit of an edge, which is fun considering how unexpectedly dressy the shirt seems. I was expecting a lazy Saturday shirt, but I might end up by saving this for a night out. They sent me a size small, which is my ‘normal’ shirt size. Fits perfectly, doesn’t catch on my love handles, the sleeves are long enough that they cover up the thicker part of my arms, and it is long enough that I can tuck it in if I want. I can see why some might want to size up and make it even slouchier, but it suits me just the way it is.
I’ve gotten over my fear of the unknown with EF, and am really looking forward to saving up to try another piece, even if it means adjusting my clothing strategy to add fewer pieces from a better shop. By far the most comfortable customer service experience I’ve had in a long time. Yay! Thanks for making this possible, Grechen.
Cute tee, Jen! I’d love to try one of these, but what’s up with companies deciding a size 10 is LARGE?!? Not in America, anyway.
Oh, so well-put, Jane! I love all things Vince….except for the little boy tee. What’s up with that, anyway? I’m still fond of my J Crew Vintage Cotton v-neck tee. I’ve had great luck with them holding up in the washer (and dryer, which for me is really unusual!). But I’ve gone the way of grey tees over white for some reason. And grey isn’t even flattering on me! 🙂
I love this tee on you, plus the retrospective pics from 2 and 1/2 yrs ago. You looked cute/chic before, but this new ‘do” and look is hot/chic!
