Valentino Rockstud crosssbody bag | purchased with credits I earn in partnership with Forzieri
I’ve worn this James Perse jacket nearly every day since I got it for my birthday. It’s that good. And here I thought I wasn’t a jacket person. To be honest, I’m still feeling out this “new” body of mine, and I don’t always know how to dress it. Lately, I’ve been wanting to cover it more – I still find my hips/saddlebags VERY frustrating – but since I got this jacket, I’ve been experimenting with showing my waist/body a bit more, and I might actually like it. We should all show off our bodies a little more, I think…
A few other random notes on this Friday:
I got the Valentino bag a while ago with credits I earn from Forzieri, but I didn’t start trying to carry it until a few days ago. I LOVE it, and thought it would be great for traveling (I love a smaller crossbody for travel), but it’s not ideal for every day. It’s pretty small for daily use – for me anyway – and sort of a pain if you get in and out of the car a lot, which is what I do when I’m out running errands or whatever. It would be great for city walking, etc., though, if you’re so inclined.
Of course I ordered the new wool chunky knit cardigan from Everlane, in Ivory, no less. I don’t have a white/ivory sweater, and thought I might like to add one to my wardrobe, and you know how big an Everlane fan I am. I got the sweater last night, and my first impression through the plastic was that it was cheap looking. I think that’s just the ivory color, honestly, but I couldn’t shake that. Then I tried it on, and it was just okay. It didn’t fit me very well (I got a medium) – it was big up top and sort of tapered in at the hips, because you know, I have hips.
I did like that it was heavy, and warm, but the fit was off. I was tempted to try the chunky knit raglan sleeve pullover, but I don’t normally like an open neckline like that for winter. I am a big fan of the wool; it was soft and cozy, but finding a style that fits my body might be a challenge. So I think I’ll pass for now. Did anyone get any Everlane chunky knit pieces? What did you think?
Also, you’re probably aware that Sephora F&F started yesterday if you’re a VIB. I’ve been waiting for this, and saving up my “discretionary” money. But as you also probably know, $75 at Sephora doesn’t get you much…even with 20% off! I went in yesterday and got only exactly what I needed, and came in under budget:

I only bought the Julep nail treatment (it’s pretty much all I wear on my nails lately), FormulaX cuticle eraser and Living Proof leave-in conditioner. I was DYING to buy the Marc Jacobs nail polish (you can see a sample of it on my thumb in the picture above!), but didn’t. I also got a sample of the CoverFX calming primer to see if that will help with my redness.
After reading the reviews on the Living Proof conditioner, I think I’ll take it back. I need a new conditioner, and like a leave-in as long as it doesn’t weigh my hair down, but I’m not sure I NEED a leave-in. I have such a problem with fly aways that I thought this might help. Has anyone tried it? I think I’d rather try Alterna, since it seems to be highly recommended…
Also, if you have any points, I LIVE for the Origins Ginzing eye cream, and it’s a 100-point perk this month. I had 300 points so I convinced the SA to give me three samples. They last FOREVER, so I can continue to be cheap and not buy the full-size version (the samples always end up as perks whenever I need them!).
What are you buying at Sephora? Any recommendations?
Oh! I ordered the Warby Parker Webb glasses this week. Dark won out! I went back to try both pairs on again, and the crystal just didn’t do anything for me this time. And they do have a very specific look – like I would love them with my harem pants, or anything sort of artsy-chic, but not with my Hope Trousers, for example. Thanks so much for all your input, it helped a lot!
Have a great weekend! happy friday π
I honestly don’t understand how Everlane can call themselves a luxury brand. Their quality is mediocre at best. Pretty much every piece I’ve ordered had quality issues. I made lots of returns due to quality/fit, and they eventually closed my account. But the point is, their tees, for example, don’t even come close to James Perse quality. Pretty much everything stretches out of shape, too. Anyway, just my personal gripe about them. My absolute fave piece was the Essential Scarf, which they discontinued, unfortunately.
By the way, those Vince sneakers on Nordstrom Rack are cheaper now. Just sayin’. π
Ok, I ordered the Everlane grey turtleneck and got it yesterday–here are my thoughts:
I was REALLY impressed with the knit and quality, and thought it was as nice or nicer than some Vince sweaters I recently tried on. Honestly, it’s the first sweater from Everlane (I haven’t tried the cashmere) that I thought was great. Maybe because it was grey instead of the white. The knit was a beautiful weight and super-soft.
I thought the styling on this was really spot-on for the turtleneck–the high-low hem was perfect, and the sleeves had a little extra so they were almost cap sleeves, which I thought was flattering. It would also look great layered with a long-sleeved shirt.
I will probably not keep it though because I just don’t think turtlenecks are my best look, as much as I want to wear them.
I’ve been waiting for your take on the chunky wool! I’m sad the cardigan fits big in the top and small at the waist. Those types of reversals absolutely don’t work for my shape.
I had been thinking about the chunky turtle neck. My upper body is quite slim and sleeveless tends to flatter me really well. But the armholes look gigantic again and I hate purchasing sleeveless items I’m forced to wear a shirt under. I already have to do that for my silk sleeveless (which means I wear it far less than I would like).
I like Everlane’s aesthetic, and the basic tees are great, but I’m starting to get really bored with products that simply don’t flatter hourglasses. And prices that don’t necessarily match my quality expectations.
they definitely cater more towards “straight” body types, that’s for sure.
i’m with you on armholes!! i don’t like to have to work so hard to wear an item of clothing. it’s a sure sign that i won’t wear it much either…
i was also impressed by the quality – just that ivory color looked cheap, like an acrylic blend you’d buy from forever21. not good at all…
how would the turtleneck style work on me? is it narrower at the bottom? i wondered if it would be too long. i do love the idea of layering it over a long sleeve top though, and i ALWAYS love a good turtleneck π
You definitely have me interested in James Perse, it seems like the clothing is much nicer quality and very flattering. That jacket is super cute on you. I’m going to have to track some down I can try on π
i agree with you on the basic t-shirts, although i do like the u-neck tee…and they’re pretty good in general for $15. i mean…i’m not expecting them to be just like JP. i have been very impressed with my ryan tanks though, as long as I don’t dry them. i wear them constantly, and they’ve held up nicely. never losing their shape, or showing signs of wear at all.
i like the cashmere also; it’s not inhabit, or JP, but again, i’m not expecting that. it’s just nice, simple & easy cashmere. it takes some breaking in, i guess, but overall i’ve found it to be pretty good for the price.
i love the essential scarf also. i have one, and carry it with me in my bag most of the time. just in case π
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Everlane cardigan! I had my eye on that (in grey) but will probably pass, especially since I don’t need to spend that much on a cardigan that may or may not live up to its price. I have to say, I read rave reviews about Everlane from so many people but it just hasn’t worked out for me yet. I first heard of them a few years ago when my sister-in-law gave me a t-shirt for Christmas (I think it might be the u-neck? not sure). It’s extremely soft but not stylish enough for me to wear outside of the house, and the collar rolls and looks sloppy. My Ryan tank turned out to be defective (Everlane’s customer service is awesome though), and when I tried the other tank they have (forget what it’s called but it is cotton which is why I picked it) the silhouette was way too straight so tight on my hips and way too big up top. The silk tank quality looked okay, not great (some mild puckering around the seams), but the cut didn’t work on me (didn’t like how it curved in at the straps). That is the extent of what I’ve tried, but none of them have earned more than a “meh” from me. I’m sad, because other people seem to love Everlane and their prices are okay. Anyway, enough rambling. π
I love this outfit on you Grechen! Burgundy/wine/oxblood is my favorite fall/winter color. π
Hey, I’m a Sephora VIB and I haven’t heard anything about an FF code! I guess I don’t pay enough attention.
I actually just bought the no frizz leave-in again last week (via the Living Proof site) because I used to use it and liked it and thought I’d try it again. I find it works best on very clean hair. When it works it makes my fine wavy hair the way I WISH it would be–slightly heavier and thicker and not frizzy at all, just the lovely natural waves I dream of but seldom manage to pull off. But I know they’re in there! It even works for rainy days. But you really have to have clean hair, or I do, and I don’t want to wash my hair every day, so it’s not the perfect solution for me. I also got a trial kit of all the Perfect Hair Day stuff, but haven’t tried it yet.
I like the Alterna Caviar CC cream and the Bamboo Kendi Oil Micromist for frizz and flyaways, but haven’t been impressed with anything else I’ve tried, like the Caviar Shampoo/Conditioner.
But our hair is SO different–you might find the Alterna stuff is prefect for you!
Gretchen, yesterday I received two Everlane chunky wool sweaters: the cardigan in grey and the sleeveless in ivory. I have to say that they are both stunning and incredibly soft. The cardigan works when you want to snuggle into on the sofa with a book or over a blouse and pant for work. The cut an proportion are perfect (I am normally a size 8/medium) and true to size, albeit a bit oversized – I ordered a medium. If you want it more fitted, you could go down a size but I prefer these sweaters to be a bit larger.
The sleeveless is equally soft and the details make it more than just a sweater. It’s a little longer in the back, and the sides are woven on the diagonal for a flattering fit. A cozy sweater with no sleeves. I have to say it makes perfect sense to me. I love not having the bulk of the sleeves when I wear jackets over, and because I am pre-menopausal, being able to cool off quick is appealing. Plus I think a little flash of the unexpected skin – even if it is arms – makes this sexy. The Ivory looks and feels lux.
I own many Everlane pieces and have to say that I have not had any issues with quality. Their silk pieces are the work horses for my work wardrobe and the Petra Tote and wallet get used every day and still look amazing.
I love Kevin Murphy hair care products and recommend the hydrating shampoo and rinse – hydrate but doesn’t weigh my hair down.
Happy Friday!
I love this comfy look Grechen! I’ve really got to check out James Perse because I love everything you wear if his. Also, that bag… LOVE.
AshleyΒ΄s last blog post ..Basics With a Smidge of Plaid & Watcha Wearing Wednesday
It’s a pretty straight cut and doesn’t narrow at the bottom. In terms of length, I just packed mine up to mail it back or I would have given you the length measurements. π
i think if you’re a VIB you can just use code GIFTVIB at checkout for 20% off…
thanks for your input! i’m going to just stick with my fekkai. i don’t know why i wanted to try something different, i like it just fine!
I ordered Everlane’s Chunky Knit Cardigan in grey and it came this week. I ordered a large because I’ve been eyeing some oversized cardigans, and this one is definitely oversized. It’s more like a sweater coat, so I’ll have to wait until it’s colder to wear it. I’ve debated washing it to see if it shrinks a little. The color and quality seems fine to me, but I don’t have much experience with wool.
I live in Everlane’s V-neck tees, but I have noticed that some colorways have a different style fabric without as much give. My favorite is the navy tee, and I have three t-shirts in that color. It’s become my uniform.
Everlane silk is better than any luxury brand. I put them in the washing machine in cold and hang dry and steam the wrinkles. I wear the round collar shirts at work.
I like the v-neck t-shirts. They are super soft and comfy.
I got two inhabit cashmere t-shirt and honestly it is the same as uniqlo maybe scratchier. Not impressed.
I bought the chunky cardigan in grey and it looks great. I like the wool because it’s still soft and doesn’t look like it will pill. I’m tall and fairly straight so I like the way it falls but I could see where it might not work as well on some body types. I had purchased a black Wilfred Free cardigan in a similar style for more money and was disappointed with that. This one is great… not as great as the inhabit shawl collar cashmere but still a good option.
I just got the grey Everlane cardigan in the mail (it arrived today), and I am still thinking about the fit. I got a medium, and it feels a little big up top, but I think it’s supposed to be slouchy on the shoulders… The wool quality looks good (I do a lot of knitting and think about wool a lot), and it’s a heavy piece, heavier than I was expecting. It looks so light and drapey on the model, but it’s not quite what I expected. I should wear it for a few days and then decide whether to keep it or not…
That, and the cardigan, both in gray, were the pieces I liked, and I would definitely layer over a long-sleeved tee. You may convince me, YET, all you Everlane lovers!
LOVE Kevin Murphy hair products! That’s all my stylist used before we moved…:-(
I got very little from Sephora: Dior Lipglow because several of you raved about it (I like it, but I wouldn’t marry it. π ) and Living Proof Mousse, which I’ve read good things about (I’ll let you know after I try it. I’ve been losing GOBS of hair since my back surgery and feel a bit panicked. I’m telling myself it’s only temporary! Fingers crossed!)

And that outfit is SO “Grechen”! I love the jacket on you and it seems like it will work its way easily into your wardrobe.
I bought the chunky knit cardigan in navy blue, but it didn’t flatter me so I sent it back. Seemed a little big in the shoulders and top. It was heavier (in weight) than I expected and probably would’ve been really cozy, but it made me look schlumpy : (
that’s what i thought too…sort of big on top and narrow at the bottom. but i did love the weight of the wool!!
