Jumpsuits, overalls, rompers, etc. are EVERYWHERE now after making a serious comeback a couple of years ago. I have proclaimed my love/hate for jumpsuits many times, and lamented the myriad bathroom struggles, but now, I’m firmly in the “love” camp.
I have the following one-piece jumpsuits/overalls/rompers:
- This one – Ilana Kohn, in 100% cotton
- Ozma cypress romper in raw silk (outfit)
- Black Crane painter black jumpsuit in linen (outfit)
- Sundry black tank jumpsuit with elastic waistband (100% cotton) – few years old
- Eileen Fisher organic linen overalls (outfit)
I have probably worn the Ozma raw silk romper more than any other, mostly because it’s the thing I tend to throw on at home in the evenings. It is incredibly comfortable to wear and lounge around in, and feels good when it’s hot outside, but cool inside. I wear the Eileen Fisher pair a lot too, in fact I pretty much lived in them last weekend at my mom’s because they’re easy to layer over a long sleeve, or whatever, for some warmth in air conditioning.
The Black Crane jumpsuit is my least favorite, and I wanted to try and sell it, but it’s got awful pit stains from my homemade coconut oil deodorant a couple summers ago. I don’t hate it, I appreciate the feel of it, and how easy it is to wear, but it’s quite overwhelming on me, and harder to get in and out of for the bathroom.
This new pair of coveralls by Ilana Kohn was something I’d had my eye on for a while, but was never really ready to buy; I was worried that the denim/cotton would be too heavy for summer, and that it would be a real pain to use the bathroom in. I basically used every tactic I could to convince myself I didn’t WANT these and I would never wear them. But I do wear them. And I love them!!
I wore this outfit yesterday all day and it got up into the mid 90’s here. The denim is NOT heavy at all, in fact is pretty lightweight, and so so soft. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time outside, but even going in and out in that heat is pretty draining. I didn’t feel too hot or uncomfortable at any time, even playing with Dagny for a little while outside. The pockets are wonderful, and come in very handy while I’m working at home: holding tape, phone, lens cap, etc. AND it’s not a big deal getting out of to use the bathroom.
Actually that’s become much less of an issue over time than it used to be. I mean, yeah, it’s great if you have a dress on and you can just hike the bottom up and get on with it, but is it seriously that big of a pain to work a little harder for some relief?? No, not so much. Yeah, it’s more of a problem if you’ve got a cardigan or a pullover on top of the jumpsuit and you have to remove it, then find a place to put it, but I try to avoid that situation…
Next on my jumpsuit wishlist is one by Horses Atelier – I’m looking for something a bit more slim and straight with a defined waist; more fitted and less big I guess. In general I’m trying to move my wardrobe in that direction. But more on that tomorrow 🙂
What are your feelings on jumpsuits? Do you have any? What’s your favorite? Not a jumpsuit convert yet??
Nope. Primarily because so few are work appropriate (when a simple tank maxi dress IS, and is therefore my preference for easy summer dressing). Also, I love water and drink around a gallon a day so NO WAY on all those bathroom breaks….. I keep looking at some of the “fun, weekend” options until I remember that most of my weekends are spent working in the garden, so….Just not a good fit for my current life.
Very cute! I love overalls, jumpsuits, etc. I have a long sleeve light weight coverall that I wear spring, fall and winter with a T-shirt or turtleneck, and I have an ace and jig one piece (my husband calls it my teletubby outfit) that is ridiculously comfortable in the summer because I can stand anything touching my waist in this miserable heat and humidity. If I could ever shed some of my mid-section, I would move more toward something with a little shape; was back in Texas for a graduation and saw a picture of myself and was kind of shocked at how much I looked like a short potato stack! I’m finding that my love for long, oversized, or rather shapeless silhouettes isn’t doing me any favors. I’m all for dressing for myself, yet am having a bit of a crisis because I really don’t want to walk around looking like sh*t, if you know what I mean.
I’ve got the black crane jumpsuit too and I love/hate it. I feel like it looks best worn belted, but there, that’s another step for bathrooming. And the linen is lighter than what they use for their carpenter pants, which was disappointing. And it IS kind if hard to get in and out of. I’ve thought about selling mine this year…
I like ones that zip or button up. Then the waist can be more defined without having to belt it in.
You look adorable in this IK one. I saw it all over Instagram and have to admit, it’s hard not to be attracted to it!
I WANT a jumpsuit but haven’t been able to find anything that really fits so far. I had bought those same Eileen Fisher overalls but ended up returning because I felt too much like a toddler in them for some reason.
I have a couple of Ilana Kohn jumpsuits coming tomorrow to try…both are in the summery linen fabric. I tried on the Ilana Kohn “Gary” jumpsuit a few months ago but the large “just” fit, and I really need an XL.
I also like the look of this jumpsuit, but can’t get sizing on the 3 to see if it might fit…don’t want to buy on final sale without some more sizing details!

Jumpsuits are a real issue for me because I run a shop and have to be in and out of the bathroom in under a minute or people start ringing the “help” bell furiously or asking where I am loudly to themselves. Not worth the trouble at this point in my life. But I do LOVE the coverall trend.
I love the denim one! I probably wouldn’t wear a denim jumpsuit, because I just don’t really like to wear denim anything except jeans, and lately I’m not too fond of jeans. But I really like the cut and style of that one, it looks great.
I used to think jumpsuits were so dumb…but I thought a lot of things were dumb, and I’ve changed my mind/stopped caring as I’ve gotten older, so now I am totally on board with jumpsuits. I’ve been afraid to try them for the fact that I’m very hippy/bottom heavy, and I don’t think most of them would work on me (same goes for dresses, fitting a dress can be a nightmare). However I was determined to find a jumpsuit for my sister’s wedding, and I actually found a really great one in a black stretchy poly that looks and feels fabulous. So that will be my first foray into jumpsuits. I can’t wear it to work (it’s definitely a cocktail look) but I’m hoping to find more jumpsuits in a similar fabric or cut that might be more forgiving of my top/bottom discrepancy.
I have an Ozma jumpsuit in black cotton gauze that I got at a sample sale in SF last year, and an Only Child Linen jumpsuit that I basically bought because it was only $50 through Insta. I love/don’t love both for different reasons — the Ozma one is 100% work appropriate with a belt and a denim jacket for me, and it’s so, so great and flattering when I have the waist cinched, but the gauze stretches out at least two full sizes (like S to L in a matter of hours), which really limits its versatility. I paid $80 for it at the sample sale, but am having a hard time justifying buying the same style in a different fabric due to price (like raw silk or denim) although a little voice in the back of my head makes me think it might be a good idea!
Love the OC one because it’s linen, but the torso is too short and the neckline is a high-V, and I really can’t think of who the neckline would be flattering on… it’s a little weirdly conservative for me. But linen + pockets are nice. I’m eyeing an ES Clyde Jumpsuit as my “holy grail” or maybe even the Mara but have yet to take the plunge… mostly due to wait times and talking myself out of them when posted on STES because of $$!
You know I love the EF jumpsuit. I live in it on the weekends. And I just deel with going to the restroom. Not a big deal.
My other favorite is this Not Perfect Linen one in redwood that is a go-to for dinners out etc…

My friend Stacie at Amae also makes this romper that I just got last week in black and have worn 3x already! I love the weight of it and that I can leave the tie off for a baggy look ot tie it for a more dressy/work appropriate look. I may need the white one too!

Nope, nope, none, and no way. I still have PTSD from the baby blue, poly-blend, romper gym suits we had to wear in middle school. (The boys got to wear reversible navy and grey cotton t-shirts and heavy cotton shorts. So unfair!)
I have a long torso and even the cutest jump suit will never suit me.
I am also feeling the love, but haven’t bought one yet. Still trying to decide what I want. I would say my favorite options from what I’ve seen so far are:
Wrap Jumpsuit from Vetta (from Relaxed Capsule)
The EF one you posted
Reifhaus Lou Jumpsuit
ES Mara Jumpsuit
I’m working on what I want in terms of silhouette right now, too. I feel like I spend a lot of effort trying to fix my wardrobe as if it could be stationary thing – as if my taste and body and life could be a stationary thing. Square peg, round hole. But it’s still fun if you don’t take it too seriously. 🙂
What about the ulla Johnson overalls? If you’re done with/over those, I’ve been stalking eBay and Poshmark for ages to no avail 😉
I’m a jumpsuit fan and strongly feel my past belief that short/curvy can’t pull it off was 100% wrong. I have the following: Only Child Vista in black linen, Eileen Fisher crewneck/cap sleeve in jersey, spaghetti strap harem jersey version from a random Amazon seller and a strappy crepe one from Thailand (no brand) that I bought at a local boutique. I also recently bought a shorts version recently in mustard linen made by a local Hawaii line At Dawn, which I would say her line is heavily inspired by Black Crane. That one comes with a sash but looks good with or without. I am waiting on my order of an Elizabeth Suzann Mara in silk crepe (hope it fits!).
I also have the Only Child Calivintage denim jumpsuit but have never worn it. I may send it to you for a possible Slowre item in addition to some EF, Everlane and other Only Child items that didn’t work for me.
I love this Kohn version on you (pockets are probably really handy). I am always eyeing her pieces but have held back on ordering as the chest measurements always seem too small for me and if I order up it may get too large.
Ugh I totally know what you mean by your last comment…a few years back I wore an Emerson Fry caftan that I thought looked great but in the pictures I looked just awful. I promptly resold it after that. I carry weight in my midsection and finding things that are loose but not too loose is a challenge!
YES to this. YES YES YES. i’m having the same crisis right now. hence all the purging and buying.
on the one hand, i don’t want to care. but I also want to LOOK GOOD, you know? or as good as i can LOL
which is why i’m trying to move more towards things that fit my body. i had been buying pants, jeans, etc., that were just too big, and didn’t do my short legs any favors. i think there’s a happy medium. waist definition is important for me, as i’ve come to notice. but i’m like you, i don’t like anything touching my waist when it’s this hot. touching my body at all, really, but i’ve also figured out that when it’s hot as hell outside, i’m going to be HOT no matter what i’m wearing, so why not look cute too? 😉
yes, that’s a good point about work appropriateness.
i drink an amazing amount of water too, and i’m getting used to disrobing for the bathroom. it’s all a matter of priorities LOLOL
yes, i will admit i fell for it after seeing a bunch of ilana’s pictures on instagram wearing it 🙂
also i’ve been following a reader on instagram for a very long time and she just got one, and looked SO cute in hers…
i can’t even wear the black crane not belted, it’s way too long and looks horrible on me 🙁
haha. i very often feel like a toddler in my EF overalls too …i almost decided to get rid of them, but they’re so freaking comfortable, and really useful, so i kept them. i find that if i wear ALL BLACK with them, i look less like a 2 year old LOL
i want to hear your thoughts on your ilana kohn jumpsuits! i struggled with deciding which one to get, but ultimately wanted one that was four season instead of a sleeveless one .
love that no6 one too!! but just say no to final sale 🙂 although there’s always slowre haha…
ha. yes, that would be a problem. i am slow to button up LOL, and sometimes i forget one or two!
oh, i’m glad you found one to work for you! maybe a reader or two will have a suggestion for you for more 🙂
I bought this same Tuck coverall about six weeks ago and just love it. I call it my “Rosie the Riveter” look. It’s so much fun, not to mention comfortable. I did end up shortening the pant leg a little bit, so that I wouldn’t have to roll up the bottoms. I find that it looks great not only with sandals but also with booties, sneakers, and even pumps.
love both of those jumpsuits!!! i got a black kimono- style linen jumpsuit in for slowre recently and i’m toying with keeping it for myself – it fits much more slim than any of my other ones and i could see it being nice for dinners or maybe our charleston vacation in august!
i too would love a white jumpsuit. or a white dress. white is intriguing to me and i love the look. i wish my frazier & wing dress in white still fit 🙁
those were way too big on me, and i sold them a while ago, sorry 🙁
i found these recently though and really considered getting them, they’re nearly identical to the UJ ones…
https://birdbrooklyn.com/women/jumpsuits/welder-denim-overall.html?color=blue – i mean, they’re basically the same
yes, i remember you have those!! i might need to shorten the leg a little too, although i did that with my UJ overalls, and i wasn’t totally happy with them afterwards, i missed the roll!!
I also recently ordered and returned this Ace & Jig jumpsuit (plus another dress):
https://shop.aceandjig.com/collections/one-pieces/products/alley-jumper-voyage
It fit, and the fabric was lovely, but it just felt meh on me…maybe over the art teacher line? Same with the dress. I love the fabrics that Ace & Jig makes, but the styles never quite suit me.
I have been buying and returning a TON of stuff lately, hoping to hit on something that works soon….even the shoes I just bought I loved but were too big. 🙁
I’ve talked about how much I love the Clyde jumpsuit here a zillion times but it basically IS the jumpsuit holy grail as far as I’m concerned.
Jumpsuits are one of those items that I really love, really want and they really do t fit me well…AT ALL! Especially now that I’m a bit larger, and I’m very long wasted the potential to look like a pillow cinched tightly around the middle with a wedgie is too much to get past.
Thanks for the tip! Seems silly to have items that “got away” but for me those UJ ones were so dreamy! Who knows if they even would have fit me but Maybe I’ll try these!
Oh boy I’ve had some major trials and errors with jumpsuits the past year. I had the black crane ‘gathered jumpsuit’ in peacock and the Ilana Kohn gary jumpsuit in a dark denim last summer. The black crane jumpsuit was beautiful and I really wanted to keep it but the gathered material along the back shoulders was constantly pulling the front part of the jumpsuit up as I moved around. I can’t deal with clothes that I have to be constantly making adjustments. I was sad to sell it because I did love the way it looked but I couldn’t stand wearing it for long either so in the end, comfort wins. The gary jumpsuit was bought a size too big but at the same time, I couldn’t fit the top part of jumpsuit over my butt to put it up and I am not even that wide in the hip area. So I had to buy one size larger just to put it on and thought it looked fine with the bust slightly big but once again, never felt completely comfortable in it so to another home it went.
My most recent acquisition is a rompler by Vlas Blomme, a japanese label that is based on linens and organic cotton and I think this one is a winner.
https://envoyofbelfast.com/collections/vlas-blomme/products/romper-suit-midnight-blue
It’s super baggy in a flattering way because the fabric is thin, super soft and flowy but not see through and slouches in all the right places. Pockets on the front and back and can be worn front or back.
After the experience and expenses of the previous ones not working out, I probably won’t invest in any more jumpsuits. It’s one of those items that is best to be admired from afar. Love your Tuck overalls, you pull them off so well.
Love jumpsuits! I have one by Uniqlo that I wore all the time to the office. It looks like a black blouse front tucked into slim pants – I always get compliments. It’s a stretchy material so it isn’t too hard to get in and out of it. I never thought I was the right shape for jumpsuits but with enough drape, I look pretty cool! Thinking of getting the OffOn Linen kimono jumpsuit or one from NotPerfectLinen next. The tough part is linen has less give and there’s a risk of buying one too oversized.
Hi, I’m thinking of investing in this jumpsuit (love a jumpsuit!) and was wondering how you found the sizing? I have more IK fitted jumpsuits in a Medium (I’m a 10/12) but have read that this runs big. Do you mind me asking what size you are and how you find the small?
Thank you
I was a 6 or so at that time and the small was plenty big on me. The tuck definitely runs big IMO. and the natural
Fabrics stretch quite a bit.
