I shaved my legs this morning so you better believe I’m not going to waste all that effort, so I’m wearing a dress today. But I just discovered quite a few screaming red welts from mosquito or other bug-bites on the backs of my legs that are just horrible looking. So maybe I’ll end up wearing pants today? Eh…I just can’t. It’s too muggy out for pants.
But can I just say I LOVE not wearing deodorant? The freedom that comes from just putting on clothes and not having to worry about getting deo stains on them? PRICELESS. This has been so life-changing for me. Yes, but the very end of the day I do have a certain “odor,” but it’s as natural for humans to have an odor as it is animals, and I’m going to sweat anyway, deo or not, so I choose not. I asked my husband if I smelled bad at the end of one day and he said no, so…
I do put a little schmidt’s on right before Pure Barre, but then I shower afterwards and wash it all off. Why didn’t I think of no-deodorant earlier? Deodorant stains are the BANE of my existence.
I got the idea to stop wearing deodorant from Doree during a Forever35 podcast – a good listen, BTW, and thanks Catherine for mentioning it, and just in an episode yesterday they were talking about not showering everyday. Now that, I’m not sure I can do. Mostly because I either do the Peloton or Pure Barre most days, and also because I enjoy it; the feeling of “cleaning up” and starting my day.
I might try though, one weekend day.
Do you shower everyday? Wear deodorant everyday?
I’m not 100% natural by any stretch of the imagination. I’m also a heavy sweater and I live in NC. I shower every morning, clinical strength antiperspirant, then I shower again at night (no hair wash) after exercising & gardening…
I love that dress. But sleeves! In my office I’d be fine but I think I’d die walking to my car. My favorite summer discovery – wicking jockey slipshorts!!! I wear sundresses most days from May – October and I love them!
you know, i don’t love sleeves when it’s really hot, but i’ve also come to terms with the fact that when it’s hot as hell out, i’m going to be hot, so i might as well wear what i like 🙂
today it’s only in the mid-80’s and i have to go to the mall (ugh) so sleeves are just right!!
We’re in our 3rd day of temps in the mid90s, with heat indices well over 100. But hey, we’re not having 100 year floods like parts of the midwest (or some of TX?) so I’ll call it a win?
I never wear deodorant. ?
I love this dress on you! I waver back and forth on wanting more dresses and convincing myself that I have too many. Sometimes I think I should give up the rest of my wardrobe and only wear dresses. But then jeans…
I shower most days because I shave my legs everyday (I might skip a day here and there in the winter). I don’t wear deodorant (just baking soda/cornstarch mixture brushed on) but I’ve been concerned over the last week of 90+ humid days that I should reconsider. But then the deodorant stains/marks…
Am very excited that my ES Mara jumpsuit is en route!
Depends on what I’m up to. These days I try to work out 5-7 days/week and since summer in my area is scorching, I wear deodorant daily (since I seem to sweat simply as a consequence of existing in the summer!) and shower after working out. When I lived in a more temperate climate I didn’t often wear deodorant unless I KNEW I would be sweating among other people (I don’t care enough to put it on for workouts as it’s just me!) — I LOVE not wearing deodorant, frankly! Putting it on makes me feel like I’m trying to mask some aspect of myself that’s perfectly natural. Shower-wise — if it’s not necessary, I’d shower every other day but between working out and it being hot, it’s a daily (sometimes 2x daily) occurrence. But I’m in CA where we’re always operating within a drought during summer…
I wear antiperspirant daily. I don’t use a natural or green product either (Invisible Dry Spray by Dove). I stayed away from sprays for a long time due to the affect on the environment but I have found this is really the most effective product for me. For my feet I do use the Crystal pump spray (I found if I clean my feet and spray them, my shoes last a lot longer).
I need to shower daily even if I didn’t work out (but I do work out quite a bit). It is also the most relaxing part of my day. I take super hot showers and find it very soothing. The areas that get sweaty during the day when I’m walking outside or in my non-AC’d apartment (underarms & unmentionable areas) will feel uncomfortable if I don’t shower. It is also part of my culture (Japanese) to bathe at night before getting into bed so no matter how tired I am it is rare that I will fall asleep without showering/brushing my teeth/washing my face. I will get up from the couch with eyes at half mast and go through that routine before getting into bed. I don’t take baths much though, mostly showers, but I love hot springs and hot tubs in spas. I will sometime take a shower in the morning if it was a humid night but that would be an additional shower to my evening routine.
Thank you for the tip on the slipshorts! I’m definitely checking those out.
So with my first ever comment I get to reveal my personal hygiene habits? Irresisitable! I shower every other day, sometimes only twice a week – unless it’s really hot, but as I live in the U.K. that doesn’t happen often. I feel totally comfortable with this, but I grew up without a shower, so I’ve always been used to not bathing every day. My husband is the same, uses only crystal deodorant and despite sweating free.y never has any odour – saying all of that, I actually like the smell of fresh sweat, and I agree it’s natural for us to have an odour, but I’m not confident of going without – especially as I don’t shower every day. I use a spray from Sukin, an Australian brand. I love it – I can sweat, but stay fresh and get no deodorant stains as it’s just essential oils in a water base.
Haha!! Yay 🙂
oh!! that seems faster than the projected wait time no? or has it already been that long lol
i can’t wait to hear what you think about the mara!!
I might be considered a pig pen here but I shower only two or three times a week. Eek! In the summer I might even consider an ocean swim and rinse off a shower. I do was my face, underarms, lady parts and surrounding area even morning with water.
I also stopped wearing deodorant after reading a comment on here. And you are so right LIFE CHANGING!
I do have this organic, basically alcohol and essential oil spray on that I might spritz on occasionally (like before I teach yoga) but I don’t notice a smell and I have a very sensitive nose. I also keep my underarms shaved. So thank you for giving me “permission” to not wear deodorant 🙂
New poster…decided to make my first comment, on of all things, deodorant. Here’s the deal, if you wash well and rinse well when bathing, why would you need deodorant? I have not used deodorant for 5 years about, and have had no problem with body odour. So…try it for maybe a week. If its not for you, it isn’t. But, I must say, I am doing better without deodorant than with. Keep in mind that most product use is about very good advertising. Anyone want to take on hair care? Just as bad as skincare. We should all scream in unison. That’s it for my first post. Oh, my.
love it!! and agree with you – skincare/makeup mostly marketing. but also what you’re comfortable with and feel good doing. I don’t begrudge anyone for doing what works for them or what feels good to them. i’m just happier now without deodorant. who knew??
i don’t wash my hair much either, and sometimes i’ll just wet it and not use shampoo. i can’t quite go without shampoo TOTALLY, but i might get there eventually 🙂
i have been thinking a lot about my hair lately actually. i’m just not really happy with it and sort of feel like just growing it for as long as i can and not coloring it anymore. problem is i think about that pretty frequently and chicken out after a couple of months LOL. and my hair is so straight, it doesn’t do well very long…
yay!! 🙂
what is this alcohol/essential oil spray you use?? something you buy or something you make?
It’s called erbaviva organic deodorant. I use jasmine and grapefruit scent.
I bought it from the grommet website when Schmidt’s stuff I was using started staining my white shirts and giving me bad ingrown hairs. Just don’t put it on right after you shave, it will sting like a mother fucker 😉
I have been using Donna Karan Antiperspirant for about 20 years now. I have tried to not wear any or use the natural deos but i just hate that wet feeling in my pits and on my clothes. I have never had pit stains from the Donna Karan product which is why I have stuck with it so long. Well worth the money and lasts a long time too.
I eat plant based whole foods, don’t drink alcohol and use vegan/natural cleansers and make up so I figure I can use an antiperspirant.
That dress is amazing on you!
thank you gloria!
and yes, you do you!!! whatever works…
ha. good to know . i would use it probably before pure barre? so not after shaving. just to absorb any errant odors for the barre LOL
I only put on deodorant if I’m attending a function and want to ensure I don’t end up with stink! Otherwise I let my pits breath and do their job. I’m currently reading Renagade Beauty, by Nadine Artemis. If you can get past her very flowery, new age-ish style of writing, it is a really informative book that has me rethinking all my personal hygiene; we mess our microbiome up with so much of what we are doing. Since it is so hot and humid in the summer, I rinse off in the shower everyday—but only wash my hair once or twice a week. It’s interesting that with age I have become so low maintenance!
I take once/twice a day shower. 2-3 minutes. I grew up in 2 very warm climates and cannot fathom going w/o a shower or deodorant. When I couldn’t afford or was out, then baking soda rubbed on my pits, eliminated odor albeit not sweat.
Being in close proximity to other humans, I can only attest to the fact that an individual often is oblivious to their own odor. Clean odor, is, of course, pleasurable. Add the bacteria and sweat and it becomes repelling. Workout clothes with their high techish fabrics, only accentuate bad odor…
Reading the above comments, I now see that I am a minority 🙁
I shower almost every day. The only times I don’t are in the winter if I’ve done nothing for the day or if I’m sick and don’t feel like showering. I don’t always wear deodorant in the winter because it’s not necessary, but I’m a super sweaty mess in the summer and need it daily. Any time the temp gets above 70 I sweat and I sweat PROFUSELY. I don’t mind not wearing it on the weekends if I’m running and will just jump in the shower afterwards, but weekdays are a different story.
I worry about drought too! But my showers are really quick, like, 5 minutes in, shampoo/wash/condition/rinse, out. I wish we’d been able to build in a water recovery system (to irrigate with the grey water) when we built our house, but it would not have been approved in our county at the time (2001).
My hair is super straight and fine also. I sorta said fuck it a while back and switched from shampoo to New Wash, quit coloring it, and started taking a plant based biotin type supplement. I was under a lot of stress at the time and felt like my hair was thinning as a result. I was able to grow it out for the first time ever and not totally battle with styling it. My greys appear like totally rando Santa Claus white hairs and not like a root line though so that made it a lot easier to stop coloring it.
Any chance you would share what supplement you’re taking. I’ve been taking BioSil to help my splitting nails but my doctor suggested biotin. (I’ve got thin hair as well).
Oh of course, I take Garden of Life My Kind Organics- Organic Plant Collagen Builder.
I am woefully behind on Forever 35, mostly because I can’t seem to integrate podcasts into my routine for some reason. :/ I have been unable to find a natural deodorant that really works for me, and I sweat fairly heavily, especially in the Texas summer. Also, I love a good, hot shower, and that’s where I shave my legs and wash my hair, so they run long. I wake up really early, before everyone else in my house, to take one and it’s part of my morning routine.
Grechen, I don’t really wear white t-shirts, but I’ve had good luck getting deodorant buildup out of other tees with BioKleen Bac-Out. It’s what I used when I was cloth diapering, and you pre-treat with it before you start a load of laundry. I’ve also tried washing things on the normal setting vs. delicate, and that makes a difference, too, especially in the summer.
Really into the Aesop spray deodorant. Wear the LaVanille sport deodorant for sweaty days. Also shower almost every day on the hottest days, less when it’s cooler. But I’m also a sweaty person. What a life it must be to not live this sweaty.
