Vince platform oxfords
I wore this to dinner on Saturday night. It was one of those outfits I imagined in my head while I was deciding what to wear, put it on, and didn’t think twice about whether to REALLY wear it or not.
You may remember many years ago I engaged in an “experiment” where I would chose an outfit and just WEAR it without second-guessing and spending too much time in the mirror. See, usually I do the opposite: I envision an outfit in my head, put it on, and inevitably while I’m standing in front of the mirror decide there’s something wrong with it, or it’s not the right thing, and take it off again. Sometimes I would do that 2-3 times before I leave the house. And on really bad days, I’d do that several more times and then decide not to leave the house at all.
Those days are really few and far between lately, but I do find myself over-analyzing outfits and thinking about what I SHOULD wear way more often than I’d like to. The beauty of my wardrobe as it is, is that I love everything in my closet, it all fits, and it all works well together, for the most part. I don’t HAVE to think very much about what to wear, I’ve already done the work in choosing what to add/remove from my wardrobe at the start.
But you know, sometimes emotion, weird body image issues, etc. get in the way, and all of that goes out the window.
Anyway, I liked this outfit, and was comfortable in it. I really like the pants, and the size 10 definitely fits better than the 8, but it’s still a style I’m not necessarily drawn to on my body. I think I’ll keep the pants this length also, but that just means they’re not going to be great for wearing in warmer weather or for wearing with flats. And I’m still trying to wear the leather jacket more often – it’s DEFINITELY out of my comfort zone – but I’m going to take it this week to my shoe place and see if they can remove the belt loops – the one in the back is really uncomfortable when I’m sitting.
I hope you had a great weekend! I didn’t make it to the Eileen Fisher store for their system event, but I’m going to go this week just to check out new arrivals, and will report back with my thoughts. I had to take advantage of the sun on Saturday to take pictures of new arrivals for SLOWRE (of which there are MANY, and VERY EXCITING!!), so I worked most of the weekend.
Just want to say that I love this outfit on you. You look great in those pants!
looking good!!!
i love this outfit! if i saw you out in public in this, i would definitely be thinking “oh man, that woman is COOL.”
also, every time you write about your struggle with your leather jacket, it’s funny to me because i am the exact opposite with mine! i got it in september, and i want to wear it ALL the time. i live in the northeast, and the last few months have required a Serious Winter Coat, but we’ve had several days in the 50s and 60s lately, and i have been absolutely thrilled to bring my leather jacket back out!!
Girl. This outfit is literally the coolest thing EVER! You look like a total badass. A classy badass, but a badass nonetheless!
Love this, bigtime!!! It practically SCREAMS “New Yorker”! All black is still one of my favorite uniforms. You just can’t go wrong. Definitely, remove the belt loops.
Hi Grechen-
Yes, this is a winner definetly, the proportions is what I like, the broad shoulders with the wide leg look awesome on you. Next time you imagine this outfit in your head , think, ‘Cool, classy badass, like Cathy said. I recently decided to get a teal blue moto jacket. I posted a pic on Instagram from this weekend from an Eileen store in Soho, NY. I havent had the joy factor with traditional black, but when I saw the teal, I thought, yes. Now my thing is my age, am I too old to wear one, do I look like I’m trying too hard? I change a lot too but mostly because something is making me too hot.
I didnt go back to the Eileen event either but I would like to know your thoughts on her spring arrivals.
I already said it on IG, but I LOVE this outfit on you! Even if you feel awkward, it LOOKS cool and effortless. 😉
I got the size 12 pants, and could not even come close to buttoning them, so back they went! They were plenty big in the hips / thighs, which is always my issue with pants–hard to find ones that will fit my short, wide waist without being humongous in the hips…
I ordered the Everlane pants in both the size 6 and 8. Although I’m almost always a size 6/28 in denim (occasionally a size 4/27), I was afraid the 6 might be on the small side since you had to size up to a 10. The 6 fit better overall but had some creasing around the crotch area. Do you get that too? Seems like you (and other reviewers) do based on your photos, even with the size 10. I wonder if that’s the case in other pants with this kind of silhouette or if it’s just Everlane.
yes, definitely have creasing in the crotch area, and it seems even some of the the models do. i think that’s a fit issue, and honestly, they shouldn’t do it if they were cut a little wider in the hips around where the pockets are. i think everlane’s pants generally are cut more straight and will fit women with slimmer hips/butt/thighs better overall. it’s just the way they’re cut. not sure about other pants, I tried the jesse kamm pants on and the size 8 definitely didn’t fit on me, and i’m not sure the 10 would have either; they seemed to have been cut even slimmer…
thank you jen 🙂
i think with everlane’s pants you have to have a magical combination of slim hips and waist – more of a boyish body type. or at least a “uniform” shape, no matter the size, if that makes sense. i can’t figure it out, only that they don’t do so well on my shape. these aren’t bad, in the size 10, but i still find it annoying that the pockets stick out and the creasing in the crotch bothers me a bit.
Hey!! Grechen you are looking really nice in this outfit it’s kind of giving a retro feel and even i really liked the pants i hope they look good on me too.
Great outfit, Grechen – love the pants on you!
