Hawk and I were playing yesterday and talking about body parts. We got to his belly button and I told him that’s where he was attached to me when he was inside my body. He looked at me for a second as if he understood (he didn’t…) and I nearly lost it.
It’s no secret I’ve been hard on myself about postpartum weight gain and how much my body has changed, but now that I am feeling much better and moving more I can say that I have fully embraced my body as it is now. That doesn’t mean I’m not trying to get back to a more comfortable weight for me, but it does mean that I am rather neutral on how my body looks. This is my body now. I GREW A HUMAN in here. Hawk used to be INSIDE MY BODY. And when you put it that way, how can I not be in awe of my body now, before, forever?
I just can’t seem to give up on jeans though (which have always been hard for me to fit), and decided to try these from Everlane because I LOVE a super-high rise. And I’ve always wanted to try lighter jeans (I figured any stains, etc., will just give them character) so I took a chance on the flax color. Honestly I wish they were even lighter, closer to the canvas color of their new overalls (which I also ordered in a size 12 – remember those Ganni overalls I had – have actually, but I can’t fit into them- ?? I LOVE THEM and wish to replicate them ASAP).
The jeans in the size 32 are comfortable, but that’s because they are a little big once I have worn them for a day or two. I like my jeans to FIT snuggly, but be comfortable (hard to find, I’ll admit), and these could be a little tighter, but I didn’t want to try and switch them out for a 31. I do also wish the leg was a little wider on me, but again my legs are big, so any straight fit is going to look more narrow on me than I’d like.
Overall I’m sort of neutral on them; I think you should try them if you like a high rise, straight leg jean with a little stretch, but maybe size down a size from what you think you should order. I would qualify that by saying that I still have a relatively small waist in ratio to my hips/butt, which is why sizing down would work for me and similar body types, but might not with others. They’re also not AMAZING or anything, so I don’t necessarily recommend them. Like I said – Neutral. haha.
And even though no one asked, I’m still soured a bit on Everlane for reasons I’ve outlined before, and other more recent activities, but I won’t deny that the clothing is accessible to more people and fits many very well. Quite a few of their pieces stand the test of time, hold up nicely, and are work appropriate, which is still very important to a lot of people. I wish they would sharpen up their focus a bit more and tweak some fits to be more modern, for lack of a better term, but otherwise, I’m obviously not quitting Everlane altogether.
Have you continued to buy from Everlane? What are your favorite recent items?
I just started buying from them this year because they came out with some launches I really liked and the price was right; Cashmere polo sweater, oversized organic cotton sweatshirt in red, Mac jacket, tank tops and tees. But then, when I read the stuff about union busting or what they did to Leah, I’m not so keen on supporting them. I like the quality (usually) and the fit (usually), but there ARE other sustainable clothing manufacturers!
Weight is a lifelong struggle for me. I’d love for it not to be, but I m trying to be realistic. Good for you! Hold onto that feeling of strength and pride in what your body accomplished.
I’ve never bought Everlane because they don’t size their clothing for me (16-18, curvy) and their shoes never looked comfortable. Last spring, pre-quarantine, I bought 2 pr Eileen Fisher jeans from her Refresh site (eg used 😉 and just wore them the first time grocery shopping last month and last week (I NEVER leave my house and I am not wearing jeans at home). They fit, love them. Also got some Eileen Fisher tencel wide leg crops in the same order -I like but they’re the teeniest bit tight in the thigh so I haven’t worn them – covering the thigh seems weird in a short wide leg but I’m not happy showing the “tight” right now.
Good luck packing & moving – so exciting!
Here’s my fit story: 1. before children, waist too small for hips, a difficult fix for pants, lots of frustration; 2. after children, sweet spot, I can now buy pants that fit in both waist and hips; 3. after menopause, waist size now too big for hip size, at least according to pant manufacturers, but “happy face”, now easy to find pants with tie or elastic waists or just basically flowy over the hips. Womens’ bodies, right? Just when we get comfortable with whatever they are, they change again, whether we have gained weight or not. As for Everlane, I haven’t bought from them in years, mainly because my favourite bloggers have stopped doing Everlane reviews, and I always relied on their comments to make appropriate choices for me. (I don’t like sending things back, for environmental and many other reasons. And I don’t find the reviews on the site very helpful somehow.) That said, I have never had a problem with anything I did buy from Everlane, back in the day. In fact, I am still regularly wearing everything I have purchased from them, even from their first year of production. So the quality was evidently good. But as I said, haven’t bought anything recently.
