wearing: Old Navy blouse | Thrifted skirt | TIKKR Watch (gifted) | Prada sport sandals | Alexander Wang Donna Hobo
Don’t freak out and leave, it’s still me, the Grechen you know and love, only now, “thriftier” 😉
Remember how I went thrifting for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and got the cream blazer I wore in this post? While I was there, I also snagged this polka-dot skirt. It’s a DIY because it WAS reversible and there were two layers: black & white polka dots and a black & white floral print. I cut out the floral print layer right at the top near the waistband because A: it was ugly, and B: because I wanted to re-create my own version of this Opening Ceremony skirt:
It’s definitely the look I was going for although as I wore it today (walked a lot), I determined that I definitely need to wear a “normal” slip as opposed to a spanx slip, because it kept riding up! If I was an American Apparel model or more daring, I might just wear a pair of boyshorts underneath and call it a day, but I’m NOT that daring, and I’m going for a bit more “elegant” look than that…and as you can tell, the skirt is sheer.
I’m totally impressed with myself for my first EVER DIY – I know it’s not a big deal to those of you who are used to thrifting and working with things, but this is completely foreign to me! I hope to do more of it; I love feeling creative, and I’m pretty happy with the result.
What do you think of my DIY?
You look amazing Grechen!!! Love the skirt, the sheerness makes it so springlike, I love the whole color scheme of it, really really great find!

Hooray Grechen! You did a fabulous job! (I actually like your print a little better than the OC skirt.) That’s what thrifting is, you have to imagine what an item could be and the it’s potential. Be careful because thrifting and DIY gets addicting!

thanks nanashi 🙂
i’m afraid it could get addicting for me…and i do have a problem buying too much stuff ‘cuz it’s cheap 🙂 but i’ll try to limit myself!!!
Good work! I think it turned out fabulously!
I love it! I hadn’t seen that OC skirt but I love the idea!
Perfect as the weather starts to get warmer and you want to start showing a little leg but don’t want the abruptness of going from pants/tights to bare legs!

You have an excellent recreation there!! I love the polka dot print of your skirt and how you managed to spend very little, especially compared to Opening Ceremony’s prices.
Because of you, I am now the happy owner of that Old Navy top too (I got the white version). Thanks for featuring it because it is a perfect, light shirt!

it’s an awesome shirt, isn’t it!! i need the white one too now…
loved your sequin top today BTW 🙂
thank you!!
and you’re absolutely right – i’m “easing” into bare legs right now, i’m not ready to go all out!!
Love it!!! I am always interested in thrifting, but I never seem to take the time to do it (and we’ve got a little shop just down the street that my “thrifty friend” tells me has amazing vintage jewelry!). Maybe it’s time to start when I see a find like your skirt!!
The skirt is so pretty, I have been having the same problem with two new skirts – totally sheer, – one Blue Moon, the other Matta, and I was going to get a spanx, but I’d like something softer looking. Please let me know if you find a slip that you like, I am surprised at the trouble I am having finding one searching online!
love it!! i love that you repurposed the skirt and the sheer polka dot print is super chic! so funny, i just did a similar post last night with a vintage jacket i got. isn’t it fun to alter something you got on the cheap and make it super special? i think your skirt or my jacket would cost a ton if they were in stores now… 🙂

this was my first thrifting experience EVER val! i went with sydney (couldn’t have done it without her). you have to try it 🙂
michelle – i always default to nordstrom for slips, etc. – i did buy a silky one last night for $27, but it’s a bit too short (REALLY short actually), so I’m going to try and find a longer one. also nordstrom rack usually has lots…
so true!! LOVE your jacket also. little changes make the biggest difference, don’t they?
I figured that’s who you went with. I keep telling her I’m going to come to Austin (which is a real possibility now that my daughter is talking about moving there! First, the job…) and have her teach me how to “thrift” and put my outfits together so I get more bang for my buck!
Thanks for the Nordstrom tip!
Totally unrelated, and you probably already know this, but I was excited to find Inhabit linen/cotton sweaters on Bluefly for awesome prices.
This is a very cool outfit! I love how you diy’d a sheer skirt. I want to try the long skirt/maxi dress but fear I am not tall enough to pull it off. You do so fantastically and you have over the years which I admire!
