yesterday, October 31st:
5:45a | woke up – hardly slept at all because of the raging thunderstorms going through here. Ozzie gets SO anxious during storms that he doesn’t sleep and most of the time he’s up on the bed near me shaking, so I don’t sleep either. Thank goodness I didn’t sign up for 6:00 am pure barre, first, I wouldn’t have made it, second, I found out later in the day the studio was flooded anyway…
6:00a | dumped out the rest of the pumpkin ice cream from Trader Joe’s because that may be some of the reason I didn’t sleep well also 😉 too much pumpkin ice cream before bed…take ozzie out for a walk
6:30a | fix coffee, do random stuff around the house, sit down to start working around 6:45
6:45a | check email, respond to email, look at What’s New at Shopbop while I drink my coffee. This is a daily ritual, I’m that addicted! Got a wild hair that I want/need a basic long black maxi dress – one that’s fitted for layering, not flowy, or cinched in at the waist – so search for a little while for one of those. Do some random housekeeping stuff for the blogs, respond to comments, etc.
8:00a | work on my article for IFB
9:00a | work on posts for Grechen’s Codes – get caught up in trying to spend money at Neiman Marcus with their $50 off $200 code. Give up 😉
10:00a | drink my breakfast (David Kirsch protein shake), take a shower, get dressed, vacuum, put the sheets back on the bed that I washed earlier in the morning…
11:00a | decide to create a post based on my search for a black fitted maxi dress, then order one 🙂 (the splendid ribbed maxi dress, which is now sold out in all but xs in black)
1:00p | eat a pear, put my makeup on, try and do something with my hair, but can’t, so I just pull it back like I’m doing pretty much every day lately…take my outfit picture. Go through a dozen pictures to find the best one, crop it, fix the lighting a little, then get it ready for this post.
2:00p | decide I should go and run the errands that I need to, but first I take ozzie out again.
3:30p | back from errands – didn’t do everything I wanted to because I got VERY hungry all of the sudden (which happens to me a lot, as you probably could have predicted based on what I ate so far!) and I have enough to eat for lunch at home. Too hungry to fix anything “healthy” so I eat chips & salsa. And then stuff my face with sea salt & turbinado dark chocolate almonds from Trader Joe’s. Go into a BAD FOOD coma. Spend some time reading blogs, working on social media: pinterest, facebook, twitter, etc. Browse eBay, add some new things to my collections.
4:30p | work on finishing up this post and write a post for next week for the Simon Malls style setter blog (I’m the blogger for the Domain mall here in Austin).
6:30p | start to think about making dinner…squash and kale maybe? to make up for “lunch”? probably done “working” for the day…
Exciting, huh? So that’s it, what I do most days, some days, time spent running errands is longer, depending on whether I need to “shop” or not (I try to go out and try stuff on, feel things, look at things as many days as I can, so I can pass on my opinions), or if I have a meeting/lunch/appt.
I only wrote this so you can see my dilemma with regard to my wardrobe, and shopping for my closet; my life is primarily spent at my desk. At least I have a good view 🙂
Have a good weekend everyone. Tomorrow I turn 41. And next year, Grechen’s Closet turns 10. Can’t wait for what’s next!!!
I appreciated getting a glimpse into your day, thanks. Many nine to fivers would be envious of your (relative) freedom. I’m still fixating on the sea salt chocolate, yum! (Dumping Trader Joe’s pumpkin ice cream is heroic.) I also love your outfit. You planted the style suggestion of more monochromatic clothes. I hope that your 41st year brings you personal joy, and continued professional success. I know that you’re moving soon, and that will be a new adventure for your family and fashion-hunting. “You go, Grechen!”
Love the view! Hope you have a wonderful birthday and the weather improves for you all.
Hi Grechen! I really appreciated a look at your day as well! I love your honesty as well as watching you on a slim adventure! (I am on that same “adventure” filled with Halloween candy tormenting me…threw a bunch out, in fact!) I love you blog (SINCEREST CONGRATULATIONS and MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS!) and admire you very much. I always find your style, tips, and information very approachable, real and inspirational. Love your outfit(s)…always! I am still plugging along on my little blog which takes twists and turns (it is meandering its way into whatever it is…had a few mean-spirited comments that sort of threw me off, but, I guess that’s life and I can’t let it derail me). Anyway, I really love all of your blogs and information. Your style and words really resonate with me!
Thank you always, and all the best to you!!! Kim
……AND have the HAPPIEST of birthdays! Best to you! Kim
HAPPY pre-birthday!!!! … the shoes are out of my size :o( …. i’ll be on the hunt tho for my size ON sale in the future!!!
Kim, I can relate to what you wrote. Unfortunately, there will always be detractors, but don’t let that stop you. I also have a blog (not fashion), and curt comments bothered me at first. Don’t let “mean-spirited” jealous people, prevent you from doing that which you love. BTW: I like your site, and look forward to reading more. Take that, trolls!
RJS, thank you for your very kind responses (in both places!). Grechen creates the kind of community that I enjoy being part of because lovely people like you are part of it! Here’s to the happiness of all of us! Yay, Grechen, for creating your community and attracting kind, practical and creative women! Your spirit and that of your followers is refreshing and terrific. Thanks always, Kim!
i am thankful every day that this is my job. and for my freedom from a 9-5 schedule, although i do have the toughest boss EVER 😉
and thank you so much for the birthday wishes!
thank you! it’s improved a lot, hot & sunny – back to normal austin weather!!
i’m sorry for the mean comments. it happens though, and you just have to shrug them off – easier said than done though, i know!
keep writing, i enjoy reading your blog – i especially love your ‘latest revelations’ at the end of your posts; it’s a great practice actually…
thank goodness we don’t have trick-or-treaters around here, i would be in trouble. i actually managed to get all the way through halloween without candy corn or mallowcreme pumpkins (my FAVORITES). can’t believe it.
thanks erika! keep stalking the shoes! they’re also coming out with other versions (perforated leather, etc.) that should be AMAZING!!!
Happy birthday! You make 40/41 look good! Very interesting post and cool outfit, as always.
Happy birthday! And sometimes it’s just fine to shop for a pretend life. Your pretend life is entertainment and education for us:).
Great look and I loved the glimpse into one of your days! Wishing you a very happy early birthday and all the best that 41 will bring.
Quick, off-topic question: when/how often does James Perse typically have “private sales”? I feel like I’m constantly missing out on them and I am determined not to next time. Thanks girl!
they’ve done them in the past in january, june/july & november – if you do a search (in the search bar in the right sidebar) for james perse sale, you’ll see all the posts about james perse sales and they seem to follow that pattern. i usually hear from them a week or so in advance of a sale, so i’ll definitely be posting about it 🙂
Ooh…November. :). I’m staying tuned! Thanks for the quick response!
