This is totally random, but I was catching up on old episodes of Californication last night (I’m not liking season 3 very much…) and Hank takes Becca to buy clothes and doesn’t understand that she wants to buy a transparent shirt for $200+ and says that he’s a man, he has a uniform. Which made me think about my uniform.
I’ve talked about my uniform before, it’s usually a skirt/jeans, tee, and cardigan/sweater in black, gray or white. And I really believe that most of my problems in life stem from having TOO MANY things that DON’T fit my “uniform.” I get stressed out when I look in my closet and see so much stuff…I’m paralyzed. If I just had a few pairs of jeans, basic tees & my cashmere sweaters in my closet, life would be so much easier! I waste way too much time and energy trying to be “cute” or unique or different – and right now, I NEED that time & energy (for the Texas Style Council blogger conference :)).
This will be my uniform for a while – jeans (these are Current/Elliot and I’ve been living in them), tank or a tee (right now I’m wearing a Vogel10 bra cami) + cashmere sweater (this one is actually my very 1st cashmere sweater – by Theory!) and Repetto BB flats. END OF STORY. It’s a good, classic, comfortable look – what else do I need?
Maybe I’ll do what Nanashi did and take stuff out of my closet and only start putting it back in if I miss it or want to wear it. Otherwise, I need to GET RID OF STUFF. Minimize my closet. Life would be so much easier….
Do you have a uniform? What is it?
my uniform is usually a dress, belt, and cardigan. I am at a total loss when I have to wear pants–I hate winter!
My work uniform (since it’s 5 days a week) is a pair of black pants, cardigan, long sleeve tee or tank, and flats. I find it quite boring but it takes so little effort to get out the door in the morning, I’ll probably stick with it until I decide I want more oomph in my outfits.
Grechen, I love your uniform. It reminds me of Audrey Hepburn- classic, chic and timeless. You always look great!
I wish I had a uniform, but do to my crippling multiple personality disorder, my uniform changes constantly. Right now, it’s tights, a dress, a sweater, flats, and an owl necklace (so I look smart). But then it’ll be skinny jeans, a tunic, a cardigan and flats……hmmm……maybe my uniform is cardigans and flats…..
I’m drooling over those repetto flats…I agree with Cathy, it’s a very classic and timeless look.
my uniform used to be a dress + tights + leather jacket but nowadays that’s no longer true. I NEED to purge my closet too! One does not need 40 winter coats…geez.
My uniform is almost the same like yours but I don’t wear skirts. I am jeans/pants kind of girl.
I wear dresses only in the summer. Oh, and I don’t wear heels. :-))
Do you mind if I ask about your Current/Elliotts? Do they run true to size? Everybody advice to take one size down in The Boyfriends, would you agree? Thank you!
i took my normal size in my current/elliots, but i’m very hippy/have a big butt 😉
if you’re more “straight” i would definitely suggest to size down – they do stretch a lot, and in spite of my butt, i do get saggy-butt with these jeans, and they’re REALLY big in the waist. to fit my hips i always have to take my normal size though.
you need to participate in a CLOTHING SWAP!!!!
hopefully we’ll be having one before the TX style council conf 🙂
thanks cathy! i think in the spring/summer my uniform will change – i wear more dresses when it’s warm. i still like to wear dresses…arrgh. i just need to stop shopping…forever.
that’s the thing – i guess sometimes i really feel like i’m not “into” fashion, i’m really just into dressing myself. if that makes sense. i just want to look/feel my best in whatever i wear. and i think everyone kind of KNOWS what suits them the best, so why step out? whatever makes life easier…but still a little fun.
i love your uniform 🙂
My uniform used to be jeans + a sweater, button-down, or tee, with ballet flats. Period. Then I decided to write a style blog, and realized I can’t get away with wearing jeans every single damm day. So now my uniform is skirts + tights + boots, or pants and a blazer, or a dress layered with a long-sleeved top, or jeans and a concert tee. Essentially, I don’t have a uniform any more. And I’m glad. I wear what I want depending on the weather, if I’m chasing after my kids at the playground, or if I’m hiding at home avoiding the cold weather. Anything goes. And I love that!
Heaven forbid!!!
Uniform #1: I usually wear either black pants, a tee and a sweater or blazer to work and add a statement piece of jewelry. Uniform #2: Dark skinny jeans, flats, a white tee, cardigan and the ubiquitous statement necklace/earrings/cuff. You’re 100% right about not having to choose every day being much less stressful. I find that I usually choose the things that fit the best and have the most impact with the least effort.
Dresses, tights, boots, a jacket or cardigan, a scarf, a cuff, and a large handbag always. Completely inappropriate considering that I live in San Antonio, TX!
Thank you Grechen.
I am not stick figured for sure, I have hips as well. My gut feeling told me to take my usual size, just had to confirm it:-)
How do you handle this gap in the waist?
i just wear long shirts LOL – i hate the waist gap, but it’s inevitable for me….
I used to be a uniform person when I started university because it seemed easier (black shorts or jeans & a plain coloured tshirt) but started to feel trapped like I couldn’t wear anything interesting because people would be used to my plain clothing. Then I went overseas with a mindset of “anything goes” and came back able to mix things up a bit more. Now days I always make an effort to put together cute/interesting outfits rather than dressing down so that I can make use of my wardrobe properly.
