I have never worn a white dress in my life – no, not even when I got married the first time – and never really thought I would, but lately, I’ve been craving one; I’m DRAWN towards white dresses if I’m out shopping. I even tried one on and although I didn’t really like the style/cut on me, I didn’t mind the white. Surprising, especially since I’ve been avoiding anything white (other than t-shirts) forever. Keeping clean is one thing that I am concerned about with white clothing, but mostly, I’ve been paralyzed by the idea that “big girls” like me aren’t supposed to wear white pants, or white dresses or anything white on “the bottom” for fear that it will make us look wider/bigger/shorter.
I’m not really one to stick by “style rules” as they’re handed down, but for some reason, I’ve never bothered to challenge this one. Until now š
Do you wear white dresses during the Summer? white jeans? How do you deal with keeping them clean & crisp?
I have a nice Helmut Lang white dress but I rarely wear it! You should try white linen pants (I would wear my G1 all the time they are very slimming!) I also have a cute white skirt from splendid that I wear very often! Also have you seen in person the James Perse military style jacket you posted last week? I’m not sure if I want to splurge on that one…..
I wear white a lot in the summer, even though I live in NYC. I don’t know if I have any real tips that you couldn’t think of yourself but off the top of my head I would say–buy multiples of t-shirts etc., get those tide-to-go and chlorox bleach pens and use them, know how to get out the mystery yellow stains (I recommend lemon juice and sunlight if all else fails), and be prepared to do at least one “white wash” with a pretreat/presoak per week. Also, learn to accept imperfection and that white clothes just do not last, so don’t spend a lot of money on them. If you do, befriend your drycleaner š
no, i haven’t seen it in person (not a lot of places around here sell james perse…) but i NEED IT. it looks crazy soft and really versatile, but also soooo expensive. it’ll show up on sale or somewhere with a code eventually š
i love the idea of white linen pants, but they’re just about my worst fear!! perhaps i’ll try though…
An aside: I just bought a fantastic military style jacket at GAP last week for practically nothing. It must have been a return. Drawstring waist..adorbs on.
Once again, I find that you are reading my mind! I have become single-minded on finding the perfect white dress. I want a sleeveless one in linen–maybe a shirtdress or princess seamed style. And today, I found one that came close at Henry Lehr in Amagansett, but it was a little too sheer (voile fabric) and I’m not a slip girl.
And…I love my white skinny jeans for summer wear. I’m never daring enough to wear them in the winter, but I always want to be “one of those girls” that does, with a cashmere sweater. I usually figure that they’ll only survive one season. I wash them almost every time I wear them. And I agree with Joanna, don’t spend much on them.
thanks joanna! i definitely have multiple white t-shirts, so that i never wear one enough to get the dreaded arm-hold stains! but i love your lemon juice & sunlight idea! I’ll have to try that on an old james perse tee i haven’t worn in a while.
That’s funny. My mom used to tell me to try that. I never have. But I bought the “Stainguard” antiperspirant from…??? lady speedstick? And it seems to help.
I just saw that Emily from cupcakes and cashmere is wearing the white madewell dress on her blog today. I’m sure if I like it on her though….
oh, yeah…just clicked over. seems over-styled to me, i prefer the simplicity of the dress itself, without a belt, or if it’s belted, no necklace š
I would just note that if you use lemon juice, be sure to rinse the item in COLD water to get the juice out, because lemon juice will react to heat and make brown spots. It’s the same for other citrus juices and, I think, Coca-Cola.
