You may, or may not, know that I’m not generally a fan of Target collaborations. Not only because I don’t like to see designers knock themselves off, but also because the end results usually ends up looking and feeling cheap. And the fit always tends to go more towards “juniors” sizing, which also means I can never wear anything. Nevertheless, I always WANT to like Target collaborations (especially this one) and I always look forward to seeing them in person…so while I was at Target this weekend, I took a closer look.
The leopard-print pieces and the accessories were horrible (the lips? OMG) – so cheap and tacky looking in my opinion. But I did like a few pieces enough to go and try them on, but not buy:
First, I tried on the sleeveless metallic jacquard dress in burgundy. It IS shiny IRL, but not in a really terrible way; I actually would have purchased it if it’d fit. I tried on the medium, which wouldn’t zip up, but otherwise fit well, besides being a little shorter than I like. The large zipped up, but was way too big in the bust/underarms. I suppose if I really loved this dress, it MIGHT be worth getting tailored, but not really. It’s a nice dress, and would have been really nice if it fit, but it didn’t…
I also tried on the black/gray/white shirtdress (hello!! it’s my color palette!!!) and really liked it, other than the fit. Again. The large was a bit big, but more comfortable around my hips than the medium. I could have forgiven everything and bought the dress if not for the sleeves; they are HUGE. And there’s nothing you can do about them. I tried rolling them up, but the polyester combined with the size of the sleeves made it impossible. The print is interesting, and I loved the star-print layer underneath, and I could see this being a really fun dress to wear with tights in the Fall, but those sleeves!! Crazy.
I did not try on the two jackets pictured there, but I did think they both looked more expensive than they are. The leather jacket seemed to be pretty high quality, and the tuxedo jacket was really nice and interesting. My gut says that the tuxedo jacket would be too long and shapeless on me, and same for the leather jacket (maybe not shapeless, but definitely too long). I was generally impressed by those two pieces though.
All in all, the collection has WAY too many crazy prints in it for my taste, and of course, fit issues, but I like to see a collaboration with an edgy, contemporary boutique. Maybe next time, they’ll get more of the details right…
Have you tried anything on from the KZ for Target collection? Buy anything?
I checked out The Shops as well. Granted the Kirna Zabete clothes were super small, I liked them more than I have liked past collaborations. What I really loved was the home stuff – did check any of that out?

love your review! you make me want to try on that long-sleeve dress now…
i did see the curiosity shoppe stuff, the mugs were so cute, but not the patch nyc pieces. maybe i didn’t look hard enough? but also my store here is kind of lame, they don’t always have a great selection of the collaboration stuff…
Hey! I posted a review of some of the Kirna Zabete for Targ items I tried on yesterday. I like the collaborations because it’s something a little different, but I usually go in to them with low expectations, at least as far as the level of quality. As much as I’d love to see a fabulous and luxurious collaboration, most of the time they aren’t.
I didn’t like the lip prints all that much and the accessories were just okay (although I really wanted to try on that blue hat, that looked fab), but I liked the direction of this line. Lots of print mixing and they weren’t afraid to use color. Overall, I thought it was just okay, but I really like the brocade pieces and bought the teal skirt. I may or may not keep it. It depends on what Nicole Ritchie’s collaboration with Macy looks like on Wednesday, lol.
I tried on that leather jacket and it has a cute shape (and hit me about the top of my hips), but it is nowhere worth the $200 price tag. The leather is too thin and wrinkly!

i loved that teal skirt on you! and i didn’t even look at the price tag on the leather jacket until i looked it up online. and was honestly shocked at the $199 tag on it! it’s not a bad jacket, but seemed worth more like $99 than twice that.
I like the tuxedo jacket, but probably not enough to buy. I have my eye on one of the schoolboy blazers at the GAP (I like that they have stretch in them because they are SO comfy and the fit is good on my linebacker shoulders….not to mention over a brace!). Sometimes I think I like the Target collabs in theory more than in reality. Home is another story….LOVE!
Thanks! Probably my biggest complaint about The Shops at Target is that even in a well-stocked store you really have to search it out. It is spread out all over the place – especially the home stuff. I really had to look to find both Curiousity Shoppe and Patch. Chances are it was at your store but impossible to find. Not great retailing if you ask me.

I tried on the grey printed dress, too, and had the same thought: love it EXCEPT the sleeves are huge! I wish there were some way to alter them but that material is probably not very easily altered.
right? why did they have to ruin the dress with those sleeves?? how did someone not notice that would be an issue? i predict most of them ending up on clearance for $12.99. then maybe it would be worth it to buy and do SOMETHING to fix the sleeves. although yes, it would be really tough with that fabric….
Thanks for this review… it’s so true about all the Target collections by higher-end designers… it’s all crap! The fit, the fabric/material quality – cheap. It’s really a shame …and the all the hype it receives beforehand. Some people just don’t get it…
