James Perse ruched pencil skirt | several years old, size 3…time to let go of this…
James Perse slub crew neck tee | size 2
Everlane Street Shoe | gift for review from Everlane (they seem to be all sold out/on waitlist) – review post
Here’s another white t-shirt I love, although I prefer v or u-necks over crew neck tees; I do like to have one around for layering, mostly. The best thing about this James Perse tee is the curved hem, though, it makes it more interesting.
I didn’t actually wear this outfit exactly yesterday; instead of the tee I wore my Madewell oversized white button-down – I met a friend for lunch and wandering and I didn’t want to be cold. But I should have just worn this. I learned a couple of things with that outfit:
- It’s time for me to let go of this skirt. I’ve tried to do it before, and couldn’t, because I do love it, but it’s not good enough for me anymore. It’s too long (so I have to bunch it up around the knees) and it’s not as snug on me as I’d like. So…if you’re interested, shoot me an email!
- Skirts aren’t my thing anymore. It used to be that one of my “uniforms” was a skirt, tank top & cardigan, but I’m not feeling that lately. I haven’t “felt” it for years, actually. The last time I wore that uniform, I was pretty ambivalent about it.
- Short skirts + oversized tops = not great on me. I tend to wear skirts with drapey tops, and if the skirt is long, fine, but short doesn’t work. I like it, and I’m comfortable, but I can LOOK so much better and still feel just as good with a dress and cardigan over top.
- Dresses on the other hand…they’re easier, more flattering on me, and where I want to go this summer. Which leads me to…
This dress. I ordered it this morning from Shopbop with my credit. I tried it on a while ago, and then again yesterday and did that thing in the dressing room where you sigh and just give up because it’s so good? you know what I’m talking about? The problem is, I also tried on this similar, but slightly different dress and felt the same way.
But after REALLY thinking about it, decided on the first dress, the “belted” tank dress, over the open back dress because it’s shorter. I’ll be honest, I’d like to have both dresses, and maybe I will when it goes on sale, but the smarter choice for me right now is the shorter one. But man…that open back is SO GOOD. And the length was very nice, actually, I’d wear it, but not the most ideal for me.
(James Perse is offering free shipping on orders over $150 through 5/24 with code MEMORIALDAY15 if you’re interested in either of these dresses. Or anything else. The New Arrivals Are TDF. LOTS OF LINEN!!!)
Anyway, I’ve been quietly going through my closet the last couple of weeks with a very critical eye towards what works for my life right now, and what doesn’t, and have purged quite a few more things. I still have more to go, so stay tuned next week for those.
You know what they say…the only constant is change. And that is certainly true with regard to my wardrobe. Always changing. And I’ve discovered that that’s okay.

Oh, and a quick update on the street shoes, although they’re not available to buy at the moment. After having that one issue with them the first time I wore them (full review here), I’ve been VERY comfortable wearing them since then. I wore them for a few hours wandering around the mall yesterday, while wearing a simple pair of footies, and was super happy with how they felt. And I LOVE the pointy toe, it’s a style I can wear with shorter dresses/skirts because it elongates my legs. Otherwise, my legs look rather more stumpy in flats and short hemlines…
Happy Happy Friday!!!
If James Perse could take the top of the open back dress and put it with with the bottom of the belted tank dress – that’s the dress I’m looking for!
ha! well…
that would be nice 🙂
hows the bra situation with that open back dress?
covers it perfectly. i was wearing my new natori bra i talk about so much when i tried it on – the other tank dress, the ruched belted one, would need a racerback bra. the open back dress was fine with just a “normal” one.
I love the look of fitted dresses on other people, but my body is kind of “CON” on the body-con part! I love everything James Perse has come out with this spring/summer!
On a side note: I’m finishing up my closet project this week, but like you said, it’s never really done.
