Happy Thursday! Here’s your early access to James Perse’s online sample sale + free shipping on any order with code GRCHNNEWYR16. There are some GREAT new additions (my wool sweatshirt is 75% off!!) and new markdowns on previous sale items in case you missed out last time. Please read on for my thoughts on specific items, and leave comments on any items you own, or if you have questions about ANYTHING – all sales are final, as usual, so be aware before you checkout!
Wool raglan sweatshirt – I have this in size 2, and love it. It’s quite warm, and I believe it’s too heavy to wear a coat over. The most brilliant thing about this is that the sleeves are LINED, so it’s warm, for one, but also makes it so you don’t need to layer a long-sleeve shirt underneath. This is so cozy. But again, it’s pretty warm…
Shirred v-neck dress – this is a stunning dress, I tried it on in the Kona color, which is a nice deep brown/purple color, and am going to order it in a size 2 in black.
Moleskine tank dress – this is the same fabrication as my hooded dress, so it’s a light-weight fleece with a little stretch, and very flattering on. The side slit is quite high though, so keep that in mind, or take it to a tailor to have it stitched up. This dress would be great for cooler spring/fall wardrobes, but too warm for summer.
Yosemite yoga pants – these are a STEAL! I have one pair of yosemite yoga pants (not this style) and they’re one of my favorite leggings for Pure Barre. I love most that they’re the perfect length for me…short!
What do you think? Are you buying anything this time around? What are you interested in? Do you have any feedback on previous purchases? (please see these posts on the previous sale for more on other sale items).
honestly, after purchasing a few of the JP pieces from the last sale, and practically LIVING in them, I don’t think one can have too much JP in her closet! I’m SO TEMPTED to buy that wool raglan sweatshirt–looks so cozy! And I love the color and look of the V-neck dress, which if I did buy, would be in that beautiful Kona color too.
that dress is really good – it is mid-calf length though FYI. sometimes i find those harder to walk in! the color is so pretty though, hard to describe, but almost a burgundy brown.
the wool raglan sweatshirt is great, very warm though! and honestly, a little “bulky” especially for me in the chest area, since i’m so small there… but i love it a lot.
What size do you wear in the Yosemite Yoga leggings? I’d say my legs are shaped similarly to yours, but I have a wider waist after having 4 babies! Trying to determine what size would be right to order. Thanks!
Thanks, Gretchen! I’ve had a James Perse itch that I’ve been wanting to scratch, and this was just the ticket. Order placed! Here’s hoping sizing works out (I’m always a bit skittish with final sale things, and I’m never sure what size I am anymore.)
i wear a size 2 in pretty much everything – including these. the waistline is really good, it’s not too high or too low, more of a medium rise. i wore mine to class today and never have to fidget with them…mine are quite old, though and not like any of the ones available. although i did try on the spiral seam leggings in the store…
hope that helps!!
oh! what did you order??
i do hope they work out…if not, after sale, i will do a swap post where you might be able to find someone to swap sizes with you.
I’m happy to see the Jersey T-shirt dress is on sale. I’m wearing this dress right now for the first time since getting it at the last sale. LOVE the material and the simplicity of the dress! You can dress it up or down. It’s rather chilly in LA so I just threw a shawl over this when I left for work this morning and my old Doc Martens(!) The Dyed Henley Dress was another purchase I made at the last sale and I love this dress too. I have been wearing it over leggings and it also looks great with some boots. I like how it’s lined or double layered. I think the $39 price for this one is fantastic!
so nervous to get that shirred dress, I’m petite and afraid the size 0 is too small and 1 will be too big…any advice?
I love those dresses! How is the moleskin for hiding lumps and, well, saddlebags? Sometimes thicker fabric is more forgiving, so I am tempted to try Moleskin Tank Dress.
It’s good. Not amazing. But good :). I’m wearing my hoodie dress without spanx today and surviving LOL
What size do you normally wear? This dress is shirted so pretty tight around the legs/hips so maybe a 1 would work for you? I don’t know though. Maybe chat with a rep? I’ve heard they are helpful…
Think I’m about to jump in and get that Ruched Belt Dress. I’m tempted by the Open Back Dress too, but that light gray color makes me wary – like it could show every bump (and I don’t like to wear Spanx).
I am a size 4 in JP, I think… being 6′ tall and with wide hips. I do have some tops that are a size 3 but I think with the tight dresses, a 4 might be better for me…
One final thought – I would like to see what that HIGH GAUGE SHIRRED DRESS looks like on a “normal” person!
I pared back my order after initially putting something like $500 worth of stuff in my shopping cart! Yikes.
I ended up ordering basics: yoga pants (I got some a year or two ago in a size 3, I ordered size 2 this time), a men’s hoodie for myself since I preferred the men’s colors to the women’s, and sweatpants (size 3). So in retrospect, a pretty dull order… It’s January and I’m nesting, I guess!
I didn’t order the softdrape dress, the drawstring boyfriend pants, or the A-line tank dress, mostly because of fears about sizes. I’m very slight up top and I’ve got wide hips, so sizing with dresses especially can be tricky.
well…my shirred dress should arrive mid-week next week. am i normal enough 😉 ??
it’ll be hard to style for cold weather though, might have to do an inside shot!
i like the ruched belted dress a lot, and i get a lot of compliments on it, weirdly enough – people really like the “belt” around it…
I’m fairly new to your blog and you introduced me to James Perse! Would you say all of the clothing is ethically made? This would be my first purchase, so I’m a little nervous that it’s final sale! Can you talk to me about sizing? I usually take an XS in most women’s dresses. Sometimes a small. If it’s junior’s sizing, I’ll jump up to a medium. Would you guess that I’d wear a 0 in JP? Suuuuper interested in the shirred dress you featured, and then I’ve been searching for a new parka for a couple years (Minnesota winters!) and the yosemite down-filled parka just might be the ticket! But again I’m debating on 0 vs. 1. Any thoughts? Anyone out there have the jacket?
Thanks! 🙂
Okay and one more thing – how long does the sale last? Do pieces/sizes sell out quickly? I’m interested to see the shirred dress on you but not sure if I want to wait to order!
first, no, i wouldn’t consider that it’s all “ethically” made in a very strict sense. they do sometimes use recycled polyester, have used organic cotton in the past, and nearly everything is made in the US, so in my opinion, it’s a more ethical company than most. i DO consider james perse generally sustainable, though, because i wear the hell out if it. for ten years, i’ve been buying and wearing the brand and it holds up better than nearly anything else i’ve ever worn; i still have my oldest pieces and wouldn’t consider letting them go!
that said, i’d say in the dress, take a 0 unless you’re hippy – i have always sort of found that many dresses i could go down a size in IF i wasn’t so hippy or have a larger bottom half than top…if you’re fairly straight through the hips, or don’t have a big differential between waist/hips, then i think the smaller size could possibly be better –
on the parka – i would also say err on the smaller side –
i would try to chat with CS if you can, they might have more input than me, or maybe someone here can chime in if they have either piece!
the sale will last more than a week…
i’ll try to get the dress rushed so i can post about it relatively early next week!
Definitely normal enough! 🙂
I’m going to get the Yosemite yoga leggings for my daughter who’s a size 4-6, so a 2 in JP? And I desperately want one (or more, but I’ll stick to one!) of the dresses. I’ve got the short sleeve Henley (I want to say “catatonic” 😉 ) dress and the crepe jersey dolman dresses in my cart and I’m torn. I don’t do body con, but that Henley looks so perfect for my summer life. And if the dolman was still available in charcoal/black, I’d jump on it, but I’m not wild about the peet color.
I’ve been following your blog for a while now and after learning about (and loving) Emerson Fry through you, I’ve been wanting to try out James Perse. Thought the sample sale would be a great time to test it out but after going through all the offered pieces, I found myself still lusting after the black hoodie maxi dress you had posted about earlier.
So I ended up ordering the hoodie dress (unfortunately full price but at least I got free international shipping and an in-app discount via Revolve). Hopefully it’ll look as good on me as it does on you.!
oh ! i hope you love the dress, please let me know what you think when you get it 🙂 I wore it again yesterday (I think that was three times this week) – i can already tell it will be worth what i paid for it. should be, it was A LOT!!!
sorry you didn’t find anything at the sale, but it’s better to get what you REALLY want first, rather than try to satisfy your craving with other things. i’m still working on learning that lesson honestly!!
Hi Grechen–I already placed one order but am contemplating another–do you know how long the private sale will be private and how long the free shipping promotion will be valid?
Thank you.
It goes public on the 18th and the free shipping code is valid through the 31st
grechen, do you think they’ll offer an additional % off as the sale draws to a near? i’ve got quite a large order sitting in my cart, but i don’t want to pull the trigger if there’s an opportunity for more savings in a few days. thanks so much!
i don’t think they will. but i do not know that for sure…
thanks for the reply! i’ve got the boucle cardigan, cashmere turtleneck, and apiece apart sandals sitting in my cart and i’ve been hemming and hawing over it all weekend, trying to decide what is a “have” versus a “need”.
i bought those leggings for $36 about a month ago&i was surprised that the material is like a plain cotton – not a shiny “performance “material – which i thought would more justify the original price.
however- for 36& certaintly 29- they are excellent!
i am about to buy the silk cardigan in bark – which although pocket less – is perfect weight&texture. i would prefer a darker color but it’s a neutral so easy to wear.
trying to find a reason not to buy…
that is a lovely sweater – too long for me, i think, but it would be a great lightweight layer 😉
sorry, was i supposed to convince you not to buy it??
Thanks so much for the input! Looking forward to seeing the dress on you! <3
LOL, yes! i wanted to hear that it was the 1 thing that JP makes that is really shoddy!
anyway, i ordered it, looking forward to it & appreciative of your S&H code!
thanks so much!
My ruched belt dress arrived! I’m just not sure about it. I tried it with and w/o a spanx-like garment underneath. I’m not used to wearing such clingy clothing, so it could just be me being insecure. But that belt – I just don’t know where it should go. I have wide hips and a narrow waist, I am also very tall and long-waisted, so it doesn’t want to sit on my hips, it keeps migrating north and bunching up. I don’t think it’s returnable, so I guess I better decide I like it 🙂
The other thing is that the side seams don’t seem to be “even”, as if it were sewn incorrectly.
when i first got mine, i was conflicted about it too, but mostly because i was wearing it the wrong way!! first, make sure the belt goes all the way around the dress, i was wearing it all in the front at first, because i had no idea (but duh, belt! I should have know…)…and thought the same thing about the seams. maybe that’s the problem?
i also have wide hips and a narrow waist. and the belt DOES seem to accentuate the difference between my hips/waist – it tends to sit sort of in between on me. that’s where a “clingy” spanx-type undergarment is helpful; it will keep the dress from moving. i have one that’s like that, and have to be careful what I wear it with!
i love my belted dress, but it did take me some time to really appreciate it i guess. i get so many compliments on it when i do wear it though, people love the “belt” for some reason! i mostly love the length and the neckline on me 😉
OK, thanks for the moral support! 🙂
I’ll hang in there with it and maybe it’ll “grow” on me.
I had just bought a JP ribbed tank that I have been living in – my first purchase! Then I rediscovered your blog while I was looking up some JP reviews – thank you for the sale notification! I got another tank and a long ribbed cashmere skirt. The skirt is beautiful! I want so much more! I’m on the larger end of the JP spectrum and I always thought nothing would fit me. So happy to discover otherwise! I will have to try some of the dresses you love!
Rosie´s last blog post ..Everyone Has a Capsule Wardrobe
oh! so glad you got that cashmere skirt, i love it! it’s just not very practical for me here in texas.
when i was a size 12-14-16 i could always wear a 4 in james perse in most things, except pants – i found the sizing for a lot of the things to be very accommodating. i still have my first JP pieces from about 10 years ago!
i’m enjoying your blog BTW, i like your premise that everyone already has a capsule wardrobe. i hope you’ll be back here more often now that you’ve rediscovered my blog 🙂
Hi Gretchen! Just saw your reply. 🙂 Thank you! You have encourged me to try more than my beloved tanks and cashmere skirt!
