People are uncomfortable with “unconventional” personal style. It’s easier when we all look the same/normal, and wear clothes that are flattering. Clothes that highlight our “assets,” as it were. Our aim when getting dressed should be to look taller, slimmer, but at the same time less imposing. Don’t stand out too much. Don’t try to look too young.
I don’t have the slightest idea how to dress, or what my personal style is. Everyday I wear something different, depending on my mood and what I’m doing that day. Today I’m working at home packing up orders, then I’m going to get my haircut. Maybe I’ll see my friend for a few minutes. I felt like wearing a dress because I shaved my legs. But I am in between toenail polish, so I wanted to wear sneakers.
Do I look good? I think so. When I look in the mirror I like what I see.
Do I feel like me? Absolutely. 100% Grechen.
Am I comfortable? Very comfortable.
I don’t post my outfits here because I think I’m something special, or have any wisdom about personal style worth imparting, except maybe that we should wear what we feel good in. I post to share the things I buy and wear that I think are interesting. And maybe pretty. But always well-made.
Take it or leave it. Appreciate it or don’t. I’m not dressing for you. And I’m certainly not trying to tell anyone how they should dress.
I understand why some people have a hard time with personal style that is different from their own, or that is outside of the accepted “norm”. No one likes their world view to be challenged, especially not by overalls and oversized tops.
But challenge can lead to growth if you let it. Who knows? Flowy tops, undefined waists and orthopedic shoes could be in your future 🙂
Am I missing the point if I say this outfit looks FANTASTIC on you?! Can’t imagine that dress looking better.
Hurray to this sentiment! One of the things I love about you (besides the fact that, like me, you’re an over-analyzer!) is that you are authentic! You are YOU!
As we used to say in college, “F*ck ‘em if they can’t take a joke!”
I absolutely agree with you (although translating that into the way I actually dress is still a work in progress). I do think the dress looks fab on you too.
Grechen, I love reading your blog! I have similar style of dress (or rather ‘non-style’) & love the simplicity of the clothes you wear. You look beautiful & comfortable in your outfit. Thanks for putting yourself out there & sharing your words, insights, clothing ideas and all.
thank you 🙂
no, not at all…
thank you !!
over-analyzers unite!!
although perhaps we should support each other in trying to NOT overanalyze as much LOL
You are so cool Gretchen, even if youre boiling your ass off down there. I’m the opposite, too, I don’t like cookie cutter style and dance to the beat of my own drum- Im like you I wear what I like and what is comfortable and ethically made toward workers and the environment. A rebel with a cause. Love , Gena
First of all-Love the dress on you! And to read that you don’t know your personal style made me feel -well relieved. “What’s your personal style” quizzes and “How to find your personal style”- I’m (as my kids would say) over it. I just want to wear what I want to wear! Some days it is lacy and girly, some days preppy, some days who the hell knows what bucket it fits into. Always look forward to reading your blog. Thanks!
I love the dress! Of course you should dress to please yourself and no one else. Your style is different from mine, but I continue to read your blog because I often learn something new and it’s interesting to see a different style. What a boring world it would be if everyone looked the same.
