1 James Jeans Twiggy cropped jeans | $88 after the code (these always seem to get very good reviews, all sizes left)
2 Giles & Brother open nut & bolt ring | $31 after the code
3 Giles & Brother large hex ring | $33 after the code
4 Joie a la plage san remo sandals | $75 after the code
5 Riller & Fount a-line cardigan | $69 after the code (I LOVE this, it’s such an interesting shape – I’d size down)
6 Three Dots reversible cardigan | $77 after the code (for when you want gray and sometimes white!!)
7 ATM turtleneck tank | $51 after the code
8 Three Dots draped back dress | $61 after the code (interesting, but versatile black dress. I love the heavier material on this, it drapes beautifully)
So, today is the last day to save 25% on sale items at Shopbop with code 25MORE. I love this code for jeans, underwear, and workout wear, if the things I want make it to this point, that is. This time, I ordered the black version of the ACNE bree tercel dress I already have in royal blue (sold out). It was a steal at $81, and I think I’ll be glad I got it. I know…I’m breaking my multiples rule, but if I keep the black version, I’ll probably get rid of the blue one, since I don’t wear it.
Anyway, these are just a few things I thought were good buys if you happen to be looking for anything similar. It’s always a good idea to wait for this code to buy jeans, most brands go on sale eventually, and if your size is left, you can get a great pair for under $100. Ditto for basic dresses, jewelry and some sandals. Did you find anything worth buying??

i LOVE those rings!!! My dad was and husband is a hardware salesman. 🙂 But they’re only available in a size 7…my child-size fingers are heartbroken.
Thanks for sharing – I love seeing quirky jewelry.
i love giles & brother so much…i can’t wear it though, only 14k for me 😉 not a bad problem to have, really, but there is so much “affordable” jewelry i’d love to be able to wear!!
How funny– I just pulled the trigger on the reversible gray and white cardigan this morning (I’m trying to incorporate your teachings and wait at least 24 hours to be more mindful of all purchases). I almost bought another pair of jeans on sale but I have a pair I love and I wear them whenever I want to wear jeans so I am resisting. Hope your day is going well.
First of all, I just have to say that I love your blog and your thoughts on fashion and being more conscious about clothing choices. That being said, clicking on a lot of links through your blog brings up clothing made of a lot of synthetics…polyester, viscose, rayon, modal etc. which it seems aren’t the most eco-friendly to produce in the first place. Moreover, I find that clothing made with these fabrics are less durable and look old and pilled within a few wears, making you have to shop even more to replace them. I’ve been trying to buy more items made of natural fabrics especially wool and linen since they naturally have wicking and cooling properties that make them feel good against the skin. I also feel somewhat cheated when clothing manufacturers place a hefty price tag on synthetics since I feel that many use them because they are cheaper. Perhaps it’s because I’m a knitter and hate any acrylic mixed into my yarn? Reading several fashion blogs, it doesn’t seem like many people pay attention to or even care about fabric choices these days and hence, clothing manufacturers keep on cranking out clothing made from the same cheap synthetics. Would love to hear your thoughts about this.
Hi Aileen! thanks for your comment.
i do try VERY hard to pay attention to fabrication when i choose items for myself, and to feature, in addition to considering where a garment is made, and taking into consideration my knowledge of the company, ethics, sustainability, etc. but no one is perfect 😉
for activewear, i’m ALWAYS in synthetics or blends, nothing wicks sweat like nylon/spandex – nearly all of my activewear is by SOLOW, which is made in the US, and their eclon (nylon) is bluesign certified sustainable (“eliminates harmful substances right from the beginning of the manufacturing process and sets and controls standards for an environmentally friendly and safe production”) – so i feel rather good about that…and i recommend SOLOW any chance i get, posting about it here all the time…
in general, i try to understand why a certain textile is being used in something – for denim, i do prefer 100% cotton, but i also like a little stretch, and you need spandex or lycra for that. for gray heathered items of clothing, i know they will have to be a polyester blend. i accept that usually, for the look/feel i’m going for in a particular garment. and i understand that i will need to take more special care of the piece than i would something that is 100% cotton.
i absolutely steer clear of “cheap” polyester tops, dresses, etc., that are simply made to be as cheap as possible, but still look like silk or a more “expensive” fabric, but i understand the need for blends in a lot of circumstances, and i love the feel/drape of rayon/viscose.
rayon is actually not synthetic, it’s wood-pulp fiber, and viscose is a semi-synthetic blend of rayon and “solution of cellulose xanthate produced by treating dissolving pulp with aqueous sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide used to spin the viscose rayon fiber”. rayon and viscose are manufactured, and some processes are more environmentally harmful than others, but the same (or worse) can be said for cotton production and bamboo in fact (which is often touted as a very eco-friendly material, when it can be very chemically intensive to produce). in fact, i would consider conventional cotton production worse in terms of environmental impact (water use, pesticides, etc.), since it’s on such a larger scale than manufactured fibers.
as for durability – i find variations in cotton also, and linen, depending on the brand/manufacturer, so i am not so quick to say that specific fabrics are higher quality than others. of course, it also depends very much on how we care for our clothing – i dry very little of my stuff, and i think that helps it last longer. i find viscose in particular to be very sturdy and hold up well to lots of wear/washing, depending on the manufacturer, of course.
as for pilling, 100% cashmere pills also, as does wool. And of course poly blends will pill…some worse than others. i just accept it as the nature of the item.
Ultimately, in trying to be more “conscious” i try to be more aware – and encourage others to be aware also. Being aware doesn’t necessarily always mean making the RIGHT choice all the time, though, and that’s not what I’m asking. even making the wrong choice with your eyes open is better than blindly consuming without having any knowledge at all….
So, speaking for myself, personally, i try to prioritize natural materials as much as possible (but even that’s not enough, given how environmentally detrimental conventional cotton is) and pay attention to everything about the garment I’m buying, including knowing more about the company, where they manufacture, and who makes my clothes. Of course, ultimately, i would consider it ideal to have a wardrobe full of linen, organic cotton, hemp, and some rayon or lyocell, but for right now, I’m just trying to make the best choices i can given various constraints and desires. and that’s all i ask anyone else to do…
I ordered these joie sandals in white: http://www.shopbop.com/plage-avalon-band-slides-joie/vp/v=1/1593372442.htm
as well as a madewell linen tee and some slouch pants by The Great (which were sort of an impulse purchase). my favorite part is that everything is returnable so i can take advantage of the sale and still change my mind. i’m waiting excitedly for everything to arrive!
haha! i ordered this dress by The Great. also, as an impulse purchase…although not really, because i’d been thinking about it for awhile. then when i did my “black dress collection” post i realized that i really did want a non-black dress. so grey 😉 well, i got it and it is AMAZING. i love the brand, and the pieces all look so wearable.
let us know how you like the pants! i LOVE THEM. of course 😉
Oh really?! I love that gray dress and actually considered it too, but I just got the Oak maxi dress in gray (as per your rec!) and it is SO similar looking. I do love the gray Oak dress – i wear it all the time around the house – but worry a little that I’m sort of wearing a nightgown outside. Perhaps I should belt it when I go out…? It’s very yummy though.
I’ll report back on the pants!
yes, they are very similar…but i only have the oak in black, and wanted a grey dress 😉
wear the oak dress out!!!!!! every single time i wear it i get compliments, and at least one person asks where to get it…depending on which part of town i’m in though, haha…
you can belt it definitely, i wore it like that once, but belts are just too fussy for me LOL.
the great dress is different in that it’s a bit slimmer and longer, and the neckline is much more closed – i ordered a size 1, mostly because they didn’t have any 2s left – but it was a good thing, actually, because the 2 would have been WAY too big and long on me. the slits up the side and the knot actually make me look tall(er) i think, and my husband doesn’t hate it!!
ah!! great minds 🙂 i love that cardigan…so tempting for me, but i do have a couple gray cardigans i love already, so…
i love that you waited 24 hours! hopefully that means that this purchase will be an especially good one !
I love the cardigans! I also really love the Giles and Brother stuff but I don’t like that it’s imported from China. Grechen what do you think – I’m in the market for a simple cuff bracelet like the railroad spike cuff by G+B, love that one, but are there any made in USA jewelry makers that you like and would recommend? LOVE the rose gold options!
Nice, very thoughtful and reasoned response – exactly what I expect from you & your blog! If anything is absolute, it’s that there are never absolutes, right? (except death & taxes 😉
haha! so true, kelly 🙂
oh!! yes…this one : http://www.shop-aro.com/product/krysos-chandi-ila-cuff/ – i’m thinking of getting it myself…and it’s 15% off with code grechen15 🙂 there are also some nice ones, a little less heavy, at zady – also 15% off with code grechen15
keep meaning to do a post on jewelry made in the US…i’ll have one next week 🙂
oh, and catbird is offering 15% off until 10 am tomorrow morning with code ITSASECRET – they never do codes!
Just an update on the pants by The Great: they are certainly a yummy material, but the sizing is a bit off (i should have ordered multiples to try on). I am always weary when pants are sized 0, 1, 2, 3. I followed their chart and got the 2 (i am a 28 waist), and they are too big – or maybe i just would have preferred sizing down aesthetically. I would have been sad about it if they were black, but since they are a color that I wouldn’t normally gravitate to anyway, I’m okay sending them back!
