No not really…I just give up on trying to resist the urge of James Perse – I am powerless against every new season. Case in point – I would like every single one of these pieces in my closet NOW:
As much as I try, or at least think I should try, to get away from jersey/cotton (ahem, James Perse) making up the majority of my wardrobe, I can’t do it. And honestly, I don’t see the point anymore. I did make an effort to acquire more silk and/or “structured” pieces the last year, and those are the things that hardly ever see the light of day (my Equipment silk blouse…Mociun wrap dress…). Which also isn’t a bad thing. One needs to have some pieces that are appropriate for more “formal” or “fancy” occasions, and now that I have a super-special Anniversary dinner coming up (in San Francisco!!), I am acutely aware that I have NOTHING TO WEAR. (one silk blouse does not an outfit make)
As I’ve always been a proponent of the cost-per-wear method when choosing what to spend money on, I’ve had a hard time justifying a classic black blazer, a “LBD” (in something other than jersey cotton), or any sort of cocktail dress simply because I’d probably only wear the items in question 1 or 2 times a year. Not that I don’t WANT to wear said items more often, assuming the occasion presents itself, but they usually don’t. So I pass over the classic, tailored pieces in favor of the casual, more slouchy things I spend every day in. And then end up with nothing to wear.
Sometimes I try to look for things that have the potential to “cross over” and do double duty as casual & “fancy,” but that tends to work better in theory than in practice. Somehow no matter how much I try to “dress up” an outfit, it always manages to look casual. I’m just a casual girl I guess…
Anyway, instead of shopping, I am going to try to work with what I already have in my closet to find something nice to wear for our first anniversary dinner in August. Maybe I’ll try them out on you guys first…
Do you have a versatile wardrobe? Or do you have to shop for occasions?
I tend to be pretty casual in my day-to-day life: ankle-cropped jeans, booties, ballet flats or flat sandals, a tee and maybe a cardi if it’s cold. But when it comes to going-out on a “date” with my hubby, I like to dress it up a little more, altho, it totally depends on where we’re going: white jeans, special top (Equipment, or a slouchy tee and a statement necklace), and wedges. We have gone to a few galas (that sounds so snobby!!) since we’ve moved to the East End, but I had to go out and buy special for those. Just in case my paparazzi showed up…;-)
I will say this – I have two of the slub cotton panel blouses from James Perse in white and iron and I wear them ALL THE TIME. It’s the same with my three Inhabit button down cotton cardigans – they are a constant. And they have certainly paid for themselves with all the wear they get. But honestly, most of my dresses are cotton, they can be dressed up or down. I own very little “dressy” clothing.
Hi Grechen! That is one thing I love about my wardrobe…my collection of silk dresses from Anthro. I am usually good to go in and find something for every occasion and that makes getting ready for events stress free.
