where’s Dagny? 🙂
In case you didn’t see on Instagram…I’ve been posting daily outfits there, as well as here this week, what do you think? I’ve enjoyed it, but will add in more “shopping” posts going forward, and maybe go back to three outfit posts a week? And put the rest on Instagram?
Shopping
Besides using my store credit earlier this week at Tenoversix, I haven’t bought anything fashion-related this week. Â Yay! Â I haven’t even used my $20 off $50 VIB “gift” at Sephora or 20% off at Ulta.
Read/Watched/Did
Andrea has a really good post on Grana this week, looking into their ethics, etc. I have been very hesitant to qualify them as a “sustainable” or ethical company, and still am (along with Everlane, incidentally, I’m not entirely sure they qualify anymore either, there are so many MORE ethical/sustainable companies out there), but I appreciate the “inside” look she provided. Â And I love the cashmere cardigan on her…
Thank you thank you thank you to Leah from Stylewise blog for featuring SLOWRE as one of her “Five Innovations that Make Ethical Shopping Easier.” Â I am beyond honored to have been included in such a great list.
I binged on Rectify’s latest season last weekend and early this week (I’m all caught up now) and can’t recommend it enough. Â I cry during EVERY. Single. Episode though, it’s that powerful. Â Then again, I am quite an emotional person, so take that with a grain of salt. Â I finally finished Narcos and am also watching Luke Cage. Â Tried to pick up The Fall again – I didn’t realized there was a new season – I thought it was over? – and am finding it tough to get back into.
I’m reading The Sympathizer and really enjoy it, although it’s slow-going since I haven’t had a lot of time to just sit and read lately.
When I do read…and my latest Lindsay Hampton mug (featured in my Not a Gift Guide)
I started a 2000 piece puzzle last weekend (hence the binging on Rectify) and I’m no where close to finishing. Â It’s a beast and takes up my entire dining room table…
Ate/Cooked
I made the molasses cookies I talked about last week via Goop, and they are really GOOD, but not so much a cookie as a gloopy mess; they taste wonderful, but don’t look very pretty.  And they’re very fatty (from the olive oil and almond flour) which makes it hard to eat very many at a time –  a good thing.
I also made this Brussels Sprouts Alfredo (vegan & gluten-free) recipe via The Minimalist Baker this week. Â It was excellent – even my husband liked it! Â I would use a lot less arrowroot than she calls for (mine was sticky/goopy), and I did use regular cheese since I already had some (we’re not vegan all the time) instead of vegan cheese. Â I’m absolutely going to try more of her recipes. Â Thanks to Andrea for turning me onto her!
And finally…
This is REALLY it for the wardrobe audit/Everlane giveaway guys!! I will close the entries on Sunday, December 11th and choose a winner for the clutch. Â It will take me a little time to consolidate all the answers and publish the results, but so far, I’m finding all of your audits/comments VERY enlightening and interesting.
Also, please welcome Only Child as a sponsor/partner of Grechen’s Closet!! I love Haley’s designs (simple, versatile, easy) and that she uses deadstock fabrics (recycling FTW!).  She also designs and sews everything herself in Oakland, CA.  Take a look at her most recent pieces  – this Madelyn coat is amazing, and even better that it’s named after my niece (haha, not really, but I’ve never seen another Madelyn spelled that way!), and I’m intrigued by the Reeves vest with large pockets.  Show Only Child some love, and if you sign up for her email newsletter you’ll get 10% off your first order.
Speaking of vegan cooking, have you checked out the Oh She Glows Cookbook? It’s my cooking bible right now, and her soups are PERFECT for cold weather.
i have heard of it, but don’t have it. will check it out. for soup, i usually just default to my throw-everything-in vegetable soup, or some sort of squash blended up LOL, boring, but reliable!! thanks!
I love Only Child. She’s local to me and I have 2 of her pieces. Had to take a pause on buying more! So glad you’re partnering with her.
Instagram plus posts are great by me. I’ve become inundated with emails and I’ve found it hard to catch up (as I’m sure you can tell! I’m still here!) so I find Instagram pretty easy.
Shopping…I used my VIB credit to get a Tom Ford Boys and Lips (?) lipstick, and a bunch of stuff for my daughter. Not to mention that I’ve purchased almost all of my Christmas gifts either locally or online. We don’t have a mall, so it’s individual shops. I like that! Plus, my foot is in a giant, bulky, weighty boot because of a torn Achilles for the foreseeable future….sigh….
Watching TV…it’s pledge drive time at PBS, so TV sucks at my house. We rented a very quirky movie tonight from the library….”Swiss Army Man”…funny/sad/weird. Still trying to focus long enough to finish reading “The Goldfinch.” Damned depression, anyway.
Speaking of cooking, made a Quiche Lorraine with added spinach and mushrooms last night and an absolutely delicious mushroom, parm, spinach risotto tonight.
Funny story: one of my friends teaches the 7th and 8th grade kids at Sunday School and they’re talking about the Christmas story right now. She asks them, “So, does anyone know what ‘Virgin’ means?” One kid raises his hand and says, “Aren’t those people who don’t eat meat?” 🙂 My husband has been laughing about “The Vegan Mary” ever since!!!
Live our twinsie VKOO scarves!
It was my pleasure to feature SLOWRE! You really innovated the whole idea of a secondhand ethical fashion marketplace (Bead & Reel copied you).
You’re cracking me up today. First the candle video now vegan Mary. Kids are hilarious 😉
Hi Grechen-
First sending a shout out to MAma V. above who hurt her foot- yes you are a crack up! feel better xoxo
I’ve been shopping for others mostly but did choose some new workout stuff that is still in my basket, the Friends & Family is over-so deciding whether to purchase or not. I have been in search of a few new lip colors to cheer me up and change from neutrals. Any suggestions please let me know.
Reading – a new on by ALexander McCall Smith another Isabel Dalhousie mystery called, The Novel Habits of Happiness
Went to see Manchester By The Sea w/ Casey Affeck worth seeing
I want a Dagny dog for Christmas!
i’m no good at “non-neutral” lip colors LOL, but val mentioned in a comment above that she bought some Tom Ford lipstick via Sephora recently. maybe she’ll have some suggestions for good colors? she’s always great at making suggestions for me!
Thank you, Gena! That’s awfully kind of you. I’d love to help you pick out a new lip color! I have worked as a professional makeup artist, so it’s fun to help women look and feel confident in their beauty. Answer a couple of quick questions for me: 1) Hair color (Compare it to a celebrity if that helps), Eye color, and skin tone (light, medium, olive, deep…) 2) Do you have a preference for the type of formula? (Matte, Creamy, shimmer?) 3) What are your top 3 wardrobe colors?
I’ll come up with a few ideas for you, Gena. 🙂
(My husband and I saw “Manchester by the Sea” tonight and I loved it, but I feel like I had the stuffing kicked out of me.)
Thx, Grechen! You’re the BEST! <3
