Wearing/Buying
Best. Outfit. Ever. I couldn’t have been more comfortable or happy yesterday with this outfit.
Side note: I might be able to live without pockets in pants. It’s really only an issue at home when I need to carry my phone around with me from office to kitchen to wherever. And if I’m out, I have a bag with me, so who needs pockets? I do demand pockets on my person when I travel, for phone, papers, etc., but otherwise, I think I’m starting to realize I can get by without them.
That said,
I placed an order yesterday for the Elizabeth Suzann Clyde culottes in black, size 8 short – WITH POCKETS. They’re a holiday gift from my mom 🙂 I definitely want another pair of Florence pants, probably linen, but before that I wanted to try the clyde culottes, because I do love the clyde pockets…
I waffled A LOT on sizing before settling on 8 short. I love that Liz is trying to really accommodate sizes and provide detailed fit information but it’s almost paralyzing to decipher! For me anyway. My bust is 33.5″, waist 29.5″ and hips 41″ which puts me pretty firmly in size 8, but my older Clydes are a size 6 and after wearing for a while, they stretch a ton. But from reading reviews, it seems that the culottes are slimmer at the hips, so hopefully I won’t be disappointed and have to exchange them. It’s so stressful ordering ES because of the wait time to exchange.
Also, the Rhodes sweater is coming back on 12/12 for $285 in three colors up to size XL. I almost returned this sweater after I bought it earlier this year, but it’s turned out to be a great addition to my wardrobe. I’m wearing a medium, so honestly, I think it runs pretty small, but it fits like I’d want it to: perfect length, and beautiful at the waist/arms/etc. It’s not always the easiest piece to wear, you have to pair it with the right bottoms, and the silk florence pants are it. Hopefully the Clyde culottes will work well with this sweater also. And if I needed more warmth, I could easily throw my Rebekkah kimono over top and a scarf.
After my denim post this week and watching Liz’s story on Instagram featuring ES staff wearing Sig 4 pieces and showing us what she bought (and making me want literally EVERYTHING), I wonder why I even bother with jeans anymore. Really. I do love them, but they’re so much trouble for me, and I don’t wear them as much as I used to. I am happier lately wearing dresses or any of my ES pants than I am wearing jeans. In her comment on the post, Mustard joked about the “No Jeans Club” and I think I’m about ready to join. Who’s with us??
I haven’t received any of my orders from the weekend yet, ugh. Hopefully everything will arrive today and I’ll be able to provide some feedback on my JP sale purchases and you can too! Speaking of the JP sale, they’re adding new items to the sale in the morning (Saturday), so it’s worth taking a look again – sometimes they add some really great pieces towards the end! (sadly free shipping is no longer available though)

Nothing very interesting, sadly. No time lately…Any suggestions??
Doing
Tomorrow, Leo and I are headed out on a road trip. We’re driving to Orlando (stopping in Mississippi Saturday night), Leo’s driving to Atlanta on Monday, I’m flying to Atlanta from Orlando on Wednesday, and then we’re driving back home the following Saturday. Phew. Long story, but he had to evict his tenant from the condo in Atlanta last month, and has decided now (finally) to try and sell it since it’s empty, and is going to try and deal with that ASAP. And since we didn’t get to see my dad and step-mom over Thanksgiving, we’re taking a not-so-little detour on the way, down to Orlando to see them for a little while.
I’m excited, but it’s a whirlwind trip!! And lots of driving…
I hope you have a great weekend!!
i too am wearing my rhodes sweater today (same color – size large although i am usually a s/m in tops!). it is so yummy and soft – the only wool i have ever been able to wear directly on my skin with zero itch. i’m wearing it with my imogene and willy high rise jeans, but you’re making me want to put on my own silk florence pants!
i will say, i was so excited about the clyde culotte when it was first announced, but over time i have become more hesitant. i am weary of the seam down the center, and also of the extra crop (i want something ankle or full length). i always wanted a canvas florence pant (currently have linen and silk), so i was hoping these would be exactly that, just with pockets. but i cannot wait to see the culotte on you – always so helpful!
I just sold my Rhodes mockneck in Large and I was surprised to find I’ve been missing it since shipping it out even though I have broad shoulders and a long torso, making it extra cropped and unflattering unless I had the “right” pants, and I’m on the fence about owning pieces that depend so exclusively on other pieces to fit well. I wish it were about 2″ longer — that would make it a great cropped length on me and would definitely be a no-brainer as I think it’s a perfect layering sweater.
I am totally on board with the no-jeans club and as I keep swaying towards more high-rising, looser-legged pants, I might consider doubling-back and re-buying the Rhodes in black… time (and my impulses) will tell!
I LOVE this outfit. Very flattering proportions on you Grechen.
I feel the same about denim, which is why I’d like to eventually get to having just a few pairs. I wear jeans to work maybe once a week now (vs. daily). I prefer dresses and looser pants now. When I travel I do end up in denim quite a bit as it is easy to wear multiple times without washing and is easy to pair with a coat and boots.
If you do feel like pockets are handy at home, try a little apron with front pockets. When I lived in a two story house I often had one on constantly for the pockets. I kept my phone and dog treats in the pockets. If I was cooking something I had a clip on timer that I’d clip to the apron.
I stick my phone in my bra if I don’t have pockets (usually not in public, but there have been times…) I can’t be the only one, right? 😉
I am actually wearing jeans to work today! Only because I have no other warmish blue pants and I wanted to wear a blue striped shirt. I suppose I could have worn khaki, but I thought I’d try to wear denim more. Meh.
Good luck selling the condo! I think Leo is Jewish (certainly his son is if he had a bar mitzvah last year?) but my mom and a couple of her friends have had great luck selling houses that are decorated for Christmas. My mom actually heads to Florida next week to help a friend stage/prep her house to go on the market and the holiday theme is one reason they want to hurry….
I am down with no jeans! I can’t find any that fit the way I want. I’m also over all the distressing—at my age it looks like I’m trying to hard!
Reading: The Abundance of Less: Lessons in Simple Living from Rural Japan by Andy Couturier (good read for when you are busy since each chapter is a unique person).
Love this outfit on you—it’s all I want in my clothes these days…chic, but most importantly, comfortable!
oh, very interesting suggestion! he would hate it though, he really dislikes (strongly) christmas decorations LOL
i have never put my phone in my bra. mostly because it wouldn’t fit or stay there! i have put keys there though, in a sports bra, if i’m going out walking or something 😉
now that i’m thinking more about “no jeans” i remember why I like them – for a “neutral” color that goes with everything. i don’t like all black most of the time, unless different textures are involved (like with this outfit), and jeans are a nice palette for literally anything. although someone on instagram mentioned that she uses her navy silk florence pants as a denim alternative – which is a very interesting idea!
thank you tania!
i have a wonderful linen apron a friend gave me when we moved it – it crosses in the back and has two front pockets 🙂 it’s so good. i just forget to wear it because i’ve never had an apron before!
that’s true about denim being easier to get multiple wears out of. but interestingly enough, i wore these pants 4-5 times without washing and they looked good as new! of course i didn’t spill anything on them or anything, but i’m impressed.
oh, i’m totally with you on that – i don’t generally like having things in my closet that I can’t wear with everything else in my closet, but i’m not sure that’s so important to me anymore. i’m not trying to have a capsule wardrobe or anything – i do try to keep it small-ish – so i can have a few things that don’t work with EVERYTHING. especially if it’s a really good piece 🙂
the rhodes sweater just works well for my body type anyway, since i have a short torso and it’s very hard for me to find pieces that ARE actually cropped on me! i’m glad i gave this one a try. but i’m going to try and NOT order another one LOL
you’re right about that front seam. but in the pictures/outfits i’ve seen with the culottes the seam isn’t really noticeable – not like it is on my clyde work pants anyway. and on my work pants, the seam pulls a little bit, which i find a little annoying, but the pants are so amazing, i don’t care…
thanks for the book suggestion debi!
i do like a little distressing, but there’s a fine line 😉
Who knew my no jeans sentiment would strike such a chord?!!
Looking forward to your review of the Clyde culottes, too. I’ve been toying with the idea of a pair of linen Florence pants for when it gets warm again, but I’m not sure I want to give up pockets.
Best outfit ever, you look amazing in this! I’m totally copying you.
Personally, I actually dislike jeans a lot but try to wear them every now and again. Now that skinnies are out I’m happier, but I still love basically any pants more than jeans. Silk wide-legs, harem pants, peg pants — any of them! I say, who needs jeans???
Hmm, I dunno. 501s feel like they were tailor-made for me (vintage ones at least, not so much the newer versions). I love the idea of pull-on pants like ES’s but I have a weird psychological block about elastic waists. They always feel like lounge clothes… which I guess is a good thing? I just like a little structure.
That said, I keep being tempted by ALL THE CLYDES. But — when I read Instagram reviews (esp for the new culottes) I hear a lot about “shimmying” to get into them. Which, like, I don’t shimmy. I absolutely will not wear something that is difficult to get on, or difficult to get up and down in the bathroom. Grechen — did you size up in your Clydes to avoid the shimmying, or is it not an issue for you? Are other people sizing down or something? I know that you usually buy based on what fits your legs/calves, and I do the same, so maybe you can be of some help here… I’m so nervous about ES sizing, even with the new charts, argh. The $$$ and lead times sorta raise the stakes…
Lucky you with your short torso and being able to pull the Rhodes off! On STES I got many tips to check out the Han Starnes Mockneck sweater (Which I’ve been lusting after since it launched) and it sounds like a good, longer alternative to the Rhodes….
yes, that sweater looks very similar – and a little longer than ES…i do find alpaca to be pretty itchy though, until i wear it a while.
i got the rib sweater recently and it’s wonderful, but maybe a little big on me (got the medium because that’s all there was available when i bought it!)
loving han starnes lately…really thinking about the cardigan too 🙂
my old clydes are a size 6 and they are a teeny bit tight on my hips at first, but loosen up almost immediately, until they become quite loose. but from what i read about the culottes/new sizing, they’re a bit slimmer in the hips, and the fabric is different, so i sized up to make sure i could get them on. but i am worried about them stretching out too much. i don’t necessarily want to have to “shimmy” too much to get them on, but at the same time, if that keeps them snug on my hips, and holds all my bits in, i don’t mind as much 😉
I love this outfit! I resisted the Rhodes sweater before but I might cave this time!
