Wearing/Buying
Here’s another item I had in my 2018 Wardrobe Plan: a belted sweater. Honestly, I expected this “wish” to pass me by again, but when this sweater came through for slowre I bought it for myself and I’m really pleased with it. I’ve never had camel wool before, and honestly it’s nice and warm and softer than I would have thought. I’m so glad I was able to check an item off my list with something secondhand 🙂 I do still have some of the shipment of the “vintage” Mongolian cashmere I got in available – here’s another camel wool cardigan which is really wonderful (although it is thicker and maybe a little more “abrasive” than mine. Which I think can be taken care of with more washing and wearing. I thought this one was a little itchy when I first put it on, but after a wash and air dry, it seems to have softened up a lot).
Speaking of my wardrobe plan, I’m crossing the 6397 shorty jeans in grey off my list in favor of a straighter mid-rise pair, probably this pair by Goldsign, if I decide to get another pair of jeans at all. I am going to be selling my other shorty jeans next week and am just not liking that style on me much anymore, plus they’re just too big all around on me, so no need to add a new pair.
I’m getting Grechen’s Codes back up and running now, and my goal is to post one sale item, or item with a coupon code per day, with a focus (like here) on independent designers, boutiques, and sustainable design. And in case you don’t get the slowre newsletter, clearance is on now, and this is the last month these items will be in stock, so if you’ve been interested in anything, now’s the time!
Reading/Watching
I finished The Crown, and I was sorry for it to end. I also quickly watched The End of the F***ing World and thought it was also very good. Well done, and “sweet” sort of, while also very distressing. Finally, I’m catching up on Divorce (on HBO), which I watch mostly because I’m obsessed with SJP, but also now because Thomas Hayden Church is SO FUNNY, in a perfectly serious way. I highly recommend it.
I’m reading Pachinko, which someone recommended here once, and I’m really enjoying it. Sadly, I’m going to be reading much less since we moved; our local library here doesn’t loan kindle books! Which is stunning, really, but what can I do? I looked into getting a City of Dallas library card but that costs as much as just buying every book I want this year…sigh. I’m going to have to pace myself I guess.
Marketing is simply a way to get people to buy what they don’t want or don’t need.
Doing
I’d really love to not work so much this weekend, as I did last weekend, but I don’t think I’ll be able to take very much time off; I got a shipment of Emerson Fry sweaters in yesterday to get up on Slowre and some other great pieces coming in today (ES anyone??)!! We’re having a nice dinner with friends Saturday night and then Super Bowl on Sunday, so I will be eating all the food.
How was your week? What do you have planned this weekend?
Must decide if I want the Fisher rain jacket you have. I’ll show to my husband. I don’t *need* but might be nice. I don’t like a trench and just got rid of my old car coat style spring rain coat I never wore because it was pastel. When it rains, I tend to wear a lime green LLBean goretex coat I’ve had since 2007. I love it, but it’s a bit more outdoorsy than I’d like for most of my travel….
No big weekend plans. Library today so I have new books 🙂 Though I’m finishing up a library kindle book first. So sad your new library doesn’t participate – lobby for it!! I got some new food and pantry storage containers so I’m doing some cleaning and purging this weekend…
The Dallas library charges for a library card?! I’ve never heard of that.
Many do if you don’t live in that jurisdiction 😉 (if you live there, you pay local taxes, but if not…)
oh, yes, since i don’t live in the CITY of dallas. i live in dallas county, but just outside the city limits. and i mean JUST OUTSIDE by like a half mile 🙁 my local city library only does electronic books for the nook. i was so shocked!!
I’ve been slowly working my way through The Crown season 2, savoring it. But I only have one or two episodes left so I’ll probably finish them tonight. It’s so good! What a bummer your library doesn’t offer Kindle books, when I had a Kindle I loved that option. I just picked up The Woman in Cabin 10 from the library today, and am excited to start it this weekend.
My week has felt hectic and I’m not even sure why! But I’m starting an elimination diet of sorts for the month of February, so I’m feeling…weird. Haha. I think I’m coming down with a cold though, so this weekend will likely be a lot of rest – I don’t want to be sick!
I’m so happy to hear that you’re getting Grechen’s Codes up and running again. That’s how I found you in the first place so many years ago!
I’m making a conscious decision to purchase more second hand clothing, and I’ve found some good stuff. It’s something new for me, since I have less than positive memories of wearing lots of hand-me-downs as an adolescent. Now, I think the Emerson Fry stuff sounds pretty interesting!
Not really doing anything this weekend or watching the Super Bowl because I can’t stand either team. But I will find another reason to snack. I finished up Season 2 of The Crown, as well and hate to have to wait for Season 3. Started watching Dark but the constant barrage of creepy music was too much for us. I get music to enhance scenes, but non-stop? Ugh. Now we’ve moved on to Dicte, a Danish police procedural for the most part. It’s growing on me.
I think that’s odd, too. In NY state (and other states I’ve lived in) there is inter-library loan so you can borrow from ANY library in the state as long as you have a valid library card.
ES on Slowre? Yeeeee! 🙂
Grechen, I was really surprised by this, too. Austin has inter-library lone to other libraries in the area, like Pflugerville. You should ask them about that. I can’t imagine a library charging for users. That’s like the exact opposite of what a library is supposed to be!
I live in a poor county in NC. We have a time-limited ability to get library cards for free in two nearby counties. Otherwise, you pay. If they get you interlibrary loans, you pay. There is no money in the county budget to provide these services for free. (I use my library cards to get books online and occasionally will visit a neighboring county to check out a book if it’s something I’ve been looking for – I have to spend my time & gas $ to get the book vs paying the library to have it mailed….
Libraries are often the bottom of the food chain when it comes to state/county/town budget discussions. We have a decent Friends of the Library group (I’ve been a board member in the past) but there just isn’t a lot of disposable income here to boost it too far. Our library has prioritized funding children’s programs with most of the Friends funding.
All this to say it’s far from a given that you can get anything you want for free at a public library 😉
Hoyaheel, I’m shocked that people in some areas of our country have to PAY to use a library! I think it was naive of me to believe that people in poor counties would have access to equal services. I should’ve known better. Reading, one of the most important things in pulling people out of poverty, and its access is denied! (Sorry, off on a tangent…I used to work in literacy programs.)
That thing with the library really got to me, so I started doing some research. I found one good site that seems to have some options, read the comments for one about Houston Libraries offering all Texas resident a free library card. Might be some possibilities there.

haha! thank you for that!
i’m going to look and see if i can get interlibrary loan privileges for e-books through my local library, and otherwise, might consider one of the options above.
