Maison Martin Margiela first caught my eye a few years ago when you could really only find it online at Aloha Rag. They still have a great selection, but now, eLuxury is also carrying the new Fall collection.
His designs are characterized as “successfully transforming the mundane and banal into beauty,” which I suppose is valid. I find his collections to be somewhat minimalist (similar this season to Alexander Wang), structured (although there is more “slouch” in his pieces this season than previously), and always cohesive.
This season’s pieces are much more wearable than last season’s; I actually like everything. But what strikes me most about it, is that nearly every look and item can easily be re-created for much less money. For example:
This bracelet is $195:
Now, it won’t be the same, or last as long, but you could just string paper clips together yourself to make a bracelet. Just a thought. Anyway, it’s such a trend that it doesn’t need to last very long…
Laminated Lace Clutch – $425
This is honestly very cool, I love the concept, but with a little creativity, you could probably find some lace fabric and figure out a way to make a small pouch or wallet for $10 instead of $425.
Tilted square dress – $745
I may be wrong about this, but it looks relatively easy to recreate this look with a large rectangle of fabric, strategically pinned or sewn together. I don’t think the look is incredibly flattering, but it might be fun to try. But NOT for $745.
I see Maison Martin Margiela’s Fall collection as a fabulous source of inspiration, but nothing is compelling enough to get me to shell out the big bucks…what do you think?
