I would consider Helmut Lang to be James Perse’s “edgier” little sister, no? Or, Helmut Lang is to NYC as James Perse is to Los Angeles. How’s that for an analogy? 😉 Perhaps Helmut Lang is slightly more polished than Rag & Bone, and more “sophisticated” than James Perse…but they’re all very similar, really. Which is what draws me to them.
I only own a couple of pieces from the HELMUT line (the sweatshirt jacket below and a pair of leggings), but I love them both and am anxiously awaiting fall so I can wear them again. But what really intrigues me about the fall 2013 collection is all the leather details. I’ve never been much for leather on my person (I have a leather jacket that I hardly ever wear), but I’d like to try out a sweater or sweatshirt with leather details, or even a pair of leggings/jeans with leather patches this fall – go a little out of my comfort zone…

What’s inspiring you for fall?
I really love this aesthetic, and have a couple of HL sweaters that are faves. Waiting to see what comes in for fall. I have one jacket from Theory with leather sleeves purchased a few months ago, so feel as though I have that trend covered. Wouldn’t mind a leather tee, though.
I agree that all of those brands fall under the “minimalist” umbrella, which I love. I find that James Perse tends to be the most affordable for me, so that’s what I stick with. But I’ve been searching for Helmut pieces on ebay or sale sites, and lately, I’m also into Raquel Allegra. I love the leather Helmut sweatshirt, but I don’t look great in a crew neck. (Can you say, “Hello linebacker!!”)
i love that theory jacket you have – yes, a leather tee would be fun i think – can’t imagine I’d wear it TOO often, but I am starting to like the idea.
yes, JP tends to be what i gravitate too also (obviously!) because it’s more affordable. and fits my lifestyle better in general – more casual.
and you read my mind, i’m obsessed with raquel allegra lately too, she is my next “installment” of fall 2013!!!
No shock that I am right there with you guys in a Raquel Allegra phase! I think there is a sweet spot where pretty much all James Perse, the majority of Helmut Lang, the hippest of Eileen Fisher, and the tamest of Rick Owens Lilies clothes overlap (I am picturing a Venn Diagram, haha)… and that sweet spot is where I want to shop!
Sarge, I’m lovin’ the Venn Diagram allusion! So, what I wonder is: Did we just all gravitate to Raquel Allegra on our own, or is there some mysterious “fashion voodoo” that occurred to make us end up there at the same time?!?! 😉
haha. i think we’re all just on the same fashion frequency LOL
