Everlane Luxe sweater cardigan | size medium
Some quick looks at a few Everlane pieces I ordered (using credits in my Everlane account) to try. First, the luxe sweater cardigan. I ordered this in a medium, because I wanted it to be longer and slouchier. I like it. It’s not really exciting, and I sort of wanted it to be. Black cardigans are necessary, I think, and this one is great: good quality, medium-weight, nice sleeves, nice drape, minimal, and an excellent basic. But it’s just SO BASIC. I don’t know how else to describe it. I want texture, side slits, something more from a black cardigan right now. So I think I’ll send this one back. The search continues.

I am VERY conflicted about this sweater. I love the color, and the fit isn’t bad, but it’s a little “off.” It’s not really a throw-on-and-go sweater for me; I can’t wear it with everything in my closet (my skinny jeans, for example), or layer it over a dress or wear it with a skirt – it’s not slouchy enough. It is good for these jeans, and my slouchy Eileen Fisher pants. But I don’t like buying/owning things that don’t work with EVERYTHING in my closet. You know? So, I’m still on the fence about it. It’s sheer, and you can see my black bra through it, which doesn’t really bother me much, it just means it will have to be layered over a cami when the weather cools down.
Everlane striped shirt | size small
Ok. Ugh. SO TORN on this one. If you’ve been with me for a while, you know that I keep trying to find a good striped shirt that I like, and that I like ON ME, and I never have. I seem to have concluded that I like the IDEA of a striped shirt, better than a striped shirt. But the more I look at these pictures, and think about how I could wear this, the more I think I like it. First, the slits on the side go up rather high, and do show some of my skin above my waistband. It’s not so much that it bothers me, but just FYI. It’s a bit longer in the back so I don’t have to worry about anything showing back there, but it is definitely a cropped shirt. Which is weird, because I have a short torso and everything is LONGER on me, but this one on the Everlane models looks “normal”. I don’t get it.
Anyway, I’m not sure if I’ll keep this or not. I’m thinking about it, because I can see myself wearing it sometimes. I don’t have to wear it all the time to get enough out of it, I’m okay with that now, but I want to be sure that if I have it, I’ll wear it, you know?
Please visit the Everlane category here for LOTS more Everlane reviews, and feel free to add your own anywhere you see fit. What have you ordered from Everlane recently? Has anyone received a new ponte piece? I’m interested in the dress, so I may try that one…
Grechen – the jade/green colour is great for you – and you have to love the sweater, too! I love you in the stripes, and yup, that is definitely very short in the torso! It looks great on you – on long-waisted me, forget it.
You sounded unsure about all of the pieces. It doesn’t sound as if they are ” sparking joy” and you should probably send them all back. I like your policy of living with them for a 24 or even a 48 hour period before decided. I suppose if you try styling them with everything else you have, you could end up loving them, but…
Of course, you will do what you want, but you and others have inspired me not to settle for just ok or “I think I can make it work”. I love the idea of striped tops, too, but I just can’t seem to wear them near my face. I do like that green color for your complexion.
If you’re on the fence, it’s probably because it isn’t quite right. It’s hard for me not to buy stuff from places because I have a credit, but I’ve realized I have to be extra careful with purchases I make with a credit than cash.
I recently bought the Everlane slouchy wide leg pant and the air muscle tee. The pants were pretty meh. The tee fabric was a lovely texture, and I liked the cut, but was too sheer, which does bother me. I didn’t order any of the ponte pieces because I have come to the conclusion that Everlane just doesn’t really fit me particularly well.
Also–I am the same way about striped shirts! I have decided that I like the idea of them more than I actually like them on me.
Ugh. I’m not doing so well with my 24 hour rule lately. I am going to return the sweaters, but I’m keeping the striped shirt because I’m wearing it right now 😉
It sparks more joy than the sweaters, that’s for sure. I like the look it imparts, also. Sort it pulled together in a chic way I guess. And it’s a very different look for me, so more interesting.
I love the green color, but not the sweater. I can find better if I really want to. Actually I have already , but it’s ACNE and I don’t want to pay the price for it…so…
Well, i decided to keep the striped shirt. It makes me smile when I put it on so…im wearing it with my Eileen fisher slouchy pants and clogs and I love t he look. It’s different for me, but I’m ready for that I think. I’m sort of bored with the same old same old lately.
Totally with you on the credit issue. It’s definitely easier to make mistakes when I’m using credit as opposed to cash. For me anyway…
I like the basic black cardigan. How is the wool texture – soft? I usually shy away form wool due to it’s scratchiness (is that a word? LoL).
Monica.
It’s very very soft and smooth. Feels more like cotton than wool. You’d never know it was wool…
I love that green color sweater on you, but not the shape – so personally (as if it matters 😉 I’m glad you’re sending it back.
I adore striped shirts, but think I’m totally set this year so no need to buy any more. My challenge is going to be finding some of my scarfs that I want to wear with the stripes. OMG – pattern mixing!!!!
I do like a couple of Everlane’s ponte items – will be interested to read some of your or other commenter reviews as they try them on! I continue to believe that Everlane doesn’t design for my shape, though I can’t confirm since I haven’t actually ordered & tried on their clothing….
Well, I’ll be the contrary voice and say I think the silhouette of that green sweater looks GREAT on you! Not to mention, the colour is perfect for your hair and complexion. You look so lit up in it. I realize your look tends more towards drapey/slouchy/movement-oriented pieces, but perhaps having one or two figure-fit, closely tailored pieces isn’t such a bad thing when/if they do such favours for you. It’s my favourite of the three.
I bet it would look fantastic layered underneath a sleeveless dress, jumper-style…
I just received the ponte short-sleeve tee in the mail. I don’t remember ever owning a ponte piece, so I’m not sure how the quality compares. The fabric does feel nicely luxurious: it’s soft, very smooth, and substantial with a quite a bit of stretch. The fit though is a whole different story. While I’m swimming in the boxy striped tee (medium), which Everlane describes as “boxy fit: hangs off the body”, the ponte tee (also “boxy fit: hangs off the body”) is nearly skin-tight on me (34D). I tried it on with a thin tee underneath and it looked way too close-fitting for my liking. I’m debating whether or not I’ll be reordering a large or an XL (to get that relaxed, boxy fit). Overall, I guess the ponte tee would look nice enough with skinny jeans, I’m just not sure if it qualifies as a “makes me happy” piece of clothing.
I agree with you! And I do like the silhouette on me in general but it could be better. There’s a ton of extra fabric around my waist that’s hard to figure out what to do with. And it’s still too long. The color is divine. I do like it, but I know I won’t be very happy with it for too long, always having to mess with it…
One more thing: I also think the emerald sweater looks fantastic on you!
I just want to say that I love your blog and I really value the openness with which you share your experiences. AND I also love that color green on you – I hope you find a great sweater in that color (that isn’t a million dollars).
thank you so much claire! I will find a better green sweater! i know i will…
If it makes you happy, that’s a good sign to keep it. 😉
I’m glad you found a stripe to make you happy!
Lori, I can’t wear stripes near my face either. Stripes always look better on everyone else but me anyways. I’ve just given up on stripes as a genrally rule & it’s made life easier for me. LOL
I really dig the striped top on you Grechen, looks great! The side openings would be a no go for me though as I would thinking about them too much or worrying that part of the shirt hem was caught up my jeans & thus I would fidget with it to the Nth power.
Really liked the jade color on you too btw, but yeah, the bras howing thru kinda limits its wearability.
I almost ordered the stripe shirt but when the flats I wanted were out of stock I decided to pass. I actually really like this shirt on you – I would totally keep it. Just layer it under a biker jacket and then you will realize how awesome it is! I also really love the green sweater on you – the colour is so good. Again another almost order for me but the scoop neck or u neck whatever they call it was sold out when I decided to pull the trigger. Still I like both of these – upscale basics.
So, here’s my beef with Everlane… They photograph almost all of their tops (sweaters, tees, etc) showing a model wearing a half-tuck. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’d like to know how each and every top looks untucked & hanging – which is the way I wear about 99.9% of my tops. I don’t see many real-life women wearing the half-tuck, so I would really appreciate it if Everlane would help us out by showing us exactly what every top looks like – untucked. C’mon, Everlane… Is it really too much to ask for?
By the way… I LOVE your blog! 😉
Loving the stripes and your hair looks amazing… 🙂
thanks jane! i’m keeping the striped shirt, wore it yesterday!! can see myself wearing it different ways, for sure. still not 100% sure about the green sweater. probably sending it back.
thanks!! i agree with you, about some of everlane’s model shots, but i do think they’ve gotten a little better since they first started. after a lot of feedback, of course. that’s one things i do really appreciate about the company; that they listen to feedback and then actually implement it under most circumstances…
i personally, cannot do the half-tuck. and honestly, i don’t understand it most of the time LOL
You know…. I feel *a little* like a jerk after looking back at more of Everlane’s offerings. I’ll admit that there are much fewer of the “half-tuck only” pics than I thought. So, maybe they are trying to do a little better. I’m actually eyeing the Ryan long-sleeve & alas… only half-tuck photos available. Boooo!!! I understand that they’re trying to maintain a certain artsy persona, but I actually have to search through blogs to see what certain items look like on regular people. It should be a *little* easier to figure it out on Everlane’s website. That’s all I’m sayin’!
By the way, thanks for your super helpful reviews… You’re high on my list of “need to find a blog with real person Everlane pics.” So, thanks for that. 🙂
Maybe you found it already, but I have a long sleeve Ryan shirt…and pictures. No half-tuck in sight LOL. I’m not at the computer so I can’t find the post right now but it’ll be in the outfits, ever lane section…
I found it… Thank you!!! Good ol’ “search” box comes in mighty handy. 🙂
Gretchen, if you returned the emerald sweater and are still looking for one, I highly recommend trying Everlane’s mid sleeve sweater instead of the mockneck. I am also short-waisted and found the drape and length to be perfect. I am 5’1” 106 lbs but curvy and ordered the XS.
I am awaiting my new trench coat, about which I’m very excited! I also love the heavyweight tee and my v-necks and u-necks. But beyond that, I’m a bit torn lately. I think I agree with you about the cut of the luxe cardigan. I have it in the taupe-y brown and I find it weirdly difficult to wear at times. I am also not feeling a lot of the clingy stuff since I am rocking a postpartum body right now, so I’m disinclined to order anything that is thin — especially if it cannot be machine washed. Because babies.
I love striped Breton-style shirts. I love sustainable and ethical companies, too, but in the past year or two as I’ve pursued clothing that feels better to my heart, I’ve also encountered a lot of imperfect fit and quality issues that negate the good heart-feels. To that end, I’d suggest that you look at LL Bean or Boden’s breton shirts, under the theory that it’s better to buy less of something not great than a lot of something you won’t wear or that gets schlepped back and forth across the country because you have to return/exchange it fourteen times to get it right. From a small closet/sustainable/ethical standpoint, I seem to be moving in the direction of fewer but better, with better getting a much wider definition. If I have things I love (Everlane tees, Horny Toad dresses, Icebreaker, etc) from great companies? Perfect. If I can make something from Target or Forever 21 or Gap or Boden into seriously slow fashion? That’s okay, too.
absolutely! i hope i say that enough here, but i totally agree – ultimately, it doesn’t matter WHERE your clothing comes from, it could be H&M, Gap, etc., if you wear it and enjoy it – USE it like it was meant to be used, WEAR it and dispose of it only when it’s outlived it’s lifespan – turn it into slow fashion, as you say. i’m not going to say it’s MORE wasteful to buy something sustainable for a lot of money and then NEVER EVER wear it, but it is definitely wasteful to do something, and pointless.
on the topic of striped shirts, i’m not going to actively seek one out – i like this everlane one, and i’m keeping it, and it’s good for me. i don’t need anything else, or the “perfect” striped shirt, because there is no such thing 😉 i’m happy with this one, and thus, am finished searching.
“i don’t need anything else, or the “perfect” striped shirt, because there is no such thing 😉 i’m happy with this one, and thus, am finished searching.”
Ok so this is my downfall with certain items, such as blushes. I love blushes, it’s just my thing I guess. Anyways, I finally find my holy grail blush, so what do I do….yup, keep searching for (and buying) other blushes cause maybe there might be an even more holier grail version than I could have imagined.
I also do this with tee’s when it comes to blue and purple colors. Cobalt blue, royal, navy, sky, robin’s egg, etc. Royal purple, electric, violet, plum, orchid, etc.
I find the perfect shade of blue or purple tee, mark it off my must-have list, only to turn right around and add “find perfect shade of blue or purple tee” on my must-have list.
I can’t seem to get out of this loop. Drives me bonkers.
Hi Grechen! You helped me locate an Alexander Wang Rocco bag a few years back. You loved them as much as I did (I still do and own 6!). I have a bit of a handbag problem. Now, I haven’t really looked over your blog recently, but what are your thoughts on handbags vs. fast fashion? Do they cause as much damage to make to developing countries and the environment? Thoughts? Hope you are doing well! 🙂 PS—-you look fabulous. So glad to see someone blogging that is very fashionable that isn’t 22 years old.
My first experience with Everlane was a bummer and now I would encourage buyers to be skeptical of their size charts and their models’ presentation of the garments. A couple weeks ago I ordered 4 pieces all in size S: Luxe V Neck Sweater, Luxe U Neck Sweater, Cotton Crew Sweater, Cotton V T-Shirt. I measured garments in my own closet, compared them to the size charts, and felt quite safe with my selections.
So I was seriously unhappy when I tried on all items and they were gorgeous but just…SHORT. So I measured them (flat, from high point of shoulder to hem) and every single garment was shorter than the size chart indicated. The Cotton Crew sweater had a high low hem and the chart said 23″ for the front length–it was 21.5″. The Luxe sweaters were each about 1″ short. The Cotton V-Neck t-shirt was closest, but still a half-inch short.
I sent everything back, requesting a waive of my return fee. I was assured the size charts could be relied upon, but because I think they should fix. this. business., I sent photos of the items with my measuring tape on them to prove my point. I was then assured that info would be forwarded to production for review. I will note that customer service was GREAT. I got prompt responses, my return fee waived, and a small credit to my account. So zero complaints on the service front. But still…
I can no longer believe the garment descriptions that claim the models are 5’9″ and wearing size Smalls. There is just no way given how high the size Smalls hit me–I’m 5’6. Either they’re doing the ol’ pin and clip with a larger size or the models are the most accomplished slouchers ever.
I’ll still order again, probably, but only when an inch or so less in length won’t be a deal-breaker.
I just got the cashmere turtleneck in the mail (I ordered the grey donegal in M). I have to say I was a bit disappointed; it will definitely be going back. I was surprised by how thin the material is; it is actually a tiny bit sheer if you wear something dark underneath, and it is not as soft as I expected. The fit is also a bit odd for me (I maybe would have been better off in a small, but I ordered based off my usual u-neck tee size) – Given the slouchiness of the overall cut, I was expecting the neck to be a little roomier, but it is pretty fitted which makes the torso look bulkier.
Definitely not worth the 180$ pricetag for me.
thanks for your input lindsay! i guess the donegal is very different from 100% cashmere – i don’t find my black one thin at all – or at least thinner than their other cashmere. but that is disappointing…
Hi Grechen,
Do you mind me asking what size of the boxy striped Tee you purchased? Love the fit on you and thinking we may be a similar size, I’m struggling over just how over sized the shirt may be be in person!
Thank you!
small! i love the fit of it too, although sometimes wish it was a TEENY bit longer!! but not bigger…
