(Everlane Large Modern Zip Backpack in Reverse Denim)
I may be sort of ambivalent on many of Everlane’s new releases lately, but I do always like to give them a try; I admire the company very much, and appreciate their devotion to transparency. And thanks to a close relationship with Everlane, in addition to referrals via my link, I earn credits there that I use to purchase things and review here for you. So…..I ordered the new modern backpack yesterday.
When Everlane launched their first backpack I was super-excited to get it, but promptly sent it back. I liked it a lot, and knew it would have been practical, but on my black backpack, the straps were white canvas, and I just couldn’t deal with that. So I’ve sort of been waiting and watching to see if they’d fix that so I could order another one. And here we are!

Based on feedback from a reader on this post who mentioned that her black backpack had rubbed off on her clothing, I ordered the reverse denim large version instead of black. I went with the large backpack because it has a padded section for my laptop, which means I wouldn’t have to put it in it’s sleeve for traveling, which is really just an extra hassle. I love their “classic” drawstring/snap backpack, but for security’s sake, and ease of getting into, I decided to go with the modern “zipper” version. I wish the smaller one had a padded laptop section and open side pockets, and was available in the reverse denim; I would have preferred the smaller size, but the large will be good as a carry-on, if not for using at my destination (which I probably wouldn’t anyway – I’ll bring a smaller purse to use daily).
I have a feeling the backpack is going to be HUGE, but there’s really not a very big difference in size from the small, and I think the large will be much more practical overall.
What do you think? Do you have an Everlane backpack? Or will you order a new one?
Happy Monday!!
i have a grey one in the older style and really like it. i actually like the styling better on the old one, with the leather straps that snap close and the closure and everything. i don’t need another one so won’t order this one, but it looks pretty good. i too have mixed results with everlane in general but have some really good pieces that i love.
oh — and yeah i agree about the white canvas straps those are not ideal but i didn’t note them until it was too late so i am stuck with them….. π
I have the previous version of the snap backpack. Like you I’ve had mixed experiences with Everlane, but the backpack is the one thing I truly love. I’ve used it heavily for three years (near daily school/work/travel, always with a laptop) and it’s held up nicely.
The canvas straps didn’t bother me, until I spilled coffee on one π
Though looking at them now, they’re definitely the “weakest link” – lots of fraying at the edges.while the rest of the bag looks great.
I was smitten with the new mini version – I’m getting a smaller work laptop soon and would love to downsize my daily bag. But I didn’t realize until I read your post that it didn’t include the padded laptop compartment or side pockets! So reconsidering. Those lack of features make it far less useful for traveling and work.
yes, i’m disappointed the mini version doesn’t have a laptop section in it. or side pockets! weird…i guess i get that they’re trying to keep it “streamlined” but i think it would have been a GREAT size for every day, but i agree, the lack of those features does make it a bit less practical.
good to hear you’ve loved your backpack π
the straps were the first thing i noticed! but i’m a little obsessive like that LOL
Has anyone else realized that this backpack is almost identical to the basic jansport backpack that people have been using for decades?
haha. so…what are you saying?? π
I tried to browse the other post for the comment regarding the black backpack rubbing off because I just ordered that one! What did they say? π
here’s the comment:
that was the older backpack, but still…i would test it out when you get it for dye transfer just to be safe.
any advice on how to test dye transfer? never done it :p
