Espadrilles! A harbinger of warmer weather, beach vacations and sunshine right alongside baby birds and spring break. I don’t currently have a pair of espadrilles, but in years past, I’ve had a flat pair and a high wedge pair. I love the look of the woven jute/raffia, and I’ve found them to be fairly comfortable, but I never liked the feel of the jute on the sole of my feet; it’s very hot.
I wore my flat pair of espadrilles so much they literally fell apart – the jute came completely unwound. Nowadays, more pairs come with rubber soles and leather or suede insoles, so they’re better made, and should last quite a bit longer than mine did, but I still wouldn’t pay very much for a pair of espadrilles, especially as a shoe with such a short season.
I do love some of the styles designers have come up with this season though; Alexander Wang’s “sneaker” pair is cool, and the criss-cross style by Charlotte Stone is very “now.” Of course Soludos makes a “classic” espadrille at a very reasonable price ($36 for a basic pair) and I love the look of a wedge espadrille by Via Spiga.
What do you think of espadrilles? Do you love them? hate them? Think they’re uncomfortable? Will you buy a pair or pull yours out this season?

I love the look, but they’re definitely a “casual” shoe and I’d pay accordingly, i.e. not much. Even if they’re more well made, the jute gets dirty etc. That said, I do like the lace-up oxford versions I’ve seen around and might get a pair.
I love the way the Vince snakeskin ones look, but it just seems like a waste of money. I’d rather spend that kind of money on shoes that will last more than one season.
These Soludos ones are cute, and I might even go for the black lace ones if I had a promo code 😉

yes, i love their “derby” version! did you sign up for their emails?? i bet they’ll do a coupon code soon…
yes, my thoughts exactly. i LOVE the vince ones, but i feel the same way about seasonal shoes. anyway, in the summer i don’t like to wear “shoes” at all. i need my feet to breathe!! i guess that’s the good thing about canvas, but still. i’d rather wear sandals as much as possible.
I love espadrilles, they just scream summer to me. I have one fun, colorful pair from Gap that unfortunately got slightly wet and now the bottom is all stiff. I can still wear them but they aren’t as flexible as they should be.
And I was crazy last year and got a leather pair from Loeffler Randall. I love her shoes and couldn’t resist the cobalt color that came out. I would get another pair but I’m thinking one pair is probably enough.
Cute picks! I like the R. Minkoff ones 🙂 I tried on a few pairs of espadrille-esq wedges at DSW, but the toe was too pointy 🙁
Monica.
I love espadrilles, they are so great for summer! My feet tend to get sweaty (sorry if I gross anyone out ) when it’s warm, so canvas or real leather are definitely the best materials to wear. I’ve already found two pairs that I’m planning to purchase this season – one pair of gold wedge espadrille sandals and one pair of cream leather classic espadrilles quite similar to the Antrhopologi ones, only at a fraction of the price 🙂
I love them, but I’m not so sure that shoes love me in return. I’m a size 10.5, so it’s difficult….no,nearly impossible….to find shoes that fit correctly. So, with espadrilles, do I get a 10 and hope that they’ll stretch or an 11 and slide around a little?!?
