Emerson Fry slides | true to size (gift from Emerson Fry to review)
Here they are! In case you missed it, I’ve been writing about Emerson Fry’s new FW15 collection since last week and was so excited to receive a few pieces to review for you (I am not getting paid for these posts, nor is there any expectation of favorable reviews – I do earn a commission on sales however). I took these pictures rather quickly yesterday evening…so apologies for the hair and wonky lighting…
First, the triangle sweater, which is even better in person. Truly. It is 100% wool from Imperial Stock Ranch in Oregon and made entirely in the US. I’m wearing a medium, although I think I’d like to exchange it for a small. The sweater is a beautiful weight (heavy) and for me, here in Texas, it’ll probably be warm enough to carry me through most of the winter with a nice layer underneath. The sweater is meant to be oversized, which is tricky for me to pull off because of my short torso + short legs + short arms, but interestingly, I don’t really think this sweater swallows me up like some oversized pieces do. And maybe the medium works just fine. What do you think?
I tried it on with EVERYTHING as soon as I got it (of course), and love it with leggings and my Rag & Bone flat ankle boots, with a long, slim skirt, and with my Eileen Fisher crepe ankle pants. It’s quite cozy, and I love the heavier weight and stitching. Of course the pattern and silhouette are quite striking, making this a beautiful “statement” sweater and a wonderful investment piece.
Emerson Fry Yoshi sweater | size medium (gift from Emerson Fry to review)
Now the Yoshi sweater. THIS SWEATER IS AMAZING. The Yoshi sweater is also 100% wool from Imperial Stock Ranch, and made in the US. It’s a wonderful oversized, circle-shaped sweater with elbow-length sleeves, which gives it a very flattering shape. The medium is the right size for me, especially since I’d like to be able to wear it with leggings (it covers my ass nicely!), and the shorter sleeves makes it perfect for layering over a long sleeve shirt or under a coat for more warmth. It’s more tightly woven and a little less heavy than the triangle sweater, but still a nice mid-weight wool. LOVE!!!
Emerson Fry Yoshi tunic | size medium (gift from Emerson Fry to review)
Finally, the Yoshi tunic in the topographic print, size medium. I know, I know, you guys probably love this the best, but it is not a great shape for me, although it’s hard to tell from the photos. The Yoshi tunic is 100% viscose, made in the US. The topographic print is really beautiful, and very forgiving of bumps and curves if you’re into that. For me, though, the tunic is VERY large on the top and about a 1/2 size too small around my hips/butt; I was constantly trying to pull it down after it got stuck on my hips. And sitting was a bit of a challenge.
If you’re more of a straight shape, or even top-heavy, then I think this tunic would be wonderful for you. As you can see on me, it is dress-length, and would be great alone, or layered over jeans/leggings. It has pockets too, which you know I love in a dress!!
Oh, they also sent me the core bra in a size medium, and guys, seriously, this is such a wonderful bra. I would have ordered a small if I’d ordered one, and I’m afraid it would’ve been a little snug around (I’m typically a 34B). It might have stretched a bit, but on first wear, the medium works well for me, and it IS SO COOL. I love it under white/sheer tops, and even peeking out from behind things that are cut lower in the back or that fall off my shoulder. I HIGHLY recommend this bra if you’re an A-B- maybe C cup. It doesn’t give any support really, but it’s comfortable, and oh so cute…
What are your thoughts on Emerson Fry’s FW15 collection? Will you order anything? Oh, and I received a lookbook/catalog with my order and there are some AMAZING THINGS coming in the second release. Lots more organic cotton…
These items are amazing on you! I think that the scale of the Triangle Sweater looks fantastic in the M. Thanks for sharing with us!
Those sweaters are amazing! Damn my sensitive skin and inability to wear wool!

I’m still on the edge of the Emerson Fry pool, waiting to dip my toes in. The tees speak to me;).

Everything looks amazing! And yeah I gotta say I’m in love with that dress. It’s not in my budget, sadly. Not even close, especially for something that I probably wouldn’t wear very often because it would be so memorable, if you know what I mean. It also looks very spring/summery to me.
I’m sure you’ll get a ton of use out of the sweaters. They look awesome and I can imagine the quality. 🙂
yay core bra! what a great staple. i think you are a small though in many items, and having trouble admitting it 😉
i ordered some stuff from the Ends section. waiting on the layering dress which i was reluctant to purchase at first because i have a very similar eileen fisher one that’s midi length, but realized that the above the knee option would be great with tights and a sweater on top in the winter.
love the sweaters but yikes, are they expensive! i also question whether my coat would even fit over such a thick knit in the winter? seems like they are both sweater and outer layer, which doesn’t cut it in NY.
Oh man, I love these. Would you ever consider doing a closeup shot of the material so we can see and get a better idea of the texture, or do you think your camera might not do it justice?
Agreed on the lack of practicality for NY, which is a relief. That way I’m not so tempted.
yes! will do that with my phone, which i think would get a better closeup –
the triangle sweater would definitely not fit under a coat, unless it was a size too big! it’s more of a cool/sweater-weather sweater, not a mid-winter, freezing outside sweater. the yoshi sweater would work wonderfully under a coat though, it’s less thick and has shorter sleeves. the cut might be an issue?
you’re right about being a small and having trouble admitting it. absolutely.
but interestingly, the medium core bra seems to fit fine. the small might have also, but…
These look fantastic on you, Grechen. I especially love the dress/tunic, and it certainly photographs beautifully…no pulling in sight. I’m so glad to see the Yoshi sweater. That is going on my wishlist, stat.
side note: did you sign up for sydney brown’s newsletter?? 35% off with code SCHOOL35. trying my best not to order. but…
The tunic is really nice .. I love the colors .. still in that neutral range that I love.

I’ve been eying their unisex cross boots in black, those black slides you’ve featured a gazillion times (with good reason!), and that Yoshi sweater.
Has anyone purchased boots from them? I’m eager to know how they rate compared to similarly priced brands…
I’m loving the Triangle sweater! It’s definitely a statement piece…and, for reference, I looked at the fit on the model and I think you’ve got the right size. But I don’t think it would be bad in a Small, either. I’m not much help!
I’m loving the Yoshi sweater. I could see myself wearing that since I can’t handle heavyweight wool, or barely any wool except for merino…a little bit.
I love the dress on you, but I’m not crazy about the print. In black? YES! But if you don’t like the fit, it’s not worth it. Did you do the “Spanky Pants” under it? 😉
Hey Grechen love these pieces on you! Wondering what you think of the EF layering hoodie. I’ve never bought anything from them but that piece looks to suit my mommy on the floor with kids lifestyle 🙂 but I’m somewhat petite and curvy and not sure this isn’t one of these things that only works on tall skinny straight bodies. On another note, do you have any experience with the line “the great”? I’ve been looking for a certain elusive olive green utility style jacket and after much obsessive searching landed on one of theirs but I’ve never bought anything from them….thanks! And if you run across any great olive jackets please post!
I love the pieces especially the Yoshi sweater. Pretty sure I’ll have to invest in it.
I love the triangle sweater but honestly I think it looks too big on you. A small would look perfect I think.
I’m on the fence about the dress. I’m not a fan of the print but I do love the shape of it.
Thanks for the reviews!
Oh man. No, I haven’t signed up yet, thinking the coupon code might expire in a month and that I should wait until I was ready to buy. I love that wedge style, but have a similar Rachel Comey pair, and am trying not to duplicate. I also like the heeled clog, but am not sure if it is too high. You should buy them all 🙂
the yoshi sweater is so good, and versatile…you will love it!
i agree on the triangle sweater, they’re sending me the small to try also…and see if i like that size better.
of course, i LOVE THE HOODIE. BUT. i have no idea how it will fit. it looks rather straight through the knee, which is better than straight and then tapered, but still, that’s a tough look for me to pull off with my hips/butt. my gut feeling is that it would work better on tall/straight body types. but it might be worth a try? it could be an amazing piece – i love the JP thingie i have that’s similar to that, it’s surprisingly versatile in cooler weather….
also love the great, i have the long knot dress, which is good, but have been eyeing their pants and jackets. i know the one you’re referring to, it’s sort of swingy in the back, right? SO GOOD. and unique. i think that would be a great choice for a utility jacket. but good idea for a post though – i’ll do one next week on some more favorites 🙂
ha! even with spanx, it’s still clinging to my hips 🙁
so funny that i LOVE the print, and you guys, not so much!
love those boots julene, but don’t have any experience with their boots. the slides i have are AMAZING though, the leather is nice and supple and the fit is great.
sorry so late! here is a closeup:
Hi Grechen,
I’m going to be totally honest. I’ve been on your mailing list for many years, and the outfits you rock are always the body con, or simple pieces without extra layering to ‘cover’ you up. I’ve looked at some past pictures in which you chose a slim sweater dress – think it was James Perse, the Splendid fitted ankle pants in Military with a shorter, lightweight top, and trying on a Madewell shirt dress, I think. Couldn’t believe you were the same person, and how little you are under those layers!
You seem to have a small torso and fuller legs, but more often than not, it’s hidden. When you layer garments, (most pics I see in front of the garage are straight hem long tops over skinny jeans) or wearing something like these top heavy sweaters pictured today just to cover the back side, it simply makes everything appear round, and bulky. Those pieces are oversized even if you sized down. Please avoid the layering hoodie, that’s for a 6’5″ male basketball player!
You are thin, and I would suggest a straight leg or gentle flare jean to give you a long lean look, paired with a lightweight silk or cotton top w/a hi-lo hem or hem that stops above the hips. Avoid the gratuitously oversized brands of Vince, E. Fisher, A. Vittidini, and the like. Not that they don’t have a few pieces that would work. However, there are so many quality, made in the USA brands that know how to cut flattering pieces and could use your business expertise. It would fit your lifestyle, as well as the needs of your audience.
I’m 49 today. Also have a short torso, except I’m full busted, pretty avg legs, plenty of glutes, 5’2″. After everyone I know gave me a hard time about hiding behind layers, yes I’m a recovering layeraholic, I’ve found so many great brands that offer carefully cut, tissue thin, natural fabrics such as cotton, modal, silk, and the ‘new’ linen, as well as rayon blends to drape over my areas of concern without burying me. Asymmetric hems are fabulous, just a sheer partial cover in the back adds confidence. I also tried every style of clothing imaginable, and was shocked at what I thought looked good didn’t, and found items I knew looked great once I tried them, but wouldn’t have considered prior to my new mind set. I started my career in banking, back when we had to wear conservative dresses or skirt suits, hose, and heels to work, which is why I also chose high end dept. store brand names regardless of fit, especially before Internet shopping existed. It was my comfort zone.
I had to quit working due to a medical condition, and sadly started menopause at 40, all while moving my 95 yo grandmother into our home a few months after losing the foster daughter we’d thought would be staying with us forever. The whole package brought me low. I gained weight for the first time at 35 after my only mc after 17 yrs of marriage, and went from a sz 7 to a sz 10. It took a while but, I maintain a sz 12 now. Good enough for me at this point in my life.
Anyway, you only go around once, as they say, and I just wanted to tell you that you should be proud to show off the body you’ve worked hard for, and I’d love to see minimalist fashion in front of the garage, with the great shoes you own!
Take care, and thanks for being online for us all these years. I’ve always looked forward to your emails. You’ve steered me toward many a sale.
The jacket i got from the great is actually a longer one called the ‘fishtail parka.’ I had wanted something longer because for some reason I’m into layering longer tops over jeans these days….haven’t gotten yet but will report when i do! And yes, a post on these sorts of jackets and/or the great would be….um…great!
I want to like Emerson Fry – really truly I do so I can legitimately hang with the cool fashion kids, but there’s always been something just wrong enough to be all wrong for me with this brand The clothes look unique & hip…on the wafer-thin models….but I see Instagram pix of regular women wearing EF clothing & more often than not…meh. Not a little meh…but a lot of meh.
Something is getting lost in translation & I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t get it.

So good!!!!
Popping in again to have another look and to read comments. Just wanted to add that obviously you look great in your form fitting choices, but that I also love these oversized looks. I was recently in Steven Alan trying on a couple brands that you have mentioned on your blog. I put on the Hope trousers, which are saggy and slightly loose. When I came out of the change room, I asked if there was something slim I could pair them with, trying to abide by the loose on top, baggy on bottom (and vice versa) ethic. They all said NO, and brought me extra slouchy and long stuff to try on with them. It was really fun to have my silhouette “updated” by the cool hipsters in the store. It also made me realize that I my constant questions about whether I am hiding my body, displaying it properly, revealing lumps and bumps, are another way that I foster being tied to my body image. There was something artful and freeing about their choices for me that made me think of you. I love that you mix it up and let the clothes be their own thing. It’s good for all of us!
Thank you!!! Going to try this one 🙂
Beautiful, Christina! A great reminder to wear what makes us HAPPY!
Just wanted to chime in that I just received the EF Yoshi sweater in Ivory (from their “imperfect” sale last week) and it is everything you said it was! So easy to layer under my coat, long enough in the back to cover my pencil skirt, and a really lovely hefty but wearable knit. I often have trouble with wool being itchy with fairly sensitive skin, but am wearing this on my bare skin today and it feels great.
Just a note – I’ve nabbed EF “imperfects” before and haven’t been able to identify the imperfection. In this case I think I spotted them – one or two areas in the knit where there is a yarn that has a tiny knot like-look to it. Sort of creates a tiny bubble or bump in the knit. Very, very hard to notice (in fact, now I can’t find them :P)
Shoot – forgot to add to help others with the Yoshi fit – I bought it in a size Small and it’s **perfect**. I’m 5 foot 7 inches, and wear about a size 4-6 at the moment. Covers my butt and is oversized and drapey but without being too overwhelming
thanks for your review jess!! i wear my yoshi sweater a lot, it’s so cozy 😉
i bought the caftan during an “imperfect” sale, and i have no idea what’s so imperfect about it! i never was able to figure it out. fine by me!!
