So. I’m in the throes of packing for Florida (we’re leaving early on Friday), and I thought I had a strategy down for this trip: only bring dresses, and a few tops/sweaters for layering. Good idea, no? When we’re in Florida, that’s all I’ll wear, but I had planned on wearing jeans or leggings on the plane because of course I always FREEZE on the plane, and generally I like my legs to be covered. Although aside from the coldness issue, I’m not sure why I want my legs covered.
As I am wont to do, I planned everything out yesterday, but am having second thoughts today. Of course. I planned to wear my long Splendid dress with my Everlane seed stitch sweater on top and Birkenstocks on the plane, but now I’m thinking I’ll wear leggings and a tank/cardigan. I hesitated on wearing sandals on the plane too – I know my feet will freeze, but they’re actually the bulkiest shoes I’m bringing with me, so they’ll have to do. I was going to wear my Nikes, but they squish up better in my suitcase. And I’ll bring my coziest, thickest socks to change into on the plane so my toes are warm.
The problem with the leggings is that I’ll probably not wear them again once we’re in Florida, not until the flight home. But…they might be nice to have. Of course, what we’ll be doing most of the time is just hanging around home, enjoying the lake, and relaxing (I hope), so I don’t need a lot anyway, just comfortable, easy things to lounge around in. And a few things for wearing “out.”
Sigh. Why do I make packing for travel so difficult?? You know what I thought about doing? Determining the number and types of things I need to bring, closing my eyes and just reaching into my closet, choosing items blindly and just bringing those. Of course, I have everything separated into type, so I’d choose a certain number of items from each type of thing, so I don’t end up with all tops and no dresses/skirts…but my closet is such that everything really goes together, so I think that would work. But I’m not going to try it this time.
There will be more on this later, but in the mean time, there is some beautiful Eileen Fisher marked down at Nordstrom for their half-yearly sale today:

James Perse too, but I’ll have a whole post on that later π
I know we’ve talked about packing only one color for traveling, but have you ever brought only one STYLE (dresses or separates) with you for travel? Would you?
Oddly, I’ve never struggled with packing. And several people I respect enormously, like you, do. I wonder if it’s because I wear only pants for day, and a dress at night, so permutations are limited? Or perhaps just lack of imagination on my part? Hmm.
There’s something that happens in the 11th hour of my packing. When I start, I usually have the pieces picked in my head, including night clothes, underwear, socks, and shoes. Then when I go to start putting things in my suitcase, this sort of crazed panic sets in. I start freaking out about the unexpected: What if we decide to go to a country and western bar? What if a tropical depression hits? What if it becomes unseasonably warm/cold? What if we go to a restaurant with a dress code? Or (my personal favorite) what if I just don’t FEEL like wearing anything I bring? All of these what if’s start adding up, and suddenly I’m trying to fit my entire wardrobe in a suitcase. I’ve done everything I can to stave off the crazy, but it always pops up. That’s why I’m the girl that somehow manages to have the heaviest back at airport check in, and always has too much stuff for the weekend away. Sad but true π
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS TO ME!!!!!
i have really really tried to avoid packing too much lately, and i think i’ve been successful, but leading up to it, i go into panic mode. and i NEVER check a bag, so i have to get everything into my teeny tiny suitcase. i see it as a challenge though, and somehow i always manage to have what i need, and often more than what i need. but you can’t convince me of that while i’m trying to pack!
and LOL at the country & western bar π
i envy you lisa! i wish i didn’t struggle so much with packing, but it’s par for the course, as i over think EVERYTHING. so why wouldn’t i over think packing??
You’re officially a member of the “Overthinkers Club”! I’m a charter member, but it’s not usually clothes for me, but rather more earth-shattering decisions like what to order at a restaurant. ( And then I always want what everyone else is having!)
I never thought about Lisa’s point before, but I do the same thing. Other than a maxi in the summer occasionally. I couldn’t do all one type because I like options in case I change my mind (see above). All one color was hard enough…and I cheated. ????
I think Cathy needs to join OA, too. (Overthinkers Anonymous) I TOTALLY get it!
Yes!! We need a support group for sure!!
Ok, so you’ve probably already seen this, but THE Olsen Twins have your solution: http://www.refinery29.com/socks-with-sandals?utm_source=email&utm_medium=commerce&utm_content=shops&utm_campaign=140522-socks-with-sandals#slide
And they’re even at the airport!!????
oh NO. i don’t think so.
i will put my socks on on the airplane, not before π and take them off again before anyone sees.
LMAO!!!????
