I’ve been thinking about this Gap denim dress since their last coupon code (which has expired) and got a chance to try it on today. I REALLY loved it on me, but couldn’t bring myself to pay full-price, so I left it in the store. I’m definitely going to get it with their next coupon code, but what I really want to do with it, is cut the top off, and make it into a skirt.
Somehow, that sounds a little easier said than done, and I don’t even have a sewing machine, so I couldn’t do it myself, but I’m thinking a tailor could do it. I LOVE denim skirts, but have never been able to find the perfect a-line version. I do love this dress as a dress, but I think it would be more versatile in my closet as a skirt.
Has anyone ever done something like that? made a dress into a skirt?
I’ve never done it, no! But I am sure a tailor could do it?
I’m surprised you want to cut if off, though! I think its so cute as it is, especially with a big belt or possibly a woven belt…
I’ve had a lot of things altered, but never a dress to a skirt. Somehow, it seems better in theory. I think it’s better to hold out for the perfect a-line. To paraphrase “Field of Dreams”: If you wish for it, it will come…
(plus, the dress is adorable–I could totally see you in the dress!)
it is really cute. i just want an a-line denim skirt…
I would hold out for the right skirt. Converting the dress might ruin the line as you attempt to create a waistband that fits appropriately. You could always trace the line of the dress and have a skirt made separately. Good luck!
grechen – i took a basic fashion sewing class last fall and making an A-line skirt yourself from a simple pattern is much, much easier than you think! built-by-wendy has some great patterns and how-to books, as does diana rupp, the lovely crafty lady who taught my sewing workshop. you can pick out your own denim material and customize every detail to fit you perfectly!
.-= miss sophie´s last blog ..utilitarian spring =-.
you’re right sophie – i’ve looked at the BBW book, and would love to get it and try making some of her patterns, but i don’t have a sewing machine!! maybe when i go home to atlanta, i’ll get my mom to help 😉 i’d love to be able to make some of my own clothes…
If you’re looking for an a-line, Façonnable has a Chambray Skirt that looks really cute. I haven’t tried it on. It is a bit pricey, but it looks super versatile.
thanks julie – i just looked at the skirt, this one, right: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3065201?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=predictivesearch&keyword=faconnable+women%27s+apparel&origin=searchresults – i love it actually, but was kind of wanting something with buttons down the front. maybe similar to this A.P.C. one, but longer: http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/63533 – but this is THE SKIRT i want: http://jezebel.com/5458476/everything-but-the-shoes-darling – i think it’s chloe? i already have the shoes 😉
grechen, i know just the skirt for you. unfortunately it is not in the current season. it is a madewell brand button-front, light denim, a-line skirt. i can’t find it online. it is longer than the apc skirt, and shorter than the chloé skirt. it is exactly what you are looking for. i wish i could find it for you.
i wish you could find it for me too!!! it sounds perfect.
thanks for the suggestion though, maybe i’ll do some searching…
